Myiasis is a subject of medical and veterinary importance particularly, in tropical and subtropical regions. In this paper, three cases of human urino-genital myiasis due to Piophila casei were identified and discussed.

The New World screwworm fly (Cochliomyia hominivorax) caused myiasis extensively among livestock in Mexico and the southern third of the USA until eradication was achieved by repeatedly releasing sterile males of the species on a massive scale. The pest appeared in Libya in 1988, the first time it had become established outside the western hemisphere. Because of the threat of myiasis in animals and people, not only in Libya but also elsewhere in Africa and beyond, a concerted campaign of sterile male releases was mounted with strong international support, and the outbreak has been eliminated. …

The imported tropical dermatoses include the various manifestations of dermal myiasis. Cases of the furuncular form of cutaneous myiasis are infrequently seen and occur much more seldom than creeping eruption. Nearly exclusively furuncular lesions appear after infestation with the larvae of Dermatobia hominis, the human botfly, in Central and South America and with the larvae of the tumbu-fly, Cordylobia anthropophaga, in tropical Africa. We had the opportunity to see a patient, who had acquired furuncular myiasis due to Dermatobia hominis in Bolivia and the emergence of his fully developed la…

INTRODUCTION: Human intestinal myiasis is an uncommon parasitic infection, usually related to the accidental ingestion of Eristalis tenax eggs.
METHODS: We report the case of a 47-year-old woman who presented with passage of motile larvae in stool. Diagnosis was established by macroscopic examination of the faecal sample.
RESULTS: Larvae compatible with E. tenax, a fly with worldwide distribution, were identified. Treatment with ivermectin was initiated, with favourable clinical outcome.
CONCLUSIONS: This case highlights the importance of food hygiene and the need to consider parasitologica…

Myiasis is a parasitic infection caused by dipteran larvae settling in living tissue and organs. Infestation is generally found in tropical and rural areas, where interaction with animals is common. It is diagnosed based on the evidence of the existence of dipteran larvae in tissues and organs. When planning the treatment, identifying the type of larvae is as important as identifying the infected organ or system. In this case report, we present the case of a female who had a biliary tract injury caused by laparoscopic cholecystectomy and who developed a postoperative enterocutaneous fistula an…

Human myiasis is a rare condition. It is more common in tropical regions. Umbilical cord myiasis has not previously been reported from a temperate climate, for example, New Jersey. We report a 9-day-old infant with umbilical cord myiasis. The maggots were identified by the entomologist as the larvae of Sarcophagidae, more commonly known as flesh flies.

An 80-year-old farmer, presented with large, maggot infested ulceration involving the medial part of the right upper lid. The left eye was phthisical. There was history of untreated traumatic laceration of the right upper lid. Mechanical removal of maggots was done under turpentine coverage with regular antibiotic dressing. Microbiological examination of maggots revealed the larvae to be of Lucilia sericata (green bottle fly). The ulceration completely healed in two weeks following manual removal of maggots and regular dressing. Orbital myiasis is an uncommon clinical condition, with isolated …

Myiasis is a rare disease primarily caused by infestation of tissue by larvae of houseflies. Oral myiasis is still more "rare" and "unique" owing to the fact that oral cavity rarely provides the necessary habitat conducive for a larval lifecycle. Here we report a case of extensive gingival myiasis, in an 81-year-old female patient, diagnosed and treated successfully in our department. The case is discussed in relation to its clinical presentation, etiopathogenesis, management, and prognosis.
