Virulence gene regulation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa is mediated by a novel hinge motion in the signaling helix of GacS histidine kinase.

Sensor kinases (SKs) play central roles in bacterial adaptation to environmental challenges. Signal perception by these membrane-embedded enzymes initiates phosphotransfer cascades that regulate gene expression through cognate transcription factors. Although SKs were thought to function independently, interwoven multi-kinase networks have revealed a more complex picture. The present study focuses on GacS, a major regulator of virulence gene expression in the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation revealed a novel hinge motion within the GacS S-helix r…

Influence of kinematic motion and instrumentation strategy on apical debris extrusion during root canal preparation: An in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Endodontic treatment aims to eliminate infection while maintaining the health of the tooth and surrounding tissues. Apical extrusion of debris during instrumentation is unavoidable and may lead to inflammation, postoperative pain, or delayed healing. The extent and direction of extrusion are influenced by the instrumentation system and motion pattern. AIMS: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of kinematic motion (continuous rotary vs. reciprocating) on apical debris extrusion during mechanical root canal preparation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty freshly extracted human singl…

Effects of silencing tuberomammillary nucleus histidine decarboxylase-lineage neurons on behavioral responses in a mouse model of motion sickness.

This study investigated the effects of manipulating tuberomammillary nucleus (TMN) histidine decarboxylase (HDC)-lineage neurons, which constitute the major source of central histaminergic neurons, on motion sickness-like behaviors in mice. Using a transgenic mouse line and a cyclic rotational stimulation paradigm, we found that rotational stimulation significantly upregulated Fos expression in the TMN. Silencing of TMN HDC-lineage neurons did not affect conditioned flavor avoidance but significantly reduced retching-like episodes following rotational stimulation. However, mice with TMN HDC-li…

Motion-preserving direct osteosynthesis for a C2 complex fracture involving the vertebral body and posterior elements: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of C2 fractures often involves fixation across C1-2, which restricts atlantoaxial motion. Because the C1-2 segment plays a major role in cervical mobility, motion-preserving strategies may be desirable in selected cases. We report a case of a complex C2 fracture treated with navigation-assisted motion-preserving fixation. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 54-year-old man sustained multiple injuries in a motor vehicle collision, including a C2 fracture involving the vertebral body and posterior elements. He presented with neck pain but no neurological deficits. Computed tomogr…

Inferring Fine Finger Motions for Prosthetic Control: An Ultrasound-Based Approach to Real-Time Estimation of Finger Kinematics.

A central challenge in building robotic prostheses is the creation of a sensor-based system able to read physiological signals from the lower limb and instruct a robotic hand to perform various tasks. Existing systems typically perform discrete gestures such as pointing or grasping, by employing electromyography (EMG) or ultrasound (U.S.) technologies to analyze muscle states. While detecting finger activation has been done in the past, we are interested in detection, or inference, done in the context of fine motions that evolve over time. Examples include motions occurring when performing fin…

New insights and a computational model for understanding induced motion revealed through novel variants of the Flying Bluebottle Illusion.

The Flying Bluebottle Illusion is a compelling example of how the perceived trajectory of moving objects can be greatly influenced by other motion sources in the visual scene. In this article, we present a series of simplified variants of the Flying Bluebottle Illusion in which the true motion of a target is a circular orbit around a central point. However, when a similar but offset orbiting motion trajectory is added to a set of surrounding inducers, the perceived trajectory of the target is drastically altered in both extent and direction. In other words, the perceived orbiting motion of the…

The Role of Posterior Tibial Slope in Range of Motion After Total Knee Arthroplasty for Haemophilia Patients: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with haemophilia typically achieve only approximately a 90° range of motion (ROM) following total knee arthroplasty (TKA), which still significantly affects their daily life. AIM: Studies have indicated that the posterior tibial slope (PTS) and posterior condylar offset (PCO) are associated with ROM following TKA. However, it remains unclear whether these findings are applicable to patients with haemophilia, given their distinct skeletal anatomy compared to the general population. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on 56 patients (71 knees) who underwent TKA…

KINEMATIC CONVEX COMBINATIONS OF MULTIPLE POSES OF A BOUNDED PLANAR OBJECT BASED ON AN AVERAGE-DISTANCE MINIMIZING MOTION SWEEP.

Convex combination of points is a fundamental operation in computational geometry. By considering rigid-body displacements as points in the … paper, we present a new formulation for kinematic convexity based on an average-distance minimizing motion sweep of a bounded planar object. The resulting 1-DOF motion sweep between two planar poses is represented as a convex combination in the configuration space defined by ( x , y , z ) where ( x , y ) is associated with the location of the centroid of …

Using a wearable system combining inertial and force sensing for simultaneous detection of limb motion and grasping actions in the workplace.

Using wearable sensors to evaluate workers' performance is challenging with existing sensor techniques. It requires detecting not only limb motions but also the onset and offset of specific actions. Commonly used inertial measurement units (IMUs) can be combined with surface electromyography (sEMG) to detect muscular activity. However, sEMG requires skin preparation and careful sensor placement, and can be affected by sweat or motion artifacts. To address these limitations, we used a wearable system combining IMUs and force-sensing resistors (FSRs), where IMUs capture joint kinematics and FSRs…
