Evaluating the ergonomic aspects of laparoscopic energy devices: combination of a survey and a kinesiologic experiment.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate surgeons' ergonomic satisfaction when using laparoscopic energy devices and to investigate how prolonged use affects muscle fatigue and surgical performance. METHODS: A two-part study, including a survey and a kinesiologic experiment, was conducted to compare 4 laparoscopic energy devices (D1-D4). Thirty surgeons completed a structured survey assessing ergonomic factors such as device weight, grip strength, handle design, comfort, and trigger location. In parallel, a kinesiologic experiment involving 20 surgeons measured device activation force, surf…

Fatigue effects on quadriceps and hamstrings activation in dancers performing drop landings.

Fatigue may reduce a dancer's ability to maintain the muscle synergies required for stable human movement. Therefore, fatigue presents as a potential risk factor for injury in dancers. Activation patterns of the quadriceps and hamstrings muscle groups in athletic populations have been consistently reported to alter in response to fatigue during landing tasks. It is unknown whether dancers demonstrate similar muscle activation patterns, nor if dancers respond to fatiguing protocols, with regard to muscle activation, in the same manner as their athletic counter-parts. The purpose of this study w

Efficacy of high- versus moderate-intensity spatially distributed sequential stimulation in subjects with spinal cord injury: an isometric study.

For producing isometric contractions, spatially distributed sequential stimulation (SDSS) has been demonstrated to be superior to convention … n intensity levels. Statistical analysis indicated that the advantages of SDSS over SES in reducing muscle fatigue and enhancing force generation were significantly diminished at high intensity compared to moderate intensity. These findings provide valuable scientific insights into the practical applications of SDSS and contribute to a deeper understanding of it …

Effects of fatigue on intermuscular coordination during repetitive hammering.

Fatigue affects the capacity of muscles to generate forces and is associated with characteristic changes in EMG signals. It may also influence interjoint and intermuscular coordination. To understand better the global effects of fatigue on multijoint movement, we studied movement kinematics and EMG changes in healthy volunteers asked to hammer repetitively. Movement kinematics and the activity of 20 muscles of the arm, trunk, and leg were recorded before and after subjects became fatigued (as measured using a Borg scale). When fatigue was reached, maximal grip strength and elbow range of motio

A evidence-based approach to selecting post-exercise cryostimulation techniques for improving exercise performance and fatigue recovery: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

RATIONALE: Cryostimulation involves using water environments and low temperatures as intervention mediums, with main methods including CWI (cold water immersion), CWT (contrast water therapy), and WBC (whole-body cryostimulation). Previous systematic reviews focused on the effect of cryostimulation on muscle fatigue and sports performance. However, studies on the selection of different cryostimulation methods and their intervention effects present inconsistent results. INTRODUCTION: To systematically review and methodologically appraise the quality and effectiveness of existing intervention s…

Pseudogenes in Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma: First Pilot Observation.

STUDY DESIGN: Experimental laboratory study. OBJECTIVES: The primary purpose was to investigate the independent effects of current amplitude, pulse duration, and current frequency on muscle fatigue during neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES). A second purpose was to determine if the ratio of the evoked torque to the activated area could explain muscle fatigue. BACKGROUND: Parameters of NMES have been shown to differently affect the evoked torque and the activated area. The efficacy of NMES is limited by the rapid onset of muscle fatigue. METHODS AND MEASURES: Seven healthy participan…

Transient improvement induced by motor fatigue in focal occupational dystonia: the handgrip test.

Muscle fatigue induced by a previous sustained contraction temporarily decreases the motor output, transiently worsening motor performance. Whether muscle fatigue alters motor performance also in dystonia-a disorder whose main pathophysiological abnormality is motor overflow-remains unknown. To assess the effects of muscle fatigue in patients with focal occupational upper limb dystonia, we studied the effect of a previous maximum fatiguing voluntary contraction on motor performance in 10 musicians with focal occupational dystonia, in 3 musicians with hand motor impairment due to non-dystonic d…

TLR4 as receptor for HMGB1 induced muscle dysfunction in myositis.

OBJECTIVES: Polymyositis and dermatomyositis are characterised by muscle weakness and fatigue even in patients with normal muscle histology via unresolved pathogenic mechanisms. In this study, we investigated the mechanisms by which high mobility group box protein 1 (HMGB1) acts to accelerate muscle fatigue development. METHODS: Intact single fibres were dissociated from flexor digitorum brevis (FDB) of wild type, receptor for advanced glycation endproduct (RAGE) knockout and toll like receptor 4 (TLR4) knockout mice and cultured in the absence or presence of recombinant HMGB1. A decrease in …

Fatigue and the design of the respiratory system.

One source of muscle fatigue may be the failure to provide the required oxygen by any step in the oxygen transport cascade or a lack of the necessary machinery to utilize that oxygen. We favor abandoning the concept of a single rate-limiting step for the concept of tuned resistors, each contributing to the overall resistance to oxygen flow. However, because some of these steps have considerably less phenotypic plasticity than others, these are the component parts of the respiratory system that must be built with adequate "reserve" to accommodate adaptive increases in the other steps (Lindstedt…

Neuromotor variability partially explains different endurance capacities of expert pianists.

During fatiguing piano tasks, muscle fatigue develops differently between expert pianists. Differences in neuromotor strategies employed could explain a slower rate of fatigue development. The objective was to compare muscle activation and kinematic variabilities between ShortDuration (i.e., pianists with less endurance) and LongDuration groups. Results from 49 pianists showed that EMG activation variability of most shoulder and upper limbs muscles was greater for the ShortDuration group with time during two piano fatiguing tasks, namely Digital and Chord tasks. Segment acceleration variabilit…

Mechanomyography responses characterize altered muscle function during electrical stimulation-evoked cycling in individuals with spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Investigation of muscle fatigue during functional electrical stimulation (FES)-evoked exercise in individuals with spinal cord injury using dynamometry has limited capability to characterize the fatigue state of individual muscles. Mechanomyography has the potential to represent the state of muscle function at the muscle level. This study sought to investigate surface mechanomyographic responses evoked from quadriceps muscles during FES-cycling, and to quantify its changes between pre- and post-fatiguing conditions in individuals with spinal cord injury. METHODS: Six individuals w…

Evaluating the Training Effects of Two Swallowing Rehabilitation Therapies Using Surface Electromyography--Chin Tuck Against Resistance (CTAR) Exercise and the Shaker Exercise.

In this study, the efficacy of two dysphagia interventions, the Chin Tuck against Resistance (CTAR) and Shaker exercises, were evaluated based on two principles in exercise science-muscle-specificity and training intensity. Both exercises were developed to strengthen the suprahyoid muscles, whose contractions facilitate the opening of the upper esophageal sphincter, thereby improving bolus transfer. Thirty-nine healthy adults performed two trials of both exercises in counter-balanced order. Surface electromyography (sEMG) recordings were simultaneously collected from suprahyoid muscle group an

Upper body kinematic and muscular variability in response to targeted rotator cuff fatigue.

The rotator cuff muscles are prominent stabilizers of the shoulder and are vulnerable to muscle fatigue. Rotator cuff fatigue may result in subacromial impingement (SAI) through the superior translation of the humeral head. Scapular changes have been reported inconsistently, but may prevent SAI. The purpose of this study was to quantify changes in scapular kinematics, as well as muscle activity during glenohumeral motions following targeted rotator cuff fatigue. Ten healthy men completed four planar glenohumeral motions (cross-flexion, frontal, scapular, and sagittal plane elevation) prior to …

[Mitochondrial aspects of fatigue in sports].

National literature on fatigue in sports related to mitochondrial activity and possible drug and non-drug correction approaches over the past 5 years was reviewed. The significance of acidosis as a factor limiting muscle activity, energy production, adenosine triphosphate utilization, and activation of lipid peroxidation was shown. The results of ultrastructure studies in the modulation of gene expression related to the characteristics of tonic and phasic muscles and a histochemical method of assessing the types of these muscle fibers are presented. Options of overtraining prevention in sports

Fatigability of the external anal sphincter muscles using a novel strength training resistance exercise device.

Exercises involving pelvic floor muscles including repetitive voluntary contractions of external anal sphincter (EAS) musculature have been used to improve fecal incontinence. Muscle fatigue is a prerequisite for successful strength training. However, muscle fatigue induced by these exercises has not been systematically studied. We aimed to assess the fatigability of EAS muscles during various exercise methods. Twelve nulliparous (21 ± 2.7 yr) women were studied. We evaluated fatigue during 40 repetitive 3-s contractions and 30-s long squeeze contractions both with and without an intra-anal co…
