Association of dietary intake and serum concentration of omega-3 fatty acids on celiac disease: evidence from observational study and Mendelian randomization.

OBJECTIVE: The association between omega-3 fatty acids (O3FA) and celiac disease lacks sufficient investigation. METHODS: Utilizing data gleaned from the 2009 to 2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), this research comprises a sample of 13 403 adults, each aged 20 years and above. We conducted a multivariable logistic regression analysis to assess the association between dietary intake of O3FA and celiac disease. Subsequently, a two-sample Mendelian randomization was performed to estimate the unconfounded causal relationship between serum O3FA and celiac disease. The

Omega 3 fatty acids preserve testicular function by ameliorating BPF-induced dysthyroidism: role of p53/Bcl-2 signaling and proton pump activities.

OBJECTIVE: Bisphenol F (BPF) is an endocrinedisrupting chemical, but information about its effect on thyroid hormones has not been fully explored. Omega 3 fatty acids (O3FA), on the other hand, are antioxidant and antiapoptotic agents. Therefore, this study explored the role and associated molecular mechanism of O3FA in BPF-induced hypothyroidism-mediated testicular dysfunction in male Wistar rats. METHODS: Twenty (20) male Wistar rats were randomized into four groups (n=5/group), namely: the control group; the BPF treated group (30 mg/kg of BPF); and the intervention groups (30mg/kg BPF + 10

Long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are reduced in neonates with substantial brain injury undergoing therapeutic hypothermia after hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Although therapeutic hypothermia is an effective treatment, substantial chronic neurological impairment often persists. The long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), docosahexaenoic (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic (EPA) acids, offer therapeutic potential in the post-acute phase. To understand how PUFAs are affected by HIE and therapeutic hypothermia we quantified for the first time the effects of HIE and therapeutic hypothermia on blood PUFA levels and lipid peroxidation. In a cross-sectional a

Longitudinal investigation of the relationship between omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and neuropsychological functioning in recent-onset psychosis: A randomized clinical trial.

Alterations in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), including omega-3 and omega-6, have been implicated in the pathophysiology of psychotic disorders, but little is known about their associations with neuropsychological functioning. The present study includes 46 recent-onset psychosis patients who participated in a larger (n = 50) double blind, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial comparing 16 weeks of treatment with either risperidone + fish oil (FO) (EPA 740 mg and DHA 400 mg daily) or risperidone + placebo and completed neuropsychological assessments at the baseline timepoint. Participation of the nucleus accumbens dopaminergic system in the antidepressant-like actions of a diet rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids.

The beneficial effects of omega (ω)-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) supplementation on major depressive disorder have been actively studied, but the underlying mechanism remains unknown. The present study examined the involvement of the nucleus accumbens (NAc) dopaminergic systems in behavioral changes in mice fed a diet high in ω-3 PUFAs. Mice fed a diet containing about double the amount of ω-3 PUFAs (krill oil (KO) diet) exerted shorter immobility times in the forced swim test (FST) than mice fed a control diet, containing only α-linolenic acid (ALA) as ω-3 PUFAs. The shorter immobility

Suppression of β1-Adrenoceptor Autoantibodies is Involved in the Antiarrhythmic Effects of Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Male and Female Hypertensive Rats.

The arrhythmogenic potential of β1-adrenoceptor autoantibodies (β1-AA), as well as antiarrhythmic properties of omega-3 in heart diseases, have been reported while underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. We aimed to test our hypothesis that omega-3 (eicosapentaenoic acid-EPA, docosahexaenoic acid-DHA) may inhibit matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-2) activity to prevent cleavage of β1-AR and formation of β1-AA resulting in attenuation of pro-arrhythmic connexin-43 (Cx43) and protein kinase C (PKC) signaling in the diseased heart. We have demonstrated that the appearance and increase of β1-AA i

Metabolomic Lipid Profile Changes in Patients with Heart Failure Undergoing Oral Nutritional Supplements Enriched with the Omega-3 (n-3) Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and Mediterranean Diet.

UNLABELLED: Chronic inflammation and metabolic dysregulation of heart failure (HF) often result in sarcopenia. The combined effect of Mediterranean diet (MD) and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on the advanced lipidomic profile of HF patients remains poorly defined. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to analyze the specific effects of a MD plus omega-3-enriched oral nutritional supplements (MD+ONS) versus MD alone on the metabolic lipid profile of patients with HF, stratified by sarcopenia status. METHODS: In this prospective, open-label, randomized controlled trial, 38 patients with HF were a

Dietary omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids relate to lower liver lipids and adipose-tissue insulin resistance, modulated by fatty acid desaturase 1 rs174546 in type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Type 2 diabetes and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) frequently coexist and increase cardiovascular risk. Although habitual omega-3 (ω3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) may improve cardiovascular risk, their metabolic effects in type 2 diabetes and MASLD remain unclear. We hypothesized that ω3-PUFA intake reduces hepatocellular lipid content (HCL) in individuals carrying single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the fatty acid desaturase (FADS) 1 and FADS2 genes, which associate with higher desaturase activity. METHODS: We cross-sectional

Does parenteral Omega-3 fatty acid administration increase the risk of atrial fibrillation? An analysis of the current evidence.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: In 2023, the Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee (PRAC) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) issued new safety information on oral fish oil (FO) pharmacotherapy. This information indicated a dose-related increased risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) with FO in patients with established cardiovascular disease (CVD). The aim of this study is to analyse the existing evidence on this risk and establish whether it can be extrapolated to FO-enriched intravenous lipid emulsions (FO-ILEs) or to other patient groups, such as critically ill patients with organ dysfunction. Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation of chia (Salvia hispanica L.), a rich source of omega-3 fatty acid.

Chia (Salvia hispanica L.), a nutritionally valuable crop, is the richest source of α-linolenic acid, a key omega-3 fatty acid. Despite its nutritional benefits, a stable genetic transformation method for chia is not available. This study presents a sonication-assisted Agrobacterium-mediated transformation protocol optimized for high-efficiency transformation of chia seedlings. Key parameters including bacterial cell density, acetosyringone concentration, sonication duration, vacuum infiltration, and infection time were optimized. Results demonstrated that an optical density at 600 nm (OD600)

May omega-3 fatty acid dietary supplementation help reduce severe complications in Covid-19 patients?

In around 10% of SARS-CoV-2 infected patients, coronavirus disease-2019 (Covid-19) symptoms are complicated with a severe lung damage called Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), which is often lethal. ARDS is mainly associated with an uncontrolled overproduction of immune cells and cytokines, called "cytokine storm syndrome"; it appears 7-15 days following the onset of symptoms, leading to systemic inflammation and multiple organ failure. Because they are well-known metabolic precursors of specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPMs), omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (
