Aconitum coreanum (H.Lév l.) Rapaics exerts neuroprotective effects on cerebral ischemic stroke by inhibiting autophagy through the AMPK/mTOR/ULK1 pathway.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebral ischemic stroke (CIS) induces neuronal damage and activates neuronal autophagy through diverse mechanisms. Autophagy exerts adverse effects in acute neurological disorders, leading to neuronal apoptosis and death. The dried tuberous root of Aconitum coreanum (H.Lév l.) Rapaics is a traditional herbal medicine that has been used to treat stroke. This study explores the neuroprotective effects of A. coreanum through its role in autophagy and the mechanisms that underly this activity. METHODS: The middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion technique was used to establish a

Utilization Patterns and Clinical Indications of General Anesthesia in Pediatric Dentistry: A Systematic Review.

Background: General anesthesia (GA) plays a key role in pediatric dentistry by enabling comprehensive dental treatment in children who cannot be adequately managed using conventional behavioral techniques, local anesthesia, or sedation. While previous reviews have primarily focused on safety outcomes and adverse events, less attention has been given to patterns of GA utilization and their broader clinical and public health implications. Objective: The objective was to synthesize and critically analyze contemporary evidence on utilization patterns, clinical indications, and treatment characteri

Selenide [Se(-II)] Immobilization in Anoxic, Fe(II)-Rich Environments: Coprecipitation and Behavior during Phase Transformations.

The radionuclide selenium-79 (Se-79) is predicted to be a key contributor to the long-term radiologic hazards associated with geological high-level waste (HLW) repositories; hence its release is of pertinent concern in the safety assessment of repositories. However, interactions of reduced Se species with aqueous Fe(II) species and solid phases arising from the corrosion of a steel overpack could play a role in mitigating its migration to the surrounding environment. In this study, we examined the immobilization mechanisms of Se(-II) during its interaction with aqueous Fe(II) and freshly preci

Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis for repairing diastemal mandibular fractures in dromedary camels.

Mandibular diastemal fractures represent a significant clinical problem in dromedary camels and are frequently encountered during rut season due to aggressive behavior and biting. Although bone plating provides stable fixation, it is often associated with considerable soft tissue trauma. Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) has emerged as a biological fixation method that intends to preserve fracture biology while reducing surgical invasiveness. The present study aimed to develop a MIPO technique for repairing diastemal mandibular fractures and to evaluate its clinical outcomes in dr

Training communication skills in a multiuser medical virtual reality simulation: a qualitative, observational study.

BACKGROUND: Simulation-based education is a well-established training technique in medical curricula, also for communication skills. Virtual reality (VR) technology can enhance this form of experience-based learning. How VR interacts with training communication skills for interpersonal and interprofessional medical encounters is, however, unclear. This study investigates how VR influences communication skills and behaviors in patient-student and team encounters in medical undergraduate simulations, in order to make recommendations for VR simulation-based communication skills training (CST). Deep phenotypic analysis of psychiatric features in genetically defined cohorts: application to XYY syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent gene dosage disorders impart substantial risk for psychopathology. Yet, understanding that risk is hampered by complex presentations that challenge classical diagnostic systems. Here, we present a suite of generalizable analytic approaches for parsing this clinical complexity, which we illustrate through application to XYY syndrome. METHOD: We gathered high-dimensional measures of psychopathology in 64 XYY individuals and 60 XY controls, plus additional interviewer-based diagnostic data in the XYY group. We provide the first comprehensive diagnostic description of psychi

Dexmedetomidine for the treatment of postanesthesia shivering in children.

BACKGROUND: Shivering is a common postanesthesia adverse event with multiple etiologies and multiple suggested prophylactic and abortive treatment regimens. Dexmedetomidine, a centrally acting alpha(2)-adrenergic agonist, has been used as a sedative agent and is known to reduce the shivering threshold. We hypothesized that children with postanesthesia shivering would reduce shivering behavior following a single bolus dose of dexmedetomidine. METHODS: Dexmedetomidine was administered in a prospective, open-label fashion. The anesthesia management was uniform consisting of maintenance inhaled a

Association of tooth wear with dentin hypersensitivity: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: The association between tooth wear (TW) and dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is not well understood. This systematic review investigated the role of TW (and etiological factors) as an associated factor for DH. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Literature search was conducted in five databases with terms related to DH and TW, until April 2025. Three pairs of independent reviewers selected clinical studies reporting on DH and TW (and related etiology) in dentate adults, and performed data extraction. Study quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist. A struc

Neuroanatomical Predictors of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS)-Induced Modifications in Neurocognitive Task Performance in Typically Developing Individuals.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive neuromodulation technique gaining more attention in neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). Due to the phenotypic heterogeneity of NDDs, tDCS is unlikely to be equally effective in all individuals. The present study aimed to establish neuroanatomical markers in typically developing (TD) individuals that may be used for the prediction of individual responses to tDCS. Fifty-seven male and female children received 2 mA anodal and sham tDCS, targeting the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFCleft), right inferior frontal gyrus, and

Description of Novel Molecular Factors in Lumbar DRGs and Spinal Cord Factors Underlying Development of Neuropathic Pain Component in the Animal Model of Osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common joint disorder, with pain accompanied by functional impairment, as the most pronounced clinical symptom. Currently used pharmacotherapy involves symptomatic treatment that do not always provide adequate pain relief. This may be due to concomitance of central sensitization and development of neuropathic features in OA patients. Here we performed studies in the animal model of OA to investigate of the neuropathic component. Intraarticular injection of monoiodoacetate (MIA, 1 mg) was used to induce OA in Wistar male rats. Development of pain phenotype

Effects of attention training technique on brain function in high- and low-cognitive-attentional syndrome individuals: Regional dynamics before, during, and after a single session of ATT.

OBJECTIVE: Attention Training Technique (ATT) is a key therapeutic tool in metacognitive therapy. There are numerous studies on the behavioral effects of ATT, however the neural mechanisms at work in the training are yet to be uncovered. To date there have been no controlled fMRI studies of ATT. METHOD: We conducted a randomized double-blind controlled study of two groups with varying levels of cognitive-attentional syndrome (CAS). Groups with high (n = 43) and low (n = 46) levels of CAS underwent a single session of ATT or a control condition (CON) in an MRI scanner. Participants underwent r

Visual adaptation provides objective electrophysiological evidence of facial identity discrimination.

Discrimination of facial identities is a fundamental function of the human brain that is challenging to examine with macroscopic measurements of neural activity, such as those obtained with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG). Although visual adaptation or repetition suppression (RS) stimulation paradigms have been successfully implemented to this end with such recording techniques, objective evidence of an identity-specific discrimination response due to adaptation at the level of the visual representation is lacking. Here, we addressed this issue wit

[A longitudinal (3 years) study of the development of four children with autism without mental retardation after 90 sessions of social skills training].

INTRODUCTION: Few studies on social skills training essentially based on ABA techniques are dedicated to children with autism aged 5 to 10 years whereas autistic disorders can be diagnosed in very early childhood. Generally, the main criticisms about these social skills training are: shortness of programs (around 20 sessions), no manual with precise descriptions of sessions and used techniques, and a lack of generalization of the learned skills in everyday life. OBJECTIVES: To describe the evolution (before/after) of symptoms and sociocommunicative skills of 7 children with autism and no ment

Development of solid dispersions based on 3- (2,6-difluorobenzyl) -5- (5-bromo-1H-indol-3-ylmethylene) thiazolidine-2,4-dione for schistosomicidal treatment.

Schistosomiasis is an endemic disease in Brazil. It is important to broaden the treatment options to control and containment of the disease. Thiazolidine derivatives appear as important alternatives to treatment. In vitro studies have demonstrated excellent schistosomiasis activity for LPSF/GQ-238. The molecule, however, has poorly water-soluble. This study focused on increasing the aqueous solubility of LPSF/GQ-238 by obtaining solid dispersions. Were prepared by the solvent techniques, using Soluplus®, Polyethylene glycol (PEG), and Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP-K30) as carriers. Solubility test

Evaluating the utility of a CO2 surgical laser for piglet castration to reduce pain and improve wound healing: a pilot study.

CO2 surgical lasers are widely used for procedures in veterinary and human medicine. There is evidence to suggest surgery using a CO2 laser reduces pain and swelling and improves healing time compared with surgery with a scalpel. Millions of piglets in North America are surgically castrated each year using a scalpel. Therefore, piglet welfare may be improved by making refinements to the surgical procedure. The objectives of this preliminary study were to determine the ability of a CO2 surgical laser to (1) reduce pain and (2) improve wound healing of piglets undergoing surgical castration. Two

Shedding light on excessive crying in babies.

BACKGROUND: Excessive and inconsolable crying behavior in otherwise healthy infants (a condition called infant colic (IC)) is very distressing to parents, may lead to maternal depression, and in extreme cases, may result in shaken baby syndrome. Despite the high prevalence of this condition (20% of healthy infants), the underlying neural mechanisms of IC are still unknown. METHODS: By employing the latest magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques in newborns, we prospectively investigated whether newborns' early brain responses to a sensory stimulus (smell) is associated with a subsequent c

Charting epilepsy by searching for intelligence in network space with the help of evolving autonomous agents.

The problem of demarcating neural network space is formidable. A simple fully connected recurrent network of five units (binary activations, synaptic weight resolution of 10) has 3.2 *10(26) possible initial states. The problem increases drastically with scaling. Here we consider three complementary approaches to help direct the exploration to distinguish epileptic from healthy networks. [1] First, we perform a gross mapping of the space of five-unit continuous recurrent networks using randomized weights and initial activations. The majority of weight patterns (>70%) were found to result in ne
