The tonsils and pustulosis palmaris et plantaris as viewed against the genetic background.

In spite of considerable research so far made on the etiology of pustulosis palmaris et plantaris (PPP), several points remain obscure. However, since tonsillectomy has been found to improve the symptoms and cure the disease, some researchers have suspected PPP to be a tonsillar focal infection. Another well-known fact is that Streptococci too are associated with tonsillar focal infection, and that even in patients with PPP, high antibody titres against Streptococci have been observed. The authors have obtained results suggesting the existence of a genetic origin in patients with chronic tonsi…

Susceptibility of desert sheep to infection with Schistosoma mansoni of Northern Sudan.

Each of two Desert Sheep was infected with 1500 cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni of Northern Sudan. Signs of infection were anorexia, soft faces, progressive weakness and loss of wool. The sheep were killed 254 and 269 days after infection. The findings were heavy infiltration of the lamina propria with inflammatory cells, numerous ova in the submucosa, hyperplasia of lymphoid tissue, oedema of the mesenteric lymph nodes, and focal pulmonary oedema and congestion. There were egg granulomas, focal necrosis, schistosomal pigment, fatty change, depletion of glycogen and reduction in the activity

Focal Intramedullary Spinal Cord Lesion in Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome: Toxoplasmosis Versus Lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: Neurologic complications are common in patients with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). Although both the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system can be affected, 80% of patients with HIV/AIDS have CNS involvement during the course of their illness. The brain is the primary site of HIV/AIDS-associated CNS complications. Spinal cord involvement is rare, particularly focal intramedullary spinal cord lesions without any associated cerebral lesions. Among various opportunistic infections and malignancies, toxoplasmosis and

Infection and transmission pattern of Schistosoma mansoni in the Managil irrigation scheme, Sudan.

The endemicity (prevalence, intensity and incidence) of schistosomiasis mansoni and its patterns of transmission (focality, seasonality) were studied in five villages in the Managil irrigation scheme, Sudan. Marked differences between villages were observed in overall prevalence (33.3%-54.8%), intensity (77.3-135.0 eggs/g faeces), incidence (15.2%-57.9%) and age-related patterns of Schistosoma mansoni infections. Overall, prevalence and intensity of infection peaked in those aged 10-14 years and then declined slowly with increasing age. However, there were second, smaller peaks in both prevale

Ultrasound Placental Remodeling Patterns and Pathology Characteristics in Patients with History of Mild SARS-CoV-2 Infection during Pregnancy.

Introduction: This research aims to describe a progressive pattern of ultrasound placental remodeling in patients with a history of SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy. Materials and Methods: This was a longitudinal, cohort study which enrolled 23 pregnant women with a history of former mild SARS-CoV-2 infection during the current pregnancy. Four obstetricians analyzed placental ultrasound images from different gestational ages following COVID infection and identified the presence and degree of remodeling. We assessed the inter-rater agreement and the interclass correlation coefficients. Pat

[Post-infectious glomerulonephritis].

Post-infectious glomerulonephrites (GNs) include a wide spectrum of nephropathies, with known etiological agent, bacterial, parasitic, viral. Among GNs secondary to bacterial infections, post-streptococcal GN is the most frequent; nevertheless, its incidence in developed countries has decreased during the last 20 years, while some of the characteristics such as types of infection, exposed subjects, clinical and evolutionary patterns have changed. Prognosis has worsened and is correlated with some clinical and histological parameters. The viral infection-related GNs include those associated wit

Fast Diagnosis (6h) of clinically silent pyonephrosis by combined use of 99mTc-MDP and 67Ga citrate.

A fast diagnosis (6h) of clinically latent pyonephrosis by combined use of 99mTc-MDP and 67Ga-citrate is reported. This technique combines the potential early detection of focal infectious processes by 67Ga and the "high-pulse" separation possibility of multiple isotopes. A brief prospective study (6 months) showed the interest of this technique: in six cases focal bone and/or joint infections were found three of which were absolutely latent clinically.

[Pathomorphological aspects and outcome of influenza virus and Klebsiella pneumonia in the experiment].

Mice infected with K. pneumoniae against the background of prior introduction of influenza A/Hong-Kong/68 virus developed focal bronchial pneumonia with leukocytic exudate that started resolving at day 10 of the experiment. At about this time and later there appeared in the lungs spots of apparent proliferative processes characteristic of productive inflammation. These were manifested by diffuse and focal infiltration of the interstice with plasmablasts, plasmacytes, histiocytes, lymphocytes, by proliferation of the vascular endothelium epithelium, of the bronchi, bronchioles, alveolar cells t

Single-section multiplex spatial proteomics of immune microenvironments in kidney transplantation.

Characterizing kidney disease is challenged by marked cellular heterogeneity and limited tissue availability from renal biopsies. Conventional diagnostic workflows rely on multiple serial sections for parallel staining, increasing tissue consumption, sampling bias, and loss of spatial information, thereby constraining molecular characterization within intact tissue architecture. High-plex spatial proteomics may overcome these limitations by enabling comprehensive molecular profiling on a single section. Here, we present and evaluate a high-plex cyclic immunofluorescence imaging workflow (MACSi

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma misdiagnosed as palatal odontogenic infection: an overview on the differential diagnosis of palatal lesions.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) accounts for approximately 30% of malignant salivary gland tumors and approximately 30% occur in minor salivary glands. The palate is the most frequent localization for those arising in minor glands. A 33-year-old male patient with MEC of the hard palate was treated as an acute odontogenic infection, which was not cured after tooth endodontic treatments, repeated incisions and antibiotics. On the hard palate ovoid, a hard painless mass, which had not extended over the middle palatal line, was observed. Partial maxillectomy was performed. A review of the literatur

Large erupting complex odontoma: a case report.

Odontomas are the most common odontogenic tumours. They are usually asymptomatic and are often discovered during routine radiography. We report a case of a large erupting complex odontoma that caused pain, infection and facial asymmetry. This case is significant as there are few reports of complex odontoma erupting in the oral cavity.

Does dental disease hurt your heart?

Recent research has yielded conflicting data regarding the relationship between dental disease, particularly periodontitis, and cardiovascular disease. A causative relationship would have major ramifications for health care. There is a plausible theoretical basis for such a link, as increased levels of inflammatory mediators may increase the risk of atherosclerotic plaque formation. Nevertheless, a clinical confirmation of a causative relationship has been difficult, in part because cardiovascular disease and periodontal disease share common risk factors such as increasing age and tobacco use,

Odontogenic infections. Complications. Systemic manifestations.

The term, odontogenic infection refers to an infection that originates in the tooth proper or in the tissues that closely surround it; said infection then progresses along the periodontia down to the apex, involving periapical bone and from this area, it then spreads through the bone and periosteum towards near-by or more distant structures. The relevance of this type of infection lies in that it can cause infections that compromise more distant structures (via direct spread and distant spread), for example, intracraneal, retropharyngeal and pulmonary pleural infections. Dissemination by means

Epidemic encephalitis and American neurology, 1919-1940.

Encephalitis lethargica, also known as epidemic encephalitis, emerged as a new infectious disease near the end of the First World War. Bacteriologic, epidemiologic, and clinical investigation produced no clear consensus regarding the nature of the disease, even as several other experimentally demonstrable "encephalitides" appeared on the scene. By 1940, new encephalitis lethargica cases had almost entirely disappeared, and neurologists renamed this once-novel infection as an amorphous syndrome of marginal interest. A variety of forces influencing the fate of encephalitis lethargica's epidemic

Human immunodeficiency virus nephropathy.

Varying components of the syndrome of human immunodeficiency virus nephropathy (HIVN) have been described, the most pertinent including proteinuria/nephrotic syndrome, progressive azotemia, normal blood pressure, enlarged and hyperechoic kidneys, rapid progression to end-stage renal disease (ESRD), and no response to treatment regimens. The diagnosis of HIVN requires identification of excessive proteinuria or albuminuria, determined by a total protein excretion on a timed urine collection or a high protein/creatinine ratio in a random specimen. Various pathological lesions have been found in H

[Intra-dental route of experimental tuberculosis infection].

A total of 13 dogs weighing 13-15 kg were infected by intra-dental route with the tuberculosis mycobacterium strain H37R in a dose of 0.5 ml in the 5th dilution according to a turbidity standard. Two dogs were given intravenously the same dose of tuberculosis mycobacteria and they formed a control group. The observation varied from 10 days to 5 months. It was found tuberculosis development in intradental contamination could be attended by generalized specific affection of the viscera and development of a "minor" tuberculosis inflammation in the peridental tissues.
