Nitric oxide, a noxious and free-radical gas, plays a key role in vasodilatation, inflammation, immunity, and neurotoxicity. Studies have shown that a recently detected NO synthase inducible isoform, found in astrocytes in the optic nerve heads of glaucoma patients, could stimulate excessive production of NO. The purpose of our study was to elucidate the role of NO production in the pathogenesis of glaucoma. We measured the concentrations of NO in aqueous humor from 11 patients with acute angle-closure glaucoma (AACG) and 14 patients with cataract. All samples were collected from patients who

We reported a 76-year-old woman with cerebellar degeneration who had transient monocular visual loss following the acute attacks of angle-closure glaucoma. The episodes occurred only at night approximately every ten days. She denied pain or any other associated symptoms. Ophthalmological examinations including intraorbital pressure, ocular fundus, visual acuity and visual field showed no abnormalities between the attacks. Provisional diagnosis on admission was amaurosis fugax from retinal embolization. After admission, she developed a typical acute attack of glaucoma accompanied by severe pain

OBJECTIVE: Pseudophakic malignant glaucoma (PMG) is an uncommon but severe postoperative complication that poses a significant threat to vision. Early detection of PMG in patients with primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) is imperative for effective intervention. This study sought to determine whether specific morphometric indicators could predict the onset of PMG.
METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional analysis was performed on data collected from June 2016 to May 2023. The study population comprised PACG patients who developed PMG after phacoemulsification, with a control group of eyes t

There is distinct pathogenesis between primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG). Although elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is the major risk factor for glaucoma, non-IOP risk factors such as vascular abnormalities and lower systolic/diastolic perfusion pressure may play a role in the pathogenic process. This study aimed to compare the vessel density (VD) in the optic disc and macula using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) between POAG and PACG eyes. Thirty-two POAG eyes, 30 PACG eyes, and 39 control eyes were included. All the optic disc VD

Direct comparison data on spatial patterns of visual field (VF) defects among primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG), high-tension glaucoma (HTG) and normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) are not available. We aimed to compare the intraocular asymmetry of VF loss among patients with PACG, NTG and HTG across different severity levels. A total of 162 eyes of 114 patients with PACG, 111 eyes of 74 patients with HTG and 148 eyes of 102 patients with NTG were included. VF defects were categorized into 3 stages (early, moderate, and advanced), and each hemifield was divided into 5 regions according to the Gl

A decreased count of retinal photoreceptors all over the fundus and a loss of retinal pigment epithelium cells mainly in the parapapillary region have been reported to be associated with glaucoma. This study addressed the question whether this cell loss in the deep retinal layers may be connected with a change of the choroidal thickness in glaucomatous eyes. Histological sections of 12 eyes with secondary angle closure glaucoma due to a malignant melanoma of the ciliary body and 20 eyes with a malignant choroidal melanoma and normal intraocular pressure were histomorphometrically evaluated. To evaluate the rate and determinants of visual field (VF) progression across different severities of primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG). Chinese patients with PACG who had ≥ 5 reliable VFs and ≥ 5 years of follow-up were included. Disease severity was classified by baseline mean deviation (MD) as mild (≥-6.0dB), moderate (-6.01 to -12.0dB) or severe (<-12.0dB). VF progression was categorized as slow (>-0.25dB/year), intermediate (-0.25 to -1.0dB/year), or fast (≤-1.0dB/year). Among 783 patients evaluated, 477 met the inclusion criteria: 140 (29.4%) mild, 161 (33.8%) moderate, and 176 (36.9

Infectious endophthalmitis after ocular surgery is a rare complication that can result in severe vision loss. Moraxella nonliquefaciens is an opportunistic pathogen that rarely causes ocular infections. We report a rare case of Moraxella nonliquefaciens endophthalmitis complicated by secondary angle-closure glaucoma occurring years after trabeculectomy and cataract surgery. Cycloplegia resulted in deepening of the anterior chamber and opening of the angles. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing of the aqueous humor identified Moraxella nonliquefaciens. Following multiple intravitreal vancomyc

Implantable collamer lenses (ICL) have revolutionized the management of high refractive errors, yet they present unique challenges. We present a case of a fixed and dilated atonic pupil following acute-angle closure glaucoma from pupillary block after ICL implantation, known as Urrets-Zavalia syndrome. A 39-year-old woman developed acute ocular pain and headaches after surgery, leading to elevated intraocular pressure and subsequent complications necessitating ICL removal. This case highlights the need for prompt identification and management of elevated intraocular pressure to prevent irrever
