KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: In the anatomically complex terrain of the head and neck, the use of 3D intraoperative models serves as an effective verification tool, determining the size, shape, and number of foreign bodies. This allows the main operator to maximize their capacities for careful wound revision and receive real-time information about the remaining content of the sought-after bodies.
ABSTRACT: Penetrating foreign bodies of various origins in the head and neck are uncommon, but potentially hazardous injuries. Complete removal of foreign bodies from soft tissues is essential for optimal h

BACKGROUND: Body weight variability (BWV) refers to intraindividual weight loss and gain over a period. The association of long-term BWV with dementia remains unclear and whether this association is beyond body weight change is undetermined.
METHODS: In the Health and Retirement Study, a total of 5 547 dementia-free participants (56.7% women; mean [SD] age, 71.1 [3.2] years) at baseline (2008) were followed up to 8 years (mean = 6.8 years) to detect incident dementia. Body weight was self-reported biennially from 1992 to 2008. BWV was measured as the coefficient of variation utilizing the bod

It is known that osteoporosis decreases physical function in older males. However, the role of metabolic parameters and physical activity influencing older men's bone status remains unclear. Thus, this study was designed to evaluate calcaneus bone mass by ultrasonic screening and the associated physical and metabolic functions in older men. This was a cross-sectional study. Three hundred sixty-eight older men (average age, 78.8 years) living in a veterans' home were enrolled. We measured body height and weight, waist and hip circumference, body fat, lean body mass, blood pressure, 6-min walkin

Several studies have confirmed a decrease in the quality and quantity of milk of mothers with diabetes during lactation. However, it remains unclear how maternal diabetes affects the offspring specifically during lactation. The aim of this study was to evaluate body and mandibular growth and tooth eruption in pups suckling from diabetic dams. The study was performed on 13 Wistar rat pups that were born to dams that were subjected to experimental diabetes on the day of parturition. Body weight and body size were recorded regularly throughout the study. The experimental pups and a group of eight

In this presentation we examine the practice of high ear-piercing in children, the issue of informed consent and current legislation. We sampled current practice and consent policy by visiting nine establishments in Sheffield providing this service. There were two high street department stores, two fashion accessory outlets and five body-piercing studios. Enquiries were made as to the technique used, knowledge of complications, customer counselling and consent policy. A photograph of an ear with a cosmetic deformity following high ear-piercing was shown and awareness of this possible outcome w

Bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content and body composition were determined in 47 middle-aged (mean age 47.9 +/- 1.1 years) women with Turner's syndrome. Bone mineral density was measured in the forearm, femoral neck and total body. The women investigated had a BMD lower than the normal mean. When expressed as Z scores (individual values compared to normal reference data matched for age, weight and sex), the median Z score of the total body was -1.23. When comparing women with the karyotype 45,X and mosaic women, the latter showed a higher BMD in all sites of measurement. Duration of

INTRODUCTION: Children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) exhibit progressive body composition alterations. While dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the reference standard, its routine use is limited by cost, radiation, and availability. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) offers a portable, radiation-free alternative, but its accuracy relative to DXA in paediatric CKD remains insufficiently evaluated.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled 102 children aged 5-14 years with CKD stages 3-5. Same-day BIA and DXA measurements were performed. Agreement between methods was assessed

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LAP-C) is the definitive treatment for symptomatic cholelithiasis, yet bile duct injury (BDI), primarily caused by anatomical misidentification, remains a formidable risk. The Critical View of Safety (CVS) achievement will prevent BDI, but its consistent attainment is technically demanding in inflamed or distorted anatomy. The body-first dissection technique has been proposed as an alternative approach to improve CVS achievement, though high-quality prospective evidence remains limited. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) was designed to systematica

Some large, wide-ranging teleosts and elasmobranchs are converged to have regional endothermy, retaining metabolic heat via vascular countercurrent heat exchangers. Yet, their adaptive significance remains debated. While previous studies proposed potential benefits of elevated body temperature, enhanced controllability of body temperature enabled by heat exchangers may also be important. Some endothermic teleosts (e.g. bigeye tuna) alter rates of body temperature change depending on dive phases to maximize foraging time in deep, cold waters while minimizing recovery time in shallow, warm water

The stability of sunflower oil body emulsions is mainly governed by interfacial phospholipids and proteins, whereas the role of endogenous polyphenols remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of chlorogenic acid (CGA) on physical stability. Reconstructed oil body proteins (ROBPs) and emulsions (ROBEs) were used as model systems. CGA decreased β-turn content from 43.06% in 0 mg-CGA-ROBPs to 26.50% in 38 mg-CGA-ROBPs. For ROBPs, as CGA addition increased from 0 to 38 mg, the emulsifying activity index increased from 27.91 to 77.32 m2/g and the emulsion stability index from 11.04

Obesity is a disease that is both costly and prevalent, and although the development and use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists has dramatically altered the landscape of obesity treatment, there remains a need to identify alternate approaches to reduce body weight. Amylin, a pancreatic hormone, has been viewed as a favorable candidate for novel obesity pharmacotherapies due to its ability to suppress feeding and body weight through its actions in the brain. Although research initially focused on hindbrain sites of action for amylin, more recent work has identified other central nucle

Repositioning of residents often require forward bending awkward postures, which can lead to low back pain. As a result, interventions that provide training in ergonomic principles are crucial to minimize work-related strain on the lower back. This RCT investigated the effects of tailored ergonomics training on nurses' movement behavior, upper body flexion, lateral flexion and rotation during repositioning. n = 35 nurses participated (intervention group: n = 15, control group: n = 20). Data were collected at baseline and at ten weeks (movement observation sheet, 3D motion capturing (Xsens)). T

While temporal coordination of nonverbal behaviors is considered crucial for successful communication, the underlying behavioral phenomena are poorly understood, and it remains unclear how coordination dynamics adapt to different social task demands. This study explores changes in interpersonal synchrony as dyads transition from a casual getting-acquainted conversation to a hierarchical conflict resolution task. Using full-body motion capture, we compared temporal alignment patterns in movement activity, head orientation, and body posture of 66 dyads interacting in both conditions. Results sho

BACKGROUND: Intra-lenticular foreign bodies are rare in veterinary medicine and uncommon in human medicine. Approximately 50% of perforating ocular injuries in canines have lenticular involvement. Treatment choices include conservative management and surgical options. Retained intra-lenticular foreign body with delayed removal has not been reported in animals.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 3-year-old male neutered Lurcher presented with right-sided ocular discomfort and a sealed full-thickness corneal perforation. The full ophthalmic examination could not be performed at the initial presentation due to

In the field of thermodynamics, entropy is a measure of the degree of disorder of the system considered focus. The direct measurement of entropy for microscopic systems involving molecule-level variations exists. However, for a macroscopic system, it still remains a challenge. The temperature reading is used as the primary index for understanding the quality of heat. In certain applications, the induced errors in the temperature measurement create complexity in decision making. One such case is the measurement of human body temperature for fever-like symptoms. This research aims to develop a d

The aim of this paper is to describe the distinctive ultrasound findings of a case of vaginal bleeding caused by the presence of a foreign body. We present the case of an infant who consulted for vaginal bleeding and foul-smelling discharge. The ultrasound revealed signs of vaginal distension due to heterogeneous-hematic contents and parietal thickening. At Doppler examination, a striking finding of increased vascularization limited to the upper two-thirds of the vaginal wall was found, which was initially interpreted as a sign of local inflammation suggesting the presence of an underlying for
