Animals are much better at running than robots. The difference in performance arises in the important dimensions of agility, range, and robustness. To understand the underlying causes for this performance gap, we compare natural and artificial technologies in the five subsystems critical for running: power, frame, actuation, sensing, and control. With few exceptions, engineering technologies meet or exceed the performance of their biological counterparts. We conclude that biology's advantage over engineering arises from better integration of subsystems, and we identify four fundamental obstacl

Classical surgery, also called analog surgery, is transmitted to us by our mentors, whose knowledge has been delegated from generation to generation throughout the history of surgery. Its main limitations are limited surgical precision and dependence on the surgeon's skill to achieve surgical goals. So-called digital surgery incorporates the most advanced technology, with the aim of improving the results of all phases of the surgical process. Robotic platforms are currently considered to be one of the main drivers of the digital transformation of surgery. They bring considerable advances to th

BACKGROUND: As the use of the robotic platform increases among general surgeons, the amount of robotic cholecystectomies is expected to increase as well. The use of intraoperative cholangiography is valuable in assessing for choledocholithiasis. We describe our technique of performing robotic intraoperative cholangiograms with choledochoscopy. Out technique aids in efficiency since no undocking is required.
METHODS: Preoperatively, the decision to perform a cholangiogram is made based on physical exam, labs, and imaging findings. The procedure begins with obtaining a critical view of safety.

Lipomas are one of the most common benign tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, typically found in the small and large intestine. While most cases are asymptomatic and discovered incidentally, large duodenal lipomas are rare and present a unique set of diagnostic and management challenges due to their complex anatomic relationships with other vital structures. Endoscopic removal of large lipomas carries a risk of bleeding and can be difficult to access. To address these issues, robotic-assisted surgical approaches have been proposed as a viable alternative to laparoscopy, as demonstrated in th

Pulmonary nodules (lesions <3 cm in size) are commonly identified on computed tomographic scans, but radiographic features alone are inadequate to reliably differentiate between benign and malignant etiologies. Therefore, tissue biopsy remains the standard approach to determine the appropriate treatment course for many patients with pulmonary nodules. Although percutaneous biopsy is highly accurate, it poses substantial risks of procedural complications, including pneumothorax and bleeding. Robotic bronchoscopy has recently been developed to overcome many of the limitations of previous navigat

BACKGROUND: Millions of people are affected yearly by "runner's knee" and osteoarthritis, which is thought to be related to impact force. Millions are also affected by chronic falling, who are usually both difficult to identify and train. While at first glance, these topics seem to be entirely disconnected, there appears to be a need for a device that would address both issues. This paper proposes and investigates the use of the Variable Stiffness Treadmill (VST) as a targeted training device for the different populations described above.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The VST is the authors' unique

Augmentation cystoplasty (AC) is a well-established surgical option for the management of overactive bladder where conservative management has failed. We describe the case of a man in his 50s with chronic bladder dysfunction secondary to refractory detrusor overactivity and small capacity bladder. His lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) of urinary frequency and nocturia persisted despite pharmacological therapy and peripheral neural modulation; hence, he underwent surgical intervention for management of his bladder dysfunction. A robot-assisted clamshell enterocystoplasty was performed with a

Key factors for successful total knee arthroplasty include accurate implant positioning with precise tibial and femoral resection, combined with appropriate soft tissue balancing to achieve the desired alignment. Robotic-assisted total knee arthroplasty allows surgeons to execute pre-planned strategies with precision, with growing evidence suggesting that robotic-assisted-total knee arthroplasty reduces radiological outliers. This has yet to be proven to translate into long-term improvements in patient-reported outcomes and implant survivorship. Robotic-assisted-total knee arthroplasty systems

Background: Since the transition of surgical robot systems into the medical field, physicians have had to develop new dexterity skills. The ideal learning environment for robotic surgery has yet to be discovered. Virtual reality (VR) simulation is a possible safe and economic method. In VR simulator training human feedback is hardly used, and an alternative may be found in video revision. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether adding video review to VR simulation-based training in novice physicians improves their ability to complete a complex robot task. In addition, the secondary

Magnetically actuated endoscopes are currently transitioning in to clinical use for procedures such as colonoscopy, presenting numerous benefits over their conventional counterparts. Intelligent and easy-to-use control strategies are an essential part of their clinical effectiveness due to the un-intuitive nature of magnetic field interaction. However, work on developing intelligent control for these devices has mainly been focused on general purpose endoscope navigation. In this work, we investigate the use of autonomous robotic control for magnetic colonoscope intervention via biopsy, anothe

Biliary tract cancer consists of cholangiocarcinoma (CC) and gallbladder cancer (GBC). When resectable, surgery provides the best chance at long-term survival. Unfortunately, surgery for these tumors is associated with long operative times, high morbidities, and prolonged hospital stays. Minimally invasive surgery has been shown to impact selected outcomes, including length of stay, in other diseases, and robotic surgery may offer additional advantages compared to laparoscopic surgery in treating bile duct cancers. This is a systematic review of robotic surgery for biliary tract cancer. Predet

Lymphedema is a medical condition that results in swelling and discomfort in human arms or legs. Caused due to the build-up of lymph fluid in the tissues under the skin, lymphedema commonly affects one of the arms or legs and it is an incurable condition that requires treatment for control. A common treatment is manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), a massage therapy to remove the excess lymphatic fluid out of the tissues back into the lymphatic vessels. This paper proposes a portable and mobile device, lymphatic drainage robot (LDR), as an alternative to MLD. The prototype LDR, a combination of so

The introduction of robotically assisted surgery was a milestone for minimally invasive surgery in the 21st century. Currently, there are two CE-approved robotically assisted surgery systems for use and development in pediatrics. Specifically, tremor filtration and optimal visualization are approaches which can have enormous benefits for procedures in small bodies. Robotically assisted surgery in children might have advantages compared to laparoscopic or open approaches. This review focuses on the research literature regarding robotically assisted surgery that has been published within the pas
