What Are Practical Surgical Anatomic Landmarks and Distances from Relevant Neurologic Landmarks in Cadavers for the Posterior Approach in Shoulder Arthroplasty?

BACKGROUND: Traditional total shoulder arthroplasty is performed through the deltopectoral approach and includes subscapularis release and repair. Subscapularis nonhealing or dysfunction may leave patients with persistent pain, impairment, and instability. Alternative approaches that spare the subscapularis include rotator interval and posterior shoulder approaches; however, to our knowledge, a cadaveric study describing pertinent surgical anatomy for a posterior shoulder approach regarding shoulder arthroplasty has not been performed. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What are the distances from impor

Direct anterior approach total hip arthroplasty with an orthopedic traction table.

OBJECTIVE: Direct anterior approach total hip arthroplasty (DAA THA) has gained significant popularity in the last decade as it is a muscle-sparing procedure. Modern techniques for DAA THA utilize both a standard operating table and an orthopedic traction table. As the use of an orthopedic traction table shows technical ease and predictability, this article will focus on the use of the orthopedic table or table extension to facilitate DAA THA. INDICATIONS: Primary or secondary arthritis requiring THA; revision surgery-both acetabular and femoral. CONTRAINDICATIONS: Posterior wall hardware re

A rare case of bilateral malignant glaucoma after cataract surgery with capsular tension ring implantation: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral malignant glaucoma induced by a capsular tension ring associated with ring-shaped cysts of the ciliary body post-cataract surgery is rare. Herein, we present a case to highlight the possibility of capsular tension ring-induced malignant glaucoma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old woman underwent phacoemulsification combined with capsular tension ring implantation for cataracts and zonular fibre laxity in both eyes. Upon admission, annular ciliary masses were detected in both eyes using ultrasound biomicroscopy. Two months post-surgery, the patient experienced vision deter

Large choroidal melanoma diagnosed after cataract surgery.

A dense cataract prevents detailed fundus examination which may lead to delayed diagnosis of undiscovered intraocular pathology before cataract surgery. We report two cases where large choroidal melanomas were diagnosed after cataract surgery and/or Nd:Yag laser capsulotomy. In the first case, a dense cataract prevented proper examination of the fundus of an 84-year-old female. A brownish choroidal lesion was seen after cataract surgery and diagnosed as postoperative choroidal detachment. As this lesion persisted over months, the patient was sent to our hospital for evaluation where a diagnosi

Management of ACL elongation in the surgical treatment of congenital knee dislocation.

Congenital knee dislocation is a rare anomaly associated with a variety of neuromuscular diseases and deformities. The etiology of this condition remains unclear, but it is usually associated with a variety of disorders, such as Larsen's syndrome, arthrogryposis, spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Down syndrome, and Streeter's dysplasia. It is rarely an isolated entity, and 60% of patients with congenital knee dislocation had additional congenital anomalies, most commonly hip dysplasia. The ideal method of treatment is debated. No current treatment algorithms address anterio

[Spontaneous dislocation of intraocular lens with capsule as a late complication of cataract surgery in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome --five case reports].

PURPOSE: Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) is associated with zonular weakness and a higher frequency of intraoperative complications during cataract surgery, including rupture of the posterior lens capsule, zonular dialysis and a rise of intraocular pressure occurring postoperatively. Delayed dislocation of an IOL is a rarely reported phenomenon. PATIENTS: Within one year, late dislocation of the lens capsule with the in the bag fixated IOL was observed following cataract surgery in five patients (67, 74, 79, 90 and 92 years old) with pseudoexfoliation syndrome. RESULTS: All patients had an

All-arthroscopic anatomic repair of an avulsed popliteus tendon in a multiple ligament-injured knee.

Multiple ligament-injured knees are a heterogeneous group of knee injuries that lack a clear consensus on optimal treatment. Current areas of controversy include optimal timing of surgery, ligamentous repair vs reconstruction, and combined vs staged procedures. In addition, multiple open, arthroscopic, and arthroscopic-assisted techniques exist for repair and reconstruction of the injured stabilizers of the knee. Many open posterolateral corner reconstruction techniques have been described, and this article represents the first description of an arthroscopic technique for repair of an avulsed p
