In the present study, two groups of 21 subjects with either high or low fear of both snakes (or spiders) and damaged electrical outlets/appliances participated in a two phase experiment. After reading a description of an illusory correlation experiment, subjects were asked to imagine themselves participating in it. They rated their expectations for the number of occasions on which slides of snakes, electrical outlets, and flowers would be followed by either a shock, tone, or nothing. As predicted, both high and low-fear subjects reported an expectancy bias for both phylogenetic and ontogenetic…

We report two cases of von Willebrand (type I) disease with vWF antigen levels of 21 and 25%, vWF ristocetin cofactor concentrations of 32 and 30%, and coagulation FVIII levels of 10 and 50% respectively. Template bleeding times were 20 and 11 minutes respectively. Both of these women exhibited a progressive and marked improvement of the vWF/FVIII complex during pregnancy. In the first, all parameters had completely normalized in the 37th week when a cesarean section was performed without hemorrhagic complications. The second case had borderline normal levels of the vWF/FVIII complex in the 37

We have studied 204 healthy male subjects ranging in age from 20 to 59 years. They were divided into four 10-year age groups. Each age group was further divided into 2 subgroups with high and low Panic-Fear scores. The ventilatory activities of all the groups were compared. In the younger generation (20-39 years), the low PF group revealed a higher slope in CO2 response curve than the high PF group (p less than 0.05). This result was considered to be related to the difference in CO2 production between the two groups. In the older age groups, however, the high PF subjects exhibited a tendency t…

We have seen six patients, over the past two years, who had developed intense fear of standing or walking as a result of accidental falls. None of these patients showed any evidence of neuromuscular impairment that might account for their inability to walk. However, the results of psychological evaluations of all these patients revealed high degrees of focal anxiety that was phobic in nature and related to standing or walking. Personality assessments of these patients showed little or no evidence of psychopathology of a generalized nature or of personality trait disturbance. The phobic reactio…

Pavlovian conditioning paradigms model the learned fear associations inherent in posttraumatic stress disorder, including the renewal of inappropriate fear responses following extinction learning. However, very few studies in humans investigate the underlying neural mechanisms involved in fear renewal despite its clinical importance. To address this issue, our lab designed a novel, immersive-reality Pavlovian fear acquisition, extinction, recall, and renewal paradigm. We utilized an ecological threat - a snake striking towards the participant - as the unconditioned stimulus (US). Context and b…

The relevance of contextual factors in shaping neural mechanisms underlying visceral pain-related fear learning remains elusive. However, benign interoceptive sensations, which shape patients' clinical reality, may context-dependently become conditioned predictors of impending visceral pain. In a novel context-dependent interoceptive conditioning paradigm, we elucidated the putative role of the central fear network in the acquisition and extinction of pain-related fear induced by interoceptive cues and pain-predictive contexts. In this fMRI study involving rectal distensions as a clinically-re…

The main olfactory epithelium initiates the process of odor encoding. Recent studies have demonstrated intergenerationally inherited changes in the olfactory system in response to fear conditioning, resulting in increases in olfactory sensory neuron frequencies and altered responses to odors. We investigated changes in the cellular composition of the olfactory epithelium in response to an aversive stimulus. Here, we achieve volumetric cellular resolution to demonstrate that olfactory fear conditioning increases the number of odor-encoding neurons in mice that experience odor-shock conditioning…

Nucleus accumbens (NAc) dopamine 2 receptor expressing medium spiny neurons (D2-MSNs) are involved in stress and aversive learning, where repeated stress increases excitatory spine density. Whether this plasticity reflects cue-specific learning or generalized stress response remains unknown. Using Pavlovian fear conditioning in Tac1-Cre/Tdtomato mice, we dissociated associative plasticity from the effects of foot shock stress. Acute fear conditioning produced distinct physiological outcomes between stress in the presence or absence of a cue. Conditioning for 7 days consolidated cue learning an…

BACKGROUND: In nature, animals must learn to recognize danger signals and respond immediately to threats to improve their environmental adaptation. However, excessive fear responses can lead to diseases such as post-traumatic stress disorder, wherein traumatic events result in persistent traumatic memories. Therefore, erasing pathological fear memories in vivo is a crucial topic in neuroscience for understanding the nature of memories and treating clinically relevant diseases.
MAIN TEXT: This article reviews recent studies on fear memory erasure, erasure of short- and long-term memory, fear m…

The potential contribution of the ion channels that control the excitability of the midline and intralaminar nuclei of the thalamus to the modulation of behaviors has not been well studied. In this study, we used both global genetic deletion (knock-out, KO) and thalamus-specific molecular knock-down (KD) approaches to investigate the role of thalamic CaV3.1 T-type calcium channels (T-channels) in fear learning and fear responses. Previously, we have shown that the dominant subtype of T-channels in the central medial nucleus of the thalamus (CMT) is the CaV3.1 isoform and that CMT neurons from …

Extinction learning is central to behavioral therapies for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but relapse poses a major challenge to this approach. Recent work has revealed a critical role for the thalamic nucleus reuniens (RE) in the suppression of extinguished fear memories. Silencing the RE yields a relapse of extinguished fear (i.e., "circuit-induced relapse"). Considerable work suggests that RE may contribute to extinction by inhibiting the retrieval of hippocampal (HPC)-dependent fear memories. To test this hypothesis, we first examined whether undermining the formation of contextual…

Cognitive behavioral therapy, rooted in exposure therapy, is currently the primary approach employed in the treatment of anxiety-related conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In laboratory settings, fear extinction in animals is a commonly employed technique to investigate exposure therapy; however, the precise mechanisms underlying fear extinction remain elusive. Casein kinase 2 (CK2), which regulates neuroplasticity via phosphorylation of its substrates, has a significant influence in various neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, …

A feared possible self refers to the unwanted characteristics that a person may possess or develop. We tested an experimental paradigm to target fear of possible self using imagery rescripting. A student sample (n = 91), with moderate obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms, engaged in written and audio-guided exercises to evoke episodic future mental imagery that represented their feared possible self. Participants were then randomized between imagery rescripting or neutral imagery control tasks. The results revealed no difference between conditions in fear of self or general obsessional belie…

In this issue of Cell Host & Microbe, Zhang et al. show that long-term oral administration of a pectin-derived prebiotic broadly enhanced IgA responses to commensals in the small intestine. This effect required T cells and involved Lachnospiraceae A2, suggesting that a few symbionts promote IgA responses to many commensals.

1. Comprehensive knowledge of innate fear in chickens has important implications for understanding the adaptation of native Japanese chickens in modern production and behavioural changes caused by modern breeding goals. Innate fear behaviour seen in chicks from six native Japanese chicken breeds;, Ingie (IG), Nagoya (NAG), Oh-Shamo (OSM), Tosa-Jidori (TJI), Tosa-Kukin (TKU) and Ukokkei (UK), were compared with those in two lines of White Leghorn (WL-G and WL-T) in tonic immobility (TI) and open field (OF) tests.2. TI and OF tests were conducted for 267 chicks at 0-1 days of age in the eight br…

OBJECTIVE: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a neuropsychiatric disorder that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Exposure therapy is a common treatment for PTSD, but it has varying levels of efficacy depending on sex. In this study, we aimed to compare the sexual dimorphism in brain activation during the extinction of fear conditioning in male and female rats by detecting the c-fos levels in the whole brain.
METHODS: Thirty-two rats (Male: n = 16; Female: n = 16) were randomly separated into the extinction group as well as the non-extinction group, and fear…
