Effects of premeal chewing on ruminative behavior.

The role of oropharyngeal stimulation (in the form of chewing) on the frequency of ruminating by institutionalized mentally retarded persons was examined. Chewing before meals reduced the rate of postmeal ruminating. Several procedures that might produce clinically significant decreases in ruminating were suggested.

Parturient paresis and hypocalcemia in ruminant livestock.

Parturient paresis (hypocalcemia) is most likely to affect dairy cattle around the time of parturition. It causes progressive neuromuscular … ction as dairy cattle, nonparturient hypocalcemia makes up a higher proportion of cases in nondairy ruminants. Clinical signs of hypocalcemia in beef cattle, sheep, and goats tend toward hyperesthesia and tetany rather than the classic flaccid paralysis that occurs in dairy cattle with parturient hypocalcemia. Prompt and effective treatment of hypocalcemia …

[Control of ingestive behavior and rumination by neuropeptides].

In sheep as in other species, intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of picomolar doses of several peptide hormones affects food intak … n satiated sheep and are supposed to be active in the short-term regulation of food intake in these ruminants. In contrast both calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF) increase the daily food intake, when ICV injected, but their centrally mediated orexigenic effects depend on the regimen and the digestive status. The …

Can hypoglycaemia cause obsessions and ruminations?

Two cases of obsessional ruminations apparently secondary to functional hypoglycaemia are described. Both patients are young Caucasian males with obsessional histories at the start of dietary treatment of 18 and 6 years, respectively. In both cases, reactive hypoglycaemia was confirmed by glucose tolerance test. The first case made a complete recovery on dietary treatment which has lasted over two years; previous treatment with drugs, behaviour therapy, and counselling were unsuccessful The response of the second case has been less outstanding due to poor compliance, but improvement and worsen

Dietary treatment of chronic obsessional ruminations.

Chronic obsessional ruminations may prove resistant to psychological treatment because they are not psychological in nature but epiphenomena of brain dysfunction secondary to nutritional factors. The case is described of a chronic, treatment-resistant ruminator who made a dramatic and lasting recovery when a high protein breakfast was added to his elimination diet regimen, undertaken when years of psychological and pharmacological treatment had failed. Biochemical and clinical evidence supports the hypothesis that hypoglycaemia secondary to inappropriate diet was the cause of his disorder. Die

The relation of food quantity to rumination behavior.

Preliminary work suggested that the quantity of food ingested by retarded individuals who usually ruminated following meals was related to the frequency and duration of ruminating responses. This possible relation was experimentally examined by systematically varying food quantity from regular portions to satiation levels for three retarded individuals who exhibited high levels of ruminating. A clear functional relation of food quantity to ruminating emerged, with satiation procedures producing rapid and large decreases in the relatively high frequencies and durations of ruminating characteris

Rumination in a 7-year-old child.

Regurgitation of food by rumination has rarely been reported in latency-age children. A 7-year-old boy had symptoms of rumination, gagging, bruxism, and enuresis. During the oppositional stage of development many unresolved conflicts had developed between the patient and his parents. Short-term psychotherapy which focused on resolution of the power struggles produced rapid remission of the symptoms. A two-year follow-up showed no recurrence of difficulty.
