The profile of chronic hyperplastic candidiasis: a clinico-pathological study.

The aims of this study were investigation of clinical presentation, systemic factors, and long-term malignant transformation rate in chronic hyperplastic candidiasis versus leukoplakia. This is a retrospective case-controlled study of cases with chronic hyperplastic candidiasis and leukoplakia without dysplasia, diagnosed between 2000 and 2013. A database was created, and all additional biopsies from the same cases were searched up to 2022, for records of oral malignant transformation. Associations between microscopic diagnoses and clinical features of lesions and clinical outcomes of patients…

STAT1 Mutations in Chronic Mucocutaneous Candidiasis Diagnosed in an Adult.

A 30-year-old man presented with oral candidiasis and a history of lung abscess. He experienced recurring oral and skin candidiasis in childhood but spent long periods without any infections. Therefore, immunodeficiency was suspected. T and B lymphocyte and natural killer cell counts as well as immunoglobulin levels were normal. Human immunodeficiency virus test results were negative. Therefore, we suspected chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC). The signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) mutation, the leading cause of CMC, was detected by exome sequencing. Most cases of STA…

Congenital candidiasis in a full-term infant: A case report.

Congenital systemic candidiasis is a rare disease observed in both full-term and preterm infants. It can occur with or without congenital cutaneous candidiasis (CCC) and to date, only a few cases have been reported in the literature. We report here, a case of a full-term newborn who presented with diffuse skin eruptions at birth. Blood, urine, and skin scraping cultures were positive and the aetiological agent was Candida albicans. After six weeks of anti-fungal treatment with fluconazole, the newborn was cured. Early diagnosis is crucial in preventing complications caused by candidiasis in ne…

The pathology of canine mammary candidiasis with embolic dissemination in a dog.

Candidiasis is a fungal disease caused by Candida albicans or other members of the genus Candida. Descriptions of candidiasis are comparatively reduced in veterinary relative to human medicine, with no cases of mammary candidiasis being identified in pet animals. This report presents the cytological, pathological, and molecular findings of mammary candidiasis with embolic dissemination in a postpartum dog. A 1-year-old, female Shih-tzu dog that had recently given birth was admitted to a veterinary teaching hospital in Southern Brazil after repeated episodes of intermittent mammary disease and …

Congenital cutaneous candidiasis in a premature neonate: A case report.

Congenital cutaneous candidiasis (CCC) is a rare and usually benign disorder that develops within the first week of life. It predominantly presents with diffuse maculopapular and papulopustular erythematous desquamating patches. We report a preterm neonate with respiratory distress syndrome and skin diffuse maculopapular lesions at birth. Candida albicans was isolated from skin and gastrointestinal fluid culture; she underwent medical treatment with topical and systemic antifungal with clinical improvement and skin lesions resolution.

Clinical challenges in diagnosis and treatment of recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis is a common infection associated most often with the overgrowth of the fungal species Candida albicans. Although most women will have at least one episode of vulvovaginal candidiasis in their lifetime, some will experience recurrent infections. Recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis can significantly impact quality of life, causing both physical and psychological symptoms, and poses a substantial financial burden for women and the health care system. Acute vulvovaginal candidiasis infections are often diagnosed symptomatically by clinicians or self-diagnosed by patients th…

Comparative evaluation of fluconazole and clotrimazole in treatment of oral candidiasis.

CONTEXT: Oral candidiasis is the most common opportunistic infection affecting the oral mucosa. Most commonly, the lesions are caused by Candida albicans and other organisms isolated are Candida glabrata, Candida krusei, Candida parapsilosis and Candida dubliniensis. As an opportunistic infection, it is seen affecting the young, old and debilitating people. This infection is seen to be enervative, exhausting and crippling; a few routinely employed antifungal agents are used in our study. AIMS: We aimed to compare the clinical and mycological effectiveness of topical fluconazole and clotrimazo…

Akt-2 Is a Potential Therapeutic Target for Disseminated Candidiasis.

Akt-1 and Akt-2 are the major isoforms of the serine/threonine Akt family that play a key role in controlling immune responses. However, the involvement of Akt-1 and Akt-2 isoforms in antifungal innate immunity is completely unknown. In this study, we show that Akt2 -/-, but not Akt1 -/-, mice are protected from lethal Candida albicans infection. Loss of Akt-2 facilitates the recruitment of neutrophils and macrophages to the spleen and increases reactive oxygen species expression in these cells. Treating C57BL/6 mice with a specific inhibitor for Akt-2, but not Akt-1, provides protection from

A case of chronic disseminated candidiasis in metamizole-induced neutropaenia.

Chronic disseminated candidiasis (CDC) is a severe complication of a disseminated yeast infection mainly seen after prolonged chemotherapy-induced neutropaenia in the context of haematological malignancy. We present a case of CDC in a patient with metamizole-induced neutropaenia. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case described in this context. Furthermore, we highlight the role of steroids in the management of this disease.

Invasive candidiasis in a neonatal intensive care unit in Fukuoka.

BACKGROUND: Invasive candidiasis (IC) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in preterm infants. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of IC infection in newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of a tertiary hospital in Japan, and to identify specific predisposing factors for IC. METHODS: We retrospectively collected data on demographics, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of infants with IC, who were discharged from a tertiary NICU in Japan between January 2009 and December 2020. We compared predisposing factors associated with the occurrence of e…

An evaluation of ibrexafungerp for the treatment of invasive candidiasis: the evidence to date.

INTRODUCTION: Invasive fungal infections, especially candidemia and invasive candidiasis, cause significant morbidity and mortality. The epidemiology of candida infections have changed dramatically due to an increase in risk factors associated with the development of infection and the emergence of resistant isolates such as C. glabrata and C. auris. This has prompted the search for novel and effective antifungals. AREAS COVERED: The results of in vitro studies evaluating the activity of ibrexafungerp against Candida species are reviewed and the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic properties are h…

Chitotriosidase Activity Is Counterproductive in a Mouse Model of Systemic Candidiasis.

Mammalian cells do not produce chitin, an insoluble polymer of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (GlcNAc), although chitin is a structural component of the cell wall of pathogenic microorganisms such as Candida albicans. Mammalian cells, including cells of the innate immune system elaborate chitinases, including chitotriosidase (Chit1), which may play a role in the anti-fungal immune response. In the current study, using knockout mice, we determined the role of Chit1 against systemic candidiasis. Chit1-deficient mice showed significant decrease in kidney fungal burden compared to mice expressing the func…

Performance of the T2Candida Panel for the Diagnosis of Intra-abdominal Candidiasis.

Performance of T2Candida for detecting intra-abdominal candidiasis (IAC) was assessed in 48 high-risk patients. T2Candida sensitivity/specificity and positive/negative predictive values were 33%/93% and 71%/74%, respectively. IAC was present in 100% of cases with concordant positive T2Candida/1,3-beta-d-glucan and absent in 90% of concordant negative results. Combination T2Candida/1,3-beta-d-glucan may help guide treatment decisions.

Influence of recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis on quality of life issues.

PURPOSE: More than 370 million women will experience recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC) during their lifetime. However, RVVC is often trivialized as clinically insignificant and not worthy of research funding. We evaluated the influence of RVVC on the quality of life in affected women. METHODS: The validated World Health Organization Quality of Life Abbreviated Assessment (WHOQOL-Bref) questionnaire was administered to 100 women with RVVC and to 101 epidemiologically matched women with no history of vulvovaginal candidiasis. RVVC was defined as at least four episodes of clinical and cu…
