Structural and functional characteristics of faecal, vaginal and colostrum microbiota in high-yielding sows.

Recent studies have highlighted the critical roles of the microbiota in faeces, vagina and colostrum in reproductive success and piglet development. Understanding the structural and functional dynamics of these microbial communities is essential for optimizing the health and productivity of high-yielding (HY) sows. This study aimed to characterize the structural and functional features of these microbial communities in HY sows (litter size>10 piglets) vs. low-yielding (LY) sows (≤10 piglets) and to explore their associations with sow performance and piglet health. Fifteen Yorkshire sows from e

Immunological design of commensal communities to treat intestinal infection and inflammation.

The immunological impact of individual commensal species within the microbiota is poorly understood limiting the use of commensals to treat disease. Here, we systematically profile the immunological fingerprint of commensals from the major phyla in the human intestine (Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Proteobacteria) to reveal taxonomic patterns in immune activation and use this information to rationally design commensal communities to enhance antibacterial defenses and combat intestinal inflammation. We reveal that Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes have distinct effects on intestinal

Investigating the relationship between vaginal microbiota and host genetics and their impact on immune response and farrowing traits in commercial gilts.

Our objectives were to evaluate the interaction between host genetics and vaginal microbiota and their relationships with antibody (Ab) response to porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) vaccination and farrowing performance in commercial gilts. The farrowing performance traits were number born alive, number weaning (NW), total number born, number born dead, stillborn, mummies and preweaning mortality (PWM). The vaginal microbiota was collected on days 4 (D4) and 52 (D52) after vaccination for PRRSV. Blood samples were collected on D52 for Ab measurement. Actinobacteria, B

A consortium of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Streptococcus parasanguinis, and Filifactor alocis is present in sites prior to bone loss in a longitudinal study of localized aggressive periodontitis.

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans-induced localized aggressive periodontitis (LAP) in African-American adolescents has been documented but is poorly understood. Two thousand fifty-eight adolescents aged 11 to 17 years were screened for their periodontal status and the presence of A. actinomycetemcomitans in their oral cavity. Seventy-one A. actinomycetemcomitans-negative and 63 A. actinomycetemcomitans-positive periodontally healthy subjects were enrolled, sampled, examined, and radiographed yearly for 3 years. Gingival and periodontal pocket depth and attachment levels were recorded. Dise

Clinical and microbiological determinants of ailing dental implants.

BACKGROUND: The failure of the host tissue to establish or maintain osseointegration around dental implants is due to either occlusal or parafunctional forces, premature loading, ill-directed stress, or microbial infection. The long-term failure rate of dental implants is generally 5-10%. Although a variety of etiologies of early peri-implant bone loss (from implant placement to 1-year post-loading) have been proposed, factors associated with late implant failures are less well understood but are probably related to both the peri-implant microbial environment and host factors. Photodynamic therapy as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal treatment: a randomized, controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Recent preclinical and clinical data have suggested a potential benefit of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in the treatment of periodontitis. However, there are very limited data from controlled clinical trials evaluating the effect of PDT in the treatment of periodontitis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and microbiologic effects of the adjunctive use of PDT to non-surgical periodontal treatment. METHODS: Twenty-four subjects with chronic periodontitis were randomly treated with scaling and root planing followed by a single episode of PDT (test) or scaling and root

Comparative in-vitro activity of azithromycin, macrolides (erythromycin, clarithromycin and spiramycin) and streptogramin RP 59500 against oral organisms.

The in-vitro activities of azithromycin, clarithromycin, spiramycin and RP 59500 were compared with erythromycin against a wide range of oral organisms which have been implicated in oral infections and/or endocarditis (clindamycin was included for oral streptococci). All compounds tested showed good activity against many of these organisms, although some variation was observed with different species. Clarithromycin was the most active of the antibiotics tested against Gram-positive anaerobes, including Actinomyces spp., Propionibacterium spp., Lactobacillus spp. and Bifidobacterium dentium. Az

Navigating the Treatment Landscape of Odontogenic Sinusitis: Current Trends and Future Directions.

Background and Objectives: Odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) is a particular type of sinus infection induced by dental infections or iatrogenic causes. Although not rare, it is often underrated and sometimes confused with other forms of chronic rhinosinusitis. The aim of this review was to summarize the main diagnostic aspects, microbiological profile, and current options in the therapeutic management of ODS. Materials and Methods: Recent studies and consensus statements from both dental and ENT fields were reviewed. The focus was on the ODS diagnostic criteria, the types and the timing of dental an

Chloroquine Downregulation of Intestinal Autophagy Changed Intestinal Microbial Community Compositions and Metabolite Profiles in Piglets.

Our previous study demonstrated that moderate inhibition of intestinal autophagy was beneficial to alleviate early weaning stress in piglets, but the detailed mechanism behind this was unclear. Microbiota-mediated enterocyte autophagy helps maintain intestinal homeostasis. This study investigated the effects of inhibition or activation of autophagy in intestinal microbial community compositions and metabolite profiles in piglets. Eighteen 24-day-old weaned piglets were divided into three groups (each treatment of six piglets) and treated daily with rapamycin (RAPA), chloroquine (CQ) or a contr

Uncultivated bacteria as etiologic agents of intra-amniotic inflammation leading to preterm birth.

Intra-amniotic infection and inflammation are major causes of preterm birth (PTB). However, intra-amniotic inflammation is often detected in the absence of infection. This may partly be due to the culturing methods employed in hospital laboratories, which are unable to detect the uncultivated species. In this study, intra-amniotic microbial infections associated with PTB were examined by both culture and 16S rRNA-based culture-independent methods and were corroborated by the presence of intra-amniotic inflammation. Amniotic fluid (AF) specimens from 46 pregnancies complicated by PTB and 16 asy
