Neural correlates of impaired vision in adolescents born extremely preterm and/or extremely low birthweight.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents born extremely preterm (EP; <28 weeks' gestation) and/or extremely low birthweight (ELBW; <1000 g) experience high rates of visual impairments, however the potential neural correlates of visual impairments in EP/ELBW adolescents require further investigation. This study aimed to: 1) compare optic radiation and primary visual cortical structure between EP/ELBW adolescents and normal birthweight controls; 2) investigate associations between perinatal factors and optic radiation and primary visual cortical structure in EP/ELBW adolescents; 3) investigate associations betwe

Radiation-induced lung toxicity predictors: Retrospective analysis of 90 patients treated with stereotactic body radiation therapy for stage I non-small-cell lung carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: The main complication after hypofractionated radiotherapy for lung carcinoma is radiation-induced lung toxicity, which can be divided into radiation pneumonitis (acute toxicity, occurring within 6 months) and lung fibrosis (late toxicity, occurring after 6 months). The literature describes several predictive factors related to the patient, to the tumor (volume, central location), to the dosimetry and to biological factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is a retrospective analysis of 90 patients treated with stereotactic body irradiation for stage I non-small-cell lung carcinom

An approach to design a wristwatch for the protection of the human skin damage induced by ultraviolet and infrared radiations.

BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet radiations (UV) absorbed by the skin can drive photochemical reactions which range from sunburn to skin cancer. The repeated exposure to Infrared radiations (IR) induces the heat into the skin, which causes dehydration and erythema as an immediate effect. This heat activates the metalloproteinase enzyme that reduces the number of procollagen and collagen fibers in the dermal skin, which results premature skin aging. This work aims to design a protective measure in order to avoid these damages. METHOD: The proposed protective measure is a wristwatch with an alert alarm

Perceptions on radioprotective garment usage and underlying reasons for non-adherence among medical radiation workers from public hospitals in a middle-income Asian setting: A qualitative exploration.

BACKGROUND: Radioprotective garments protect medical radiation workers from exposure to radiation at workplace. However, previous studies have found poor adherence to the use of radioprotective garments. OBJECTIVES: We explored the perceptions and practices related to the use of radioprotective garments among medical radiation workers in public hospitals, and sought to understand the reasons for non-adherence. DESIGN AND SETTING: A qualitative approach was applied by conducting face-to-face in-depth interviews with 18 medical radiation workers from three university hospitals using a semi-str

Adaptive Response Induced by Pre-Exposure to 915 MHz Radiofrequency: A Possible Role for Antioxidant Enzyme Activity.

BACKGROUND: Over the past few years, the rapid use of high frequency electromagnetic fields like mobile phones has raised global concerns about the negative health effects of its use. Adaptive response is the ability of a cell or tissue to better resist stress damage by prior exposure to a lesser amount of stress. This study aimed to assess whether radiofrequency radiation can induce adaptive response by changing the antioxidant balance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In order to assess RF-induced adaptive response in tissues, we evaluated the level of GSH and the activity of GR in liver. 50 rats wer

Operator radiation exposure during transradial coronary angiography : Effect of single vs. double catheters.

BACKGROUND: The right radial artery has gained popularity as the preferred access site for coronary angiography. To save time and limit the radiation exposure of operators and patients, newly designed catheters can be used to access both the right and left coronary arteries. The aim of this study was to compare operator radiation exposure between single-catheter (SCA) and two-catheter approaches (TCA). METHODS: In all, 256 patients undergoing diagnostic coronary angiography via the right radial artery in a high-volume medical center were randomized to either the SCA or TCA group. The dose of

Radiation therapy impairs endothelium-dependent vasodilation in humans.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that external-beam radiation induces a chronic impairment of endothelium-dependent vasodilation. BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy is used commonly in the treatment of cancer and is associated with an increased incidence of adverse vascular events related to the field of radiation, including stroke and myocardial infarction. As endothelial injury is central to the pathogenesis of vascular diseases, we hypothesized that radiotherapy induces arterial endothelial dysfunction. METHODS: Sixteen women with unilateral breast cancer who

Thyroid lymphoma. The case for combined modality therapy.

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy with or without surgery is generally considered standard treatment for lymphoma of the thyroid. Because of the small number of cases, the role of chemotherapy or combined modality treatment is difficult to determine. METHODS: The published literature was analyzed, supplemented by a series from Yale, for the incidence of local and distant relapse after radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or combined modality treatment for Stage I-II thyroid lymphoma. Patients with advanced disease or in whom radiation was probably inadequate were excluded. Only patients receiving an

Radiation therapy for persistent or progressive mediastinal lymphoma after chemotherapy in FeLV-positive cats: a retrospective case series of four cats.

BACKGROUND: Mediastinal lymphoma in feline leukaemia virus (FeLV)-positive cats is associated with a poor prognosis, and therapeutic options may be limited when adequate disease control is not achieved with chemotherapy. The efficacy of radiation therapy in this setting has not been established. CASE REPORT: Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for FeLV-positive cats diagnosed with mediastinal lymphoma between November 2018 and December 2024 that had persistent or progressive mediastinal disease after chemotherapy and were subsequently treated with radiation therapy. Treatment respon

Patient radiation dose during percutaneous interventional closure of interatrial communications.

OBJECTIVE: To determine fluoroscopy time (FT) and radiation dose (RD) applied in percutaneous closure of interatrial septal communications (IAC). BACKGROUND: Percutaneous closure of IAC, namely patent foramen ovale (PFO) and atrial septal defect (ASD) is increasingly performed. In this often young population in full reproductive age, radiation dosage should be an important issue, yet consistent data on applied radiation dose have not been available to date. METHODS: A single center observational cohort study in 50 consecutive patients undergoing closure of a PFO or ASD. RD and FT as recorded

Freehand Three-Dimensional Ultrasound Image-Guided Needle Targeting for Percutaneous Abdominal Puncture.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous abdominal interventions require precise and real-time guidance for safe needle placement. Conventional CT or fluoroscopy provides accurate localisation but involves radiation, while ultrasound (US) offers a radiation-free alternative but suffers from limited 3D visualisation. METHODS: We developed a guidance system integrating a needle-guide mechanism with a tracked US probe to achieve real-time radiation-free targeting. The approach reconstructs freehand 3D US volumes at 25 frames per second, enabling path planning and augmenting the needle trajectory onto live B-sca
