INTRODUCTION: Catastrophic polyethylene failure is a rare complication of ceramic-on-polyethylene total hip arthroplasty due to the favorable tribological characteristics of ceramic. Failure of the polyethylene liner can be disastrous, increasing periprosthetic osteolysis, metallosis, and risk of dislocation. Complications associated with ceramic-on-polyethylene articulations have been studied extensively, however, only few reports have described its catastrophic wear. BACKGROUND: The treatment of calcaneal fractures is challenging. Internal fixation and grafting with sintered beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) ceramic is alternative to bone grafting in the treatment of calcaneal fractures.

A 16-year-old woman with congenitally missing permanent mandibular second premolars and central incisors presented for treatment. The prosthodontic treatment consisted of placing 2 internal tri-lobed narrow platform implants in the mandibular second premolar spaces, along with zirconium abutments and all-ceramic crowns. PURPOSE: The aim of this prospective study was to determine whether a machine-fabricated titanium fixed partial denture veneered with a low-temperature fused porcelain is an acceptable treatment modality.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study originally included 25 patients with 37 fixed partial dentures of three to seven units, with a total of 151 units including 98 abutments. A clinical examination using the California Dental Association quality evaluation system and radiologic examination and registration of complications was conducted at the time of insertion and after 1 and 2 years.

Recent research in total hip arthroplasty has focused on attempts to decrease wear at the femoral head-acetabulum articulation, to limit the production of debris that is believed to lead to osteolysis and prosthetic loosening.
