Autonomic nervous system correlates of past and prospective suicidal thoughts and behaviors in Mexican-origin youth.

Few studies have examined prospective or neurobiological predictors of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) in Latino youth. We hypothesized that autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity at baseline and in response to social exclusion would distinguish Mexican-origin adolescents with versus without histories of suicidality, and would predict subsequent suicidality. Skin conductance responses and respiratory sinus arrhythmia, indicators of sympathetic and parasympathetic activity, respectively, were recorded at baseline and during Cyberball exclusion trials, in 229 Mexican-origin youths (M = 17…

Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction in Diabetic Patients After Myocardial Infarction: Prognostic Role of the Valsalva Maneuver.

Background and Objectives: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including acute myocardial infarction (MI), and is frequently associated with cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN). Post-MI autonomic dysfunction contributes to adverse outcomes, but data on prognostic markers in diabetic patients remain limited. This study aimed to (1) compare autonomic nervous system (ANS) function between patients with MI and DM (MI/DM), MI without DM, and DM without MI; (2) assess differences in MI/DM patients based on survival status; and (3) identify prognostic facto…

Reactivity of the Autonomic Nervous System During Visual-Physical Incongruent Walking Conditions-A Virtual Reality Study.

The force of gravity critically impacts locomotion regulation while walking on inclined surfaces. To construct an updated assessment about the gravitational consequences and change gait patterns accordingly, the central nervous system (CNS) integrates multiple sensorial cues, including vestibular and proprioceptive (i.e., body-based cues) and visual. Not much is known about the contribution of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) to locomotion regulation, especially when multiple types of sensorial cues are involved. Here we examine the responsiveness of the ANS, as reflected by cardiac reactivi…

Obesity- and High-Fat-Diet-Induced Neuroinflammation: Implications for Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction and Endothelial Disorders.

Obesity is a multifactorial condition linked to severe health complications, including cardiovascular diseases and endothelial dysfunction. Both obesity and high-fat diets (HFDs) are strongly associated with neuroinflammation, particularly in the hypothalamus. The autonomic nervous system (ANS), which controls involuntary physiological processes, is critical for maintaining cardiovascular health, and its dysfunction is implicated in endothelial disorders. With its homeostatic control centers located in the hypothalamus and brainstem, a crucial question arises: could obesity- and HFD-induced ne…

Relationship between exercise tolerance and autonomic nervous system modulation after catheter ablation for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

Autonomic nervous system (ANS) modulation increases the heart rate (HR) after catheter ablation (CA) for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). However, its influence on exercise tolerance (ET) is poorly understood. This single-center retrospective cohort study enrolled patients who underwent CA for PAF. To analyze the effects of ANS modulation on ET, cardiopulmonary stress testing was performed before and 3 and 12 months after CA. The final analysis included 25 patients in the cryoballoon ablation (CBA) group and 24 in the radiofrequency CA (RFCA) group. HR increased at 3 and 12 months after C…

[Fetal monitoring: Current limitations and new approaches based on analysis of the fetal autonomic nervous system].

OBJECTIVE: Currently, fetal monitoring during labor is based on visual analysis of the fetal heart rate (FHR). This test is imperfect, with … re physiological approach to FHR assessment. The main actor in maintaining fetal homeostasis is the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Its activity can be assessed by analysing heart rate variability (HRV). The aim is to assess whether HRV can be used to identify situations at risk of acidosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our team has developed an index, the Fetal Stress Index, …

Effects of pulsed field ablation on autonomic nervous system in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Vagal responses and phrenic activation are commonly observed during pulsed field ablation (PFA). However, whether the vagal responses and phrenic activations are nerve damage or a neurological stress response due to electrical stimulation is unclear. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a PFA system for performing pulmonary vein isolation on the autonomic nervous system. METHODS: Patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) who underwent PFA between August 2021 and November 2021 were included. Nerve injury biomarkers and heart rate variability w…

Intrinsic cardiac autonomic nervous system: What do clinical electrophysiologists need to know about the "heart brain"?

It is increasingly recognized that the autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a major contributor in many cardiac arrhythmias. Cardiac ANS can be divided into extrinsic and intrinsic parts according to the course of nerve fibers and localization of ganglia and neuron bodies. Although the role of the extrinsic part has historically gained more attention, the intrinsic cardiac ANS may affect cardiac function independently as well as influence the effects of the extrinsic nerves. Catheter-based modulation of the intrinsic cardiac ANS is emerging as a novel therapy for the management of patients with b…

Geometry of the Poincaré plot can segregate the two arms of autonomic nervous system - A hypothesis.

Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) operates to achieve the optimum physiological functioning and maintains homeostasis in a tonic and continuous manner. Evaluation of ANS profile is crucial in assessing autonomic dysfunction. Conventional ANS evaluation procedures fail to capture minute dynamic alterations of ANS activities. The ANS output pattern is appropriately reflected in the fine alteration of the resting heart rate (HR). HR is a non-stationary variable, results from the dynamic interplay between the multiple physiologic mechanisms. The control of cardiac rate or the chronotropic regulation …

Autonomic Modulation by Electrical Stimulation of the Parasympathetic Nervous System: An Emerging Intervention for Cardiovascular Diseases.

The cardiac autonomic nervous system has been known to play an important role in the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases. Autonomic modulation by electrical stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system, which increases the parasympathetic activity and suppresses the sympathetic activity, is emerging as a therapeutic strategy for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Here, we review the recent literature on autonomic modulation by electrical stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system, including vagus nerve stimulation, transcutaneous auricular vagal stimulatio…

Potential Interactions between the Autonomic Nervous System and Higher Level Functions in Neurological and Neuropsychiatric Conditions.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) maintains the internal homeostasis by continuously interacting with other brain structures. Its failure is commonly observed in many neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, including neurodegenerative and vascular brain diseases, spinal cord injury, and peripheral neuropathies. Despite the different underlying pathophysiological mechanisms, ANS failure associates with various forms of higher level dysfunctions, and may also negatively impact on patients' clinical outcome. In this review, we will discuss potential relationships between ANS and higher leve…

Disturbances of autonomic nervous system activity and diminished response to stress in patients with celiac disease.

Celiac disease (CED) is immune-mediated enteropathy caused by gluten intolerance affecting genetically predisposed individuals. CED may exert a number of various symptoms, including extra intestinal manifestations. Neurological symptoms can be the first sign of gluten intolerance. However, affected autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity may be linked to other symptoms. We evaluated the frequency of ANS impairment and resting ANS response to several stimuli in CED patients without neurological manifestations. Twenty five neurologically asymptomatic patients with CED were studied. The medical h…
