Effect of segmentation techniques (manual versus semiautomatic) on the accuracy of the linear measurements driven from the reconstructed mandibular condyle using CBCT.

BACKGROUND: Assessment of the effect of segmentation technique (manual Vs semiautomatic) on the accuracy of linear measurements of the CBCT reconstructed 3D mandibular condyle compared to the real measurements of the actual condyle. MATERIALS AND METHODS: fifteen dry mandibular with 30 condyles were included in this study, where condylar real linear measurements (L1, L2& L3) were assessed using a digital caliper. Then each mandible was assembled to a skull in a normally closed TMJ position, this assembly was scanned using Planmeca Promax 3D Mid CBCT machine with a standard imaging protocol. La

Mandibular reconstruction with a custom-made CAD/CAM porous titanium prosthesis in a 10-year-old patient and the long-term prognosis.

Reconstruction of the mandible in growing patients following mandibulectomy is crucial for minimizing deformities and disabilities. Surgeons have been exploring various methods for mandibular reconstruction in growing patients. This case report describes the use of a custom-made CAD/CAM porous titanium prosthesis for mandibular reconstruction after the resection of ameloblastoma in a growing child, where the condylar process on the affected side was preserved. This approach avoided harvesting from a secondary donor site, such as the fibula or iliac crest. Preoperative virtual surgical planning…

The outcome of skeletofacial reconstruction with mandibular rotation for management of asymmetric skeletal class III deformity: A three-dimensional computer-assisted investigation.

The mandibular proximal ramus segments should be moved and rotated during orthognathic surgery-based skeletofacial reconstruction for the correction of challenging patients with facial asymmetry and malocclusion, but quantitative data regarding this rotation were not sufficient to date. This 3D computer-assisted study measured the proximal ramus segment rotation after 3D simulation-guided two-jaw surgery in patients with facial asymmetric deformity and class III malocclusion (n = 31). Using 3D mandible models and a reliable proximal ramus segment-related plane, angular changes in pitch, roll a

Three-dimensional surgical modelling with an open-source software protocol: study of precision and reproducibility in mandibular reconstruction with the fibula free flap.

Very few surgical teams currently use totally independent and free solutions to perform three-dimensional (3D) surgical modelling for osseous free flaps in reconstructive surgery. This study assessed the precision and technical reproducibility of a 3D surgical modelling protocol using free open-source software in mandibular reconstruction with fibula free flaps and surgical guides. Precision was assessed through comparisons of the 3D surgical guide to the sterilized 3D-printed guide, determining accuracy to the millimetre level. Reproducibility was assessed in three surgical cases by volumetri…

Outcome analysis of mandibular condylar replacements in tumor and trauma reconstruction: a prospective analysis of 131 cases with long-term follow-up.

PURPOSE: Replacement of the mandibular condyle with alloplastic materials is sometimes required when the mandibular condyle is involved in pathology or trauma. Previous investigations into alloplastic mandibular condylar replacement have met with mixed results because they reported only a limited number of patients with short-term follow-up. This investigation sought to determine the long-term outcome of alloplastic replacement of the mandibular condyle in a large population of patients after disarticulation due to pathology or trauma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective, long-term

'AJ's Orbicularis Oris Stitch: A Novel and Simple Technique of Reconstructing Central Arch Mandibular Defects in Resource-Constrained Set Up'.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco smoking has a range of known and predictable adverse outcomes, and across the world sustained smoking reduction campaigns are targeted towards reducing individual and public risk and harm. Conversely, more than 87 million women, mostly in low- and middle-income countries, use smokeless tobacco, yet the research examining the effect of this form of tobacco exposure on women is remarkably scant. In central Australia, the chewing of wild Nicotiana spp., a tobacco plant, commonly known as pituri and mingkulpa, is practised by Aboriginal groups across a br

Reconstruction of mandibular defects in osteoradionecrosis and medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw using fibula free flap and management of postoperative wound infections.

BACKGROUND: Complications from osteoradionecrosis (ORN) and medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) include oro-cutaneous fistulas, necrotic bone exposure, soft-tissue defects, and pathologic fractures. The fibula free flap (FFF) is a common free flap method used to reconstruct the mandible in severe cases. Recently, we have used the FFF successfully for the reconstruction of ORN and MRONJ mandibular defects. We report this method as a recommended technique for the treatment of ORN and MRONJ and the management method of postoperative infections. METHODS: Four patients who were dia
