Unplanned readmission after ocular trauma ambulatory surgery: A retrospective study of the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center.

PURPOSE: Ambulatory surgery (AS) has become common in recent years. This study explored the causes of unplanned readmission after AS and the trends in the rate of unplanned readmission in the Ocular Trauma Department of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center. METHODS: We collected information on patients who underwent AS from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2017, summarized the causes of ambulatory hospitalization, and analysed the type of initial surgical procedure and the reasons for 31-day unplanned readmission. The Ocular Trauma Department started to perform AS in around mid-2015, and we collected inf

A dual-method approach to identifying intimate partner violence within a Level 1 trauma center.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious public health problem leading many health care organizations to recommend universal screening as part of standard health care practice. Prior work shows that most IPV victims and perpetrators are unidentified by health care staff. We sought to enhance the capacity of an urban trauma center to identify IPV using a dual-method screening tool, and to establish prevalence of IPV victimization and perpetration among this population. METHODS: Patients aged 18 and older were recruited from a Level 1 trauma center from May 2015 to July 2017. Pa

Motorcycle helmets and cervical spine injuries: a 5-year experience at a Level 1 trauma center.

OBJECTIVE Motorcycle helmets have been shown to decrease the incidence and severity of traumatic brain injury due to motorcycle crashes. Despite this proven efficacy, some previous reports and speculation suggest that helmet use is associated with a higher likelihood of cervical spine injury (CSI). In this study, the authors examine 1061 cases of motorcycle crash victims who were treated during a 5-year period at a Level 1 trauma center to investigate the association of helmet use with the incidence and severity of CSI. The authors hypothesized that wearing a motorcycle helmet during a motorcy

Prehospital blood transfusions in pediatric trauma and nontrauma patients: a single-center review of safety and outcomes.

PURPOSE: Prehospital transfusions are a novel yet increasingly accepted intervention in the adult population as part of remote damage control resuscitation, but prehospital transfusions remain controversial in children. Our purpose was to review our pediatric prehospital transfusion experience over 12 years to describe the safety of prehospital transfusion in appropriately triaged trauma and nontrauma patients. METHODS: Children (<18 years) transfused with packed red blood cells (pRBC) or plasma during transport to a single regional academic medical center between 2002 and 2014 were identifie

Imaging of penetrating injuries of the head and neck:current practice at a level I trauma center in the United States.

Penetrating neck injuries are commonly related to stab wounds and gunshot wounds in the United States. The injuries are classified by penetration site in terms of the three anatomical zones of the neck. Based on this zonal classification system, penetrating injuries to the head and neck have traditionally been evaluated by conventional angiography and/or surgical exploration. In recent years, multidetector-row computed tomography (CT) angiography has significantly improved detectability of vascular injuries and extravascular injuries in the setting of penetrating injuries. CT angiography is a

Impact of airbags on a Level I trauma center: injury patterns, infectious morbidity, and hospital costs.

BACKGROUND: To date, no study has evaluated the potential impact of supplemental restraint use on resource use at a Level I trauma center. We hypothesized that airbag use would be related to decreased injury severity of motor vehicle collision survivors admitted to a Level I trauma center, leading to a decrease in infectious morbidity and hospital resource use. STUDY DESIGN: Using the trauma registry, motor vehicle collision victims admitted during an 11-year period were identified. Restraint groups were defined as unrestrained (reference group), seatbelt only, airbag only, or airbag and seat

Legal prosecution of alcohol-impaired drivers admitted to a level I trauma center in Rhode Island.

BACKGROUND: Despite harsh legislation, driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) is exceedingly common, and alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) account for significant morbidity, mortality, and economic loss. Legal sanctions can keep offenders off the road (protecting other drivers and pedestrians) and ensure compliance with treatment programs (reducing recidivism). However, even with clear evidence of a transgression, the law seems to be inconsistently enforced among trauma patients. The purpose of this study was to measure the rate of legal prosecution among impaired drivers admi

Popliteal arterial traumas: prognosis factors: multi-center prospective study apropos of 40 cases.

Forty cases of arterial popliteal traumas occurring in the course of 1992 were collected by 20 centers. The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate a preoperative prognosis score suggested by Crolais from a retrospective study. Five clinical criteria are taken in account to establish the score: delay, degree of ischemia, contusion, general condition of the patient and wound apperture. Each of the criteria is affected by a progressive note according to the gravity. Analysis of our series confirms the seriousness of this pathology: one death, 8 major amputations and 50% of morbidity. T
