Heavy metal inputs to coastal Alaska ecosystems are driven by sediment loads from glacial meltwater and river outflows. This study characterized the spatial distribution of 16 major and trace metals in five strata in Kachemak Bay, as well as sediment total organic carbon content and grain size. Homer Harbor, a shallow harbor within the study area, contained elevated metal concentrations compared to the other strata. Soft-tissue defects of the distal third of the leg are common occurrences in trauma centers. The authors present the anatomic basis and their clinical experience using the flexor digitorum longus muscle flap. Ten cadaver specimens were dissected to evaluate the potential use of this flap for soft-tissue coverage in the lower third of the leg. The biomechanics of medialization laryngoplasty are not well understood. An excised canine larynx model was used to test the effects of various sized silicon implants.
