Advanced Strategies for Enhancing the Biocompatibility and Antibacterial Properties of Implantable Structures.

This review explores the latest advancements in enhancing the biocompatibility and antibacterial properties of implantable structures, with a focus on titanium (Ti) and its alloys. Titanium implants, widely used in dental and orthopedic applications, demonstrate excellent mechanical strength and biocompatibility, yet face challenges such as peri-implantitis, a bacterial infection that can lead to implant failure. To address these issues, both passive and active surface modification strategies have been developed. Passive modifications, such as altering surface texture and chemistry, aim to pre

Cu(II)-chelated ovalbumin mimicking the active centre of superoxide dismutase: Structure, antioxidant and antibacterial properties for food preservation application.

Enzymatic browning and microbial contamination of food threaten food sensory and safety. With the development of green and healthy concepts, there is a greater need for efficient, low-carbon antioxidant and antimicrobial strategies. In this study, we designed a nano-enzyme with antioxidant activities and biocompatibility. By mimicking the active center of the natural SOD enzyme, copper (Cu) and ovalbumin (OVA) were self-assembled to form Cu-nano-polymerised sheet (Cu-NPS), in which OVA as a scaffold carries cofactors to create the active sites, making the nanoenzymes compatible with the antiox

Sodium alginate passivated CuInS2/ZnS QDs encapsulated in the mesoporous channels of amine modified SBA 15 with excellent photostability and biocompatibility.

We herein report the synthesis of CuInS2/ZnS (CIS/ZnS) quantum dots (QDs) via a greener method followed by sodium alginate (SA) passivation and encapsulation into mesoporous channels of amine modified silica (SBA15-NH2) for improved photostability and biocompatibility. The as-synthesized CIS/ZnS QDs exhibited near infrared emission even after SA passivation and silica encapsulation. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Small angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed the mesoporous nature of the SBA-15 remained stable after loading with the SA-CIS/ZnS QDs. The effective encapsulation of SA-C

Introduction of a high-throughput double-stent animal model for the evaluation of biodegradable vascular stents.

Current stent system efficacy for the treatment of coronary artery disease is hampered by in-stent restenosis (ISR) rates of up to 20% in certain high-risk settings and by the risk of stent thrombosis, which is characterized by a high mortality rate. In theory, biodegradable vascular devices exhibit crucial advantages. Most absorbable implant materials are based on poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) owing to its mechanical properties; however, PLLA might induce an inflammatory reaction in the vessel wall. Evaluation of biodegradable implant efficacy includes a long-term examination of tissue response;

Fish Scale-derived Chitooligosaccharide and Chitosan Hydrogels as Functional Biomaterials for Wound Healing.

Chronic and poorly healing wounds require dressings that do more than provide coverage, but actively regulate infection, oxidative stress, and tissue repair. In this study, hydrogels formulated from fish-scale-derived low-molecular-weight chitosan and chitooligosaccharide (COS) were evaluated using integrated antimicrobial, antioxidant, and in vivo wound-healing analyses to assess their comparative therapeutic performance. Antimicrobial testing against Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis and Micrococcus luteus) and Gram-negative bacteria (Aeromonas hydrophila and Klebsiella pneumoniae) s

Biocompatible Gelatinized Starch as a Functional Modulator to Expand the Scope of Injectable Hydrogels.

Injectable hydrogels used in tissue engineering and minimally invasive therapies are limited by insufficient biocompatibility, poor scalability, high costs, and inconsistent performance. Here, we introduce gelatinized starch, a common polysaccharide, as a versatile and economical building block to expand the existing repertoire of injectable hydrogel materials. Derived from native corn starch via heating and gelatinization, this biopolymer exhibits shear-thinning, thixotropic, and thermoreversible sol-gel transition properties, key rheological characteristics essential for syringeability and i

Containerless fabrication of homogeneous-structure biomaterials with osteogenic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Current challenges in biomaterials center on a fundamental conflict between bioactivity and physiological homeostasis in material design. Inorganic biomaterials such as bioceramics and bioglasses exemplify this dilemma, as the release of functional ions is often accompanied by excessive alkalinization that limits practical use. We prepared a homogeneous lithium-calcium-silicate bioactive glass (LCS-CP) through containerless processing technique. LCS-CP maintained a mild alkaline microenvironment (pH < 8.0 in cell culture; < 9.2 in Tris-HCl over 50 days) and released substantially lower amounts

Nanostructured hyaluronic acid-chia mucilage film as bioactive wound dressings for accelerated skin regeneration.

Scar formation after skin injury remains a major clinical challenge because most conventional wound dressings promote closure rather than tissue regeneration, often resulting in fibrosis. Although several biomaterials, such as collagen, chitosan, alginate, gelatin, and zein, have been explored to improve healing outcomes, the attainment of truly scar-free regeneration remains a significant challenge. In this study, we developed a bioactive nanocomposite wound dressing by incorporating hyaluronic acid nanoparticles (HANs) into a natural mucilage matrix extracted from chia seeds. The HANs were s

Preparation and application of modified peach gum polysaccharide in the repair of central nervous system injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is an irreversible neurological injury that leads to severe motor dysfunction and neurological deficiencies, imposing a large social load. Due to the difficulty of the SCI procedure, the prognosis is normally bad. In recent years, naturally derived hydrogels have garnered increasing attention. Peach gum (PG) primarily consists of macromolecular polysaccharides with abundant hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on its branched chains, making it amenable to modification. This study is the first to prepare carboxymethylated peach gum polysaccharide (CPG) using PG as the raw mater

A triphenylamine-boronic-acid-based theragnostic biomaterial for diabetes with concurrent fluorescence sensing of glucose and microviscosity.

Blood glucose and viscosity are two pivotal biomarkers associated with the chronic metabolic disorder, diabetes mellitus. Despite successful attempts at continuous monitoring of glucose, dual sensing of glucose and microviscosity with significant precision remains unexplored. To fill in this knowledge gap, a series of triphenylamine-boronic-acid-based fluorescence sensors were designed in this study. The triphenylamine-boronic acid derivatives (TPA-p-TBA, TPA-m-TBA, and TPA-o-TBA) were fabricated following the typical donor-π-acceptor arrangement, with triphenylamine as the electron-donating g

Nano-bio interfacial effects modulating protein adsorption in dialdehyde lentinan-Crosslinked polysaccharide sponges reinforced with zein nanoflowers.

The interfacial organization of porous biomaterials critically influences protein adsorption and subsequent cell-material interactions at hydrated biointerfaces relevant to wound-contacting environments. Herein, hybrid sponges were developed by rationally assembling chitosan, lentinan, levan, and fucoidan into a covalently defined macromolecular network featuring nano-bio interfacial effects. The materials were designed to modulate interfacial biological performance via engineered pore-wall structures, with protein-layer formation at sponge interfaces associated with downstream cell-material r

SAHA-coupled biocompatible cellulose-based nanoparticles as HDAC-inhibitory drug delivery systems with slow and sustained release behavior.

Nanoparticles (NPs) are being increasingly investigated as drug delivery systems to overcome common challenges in drug therapy, such as rapid drug metabolism and short serum half-life. In this study, a facile method was applied to combine the incorporation of a physiologically cleavable linkage with the introduction of a strained alkyne enabling efficient attachment of SAHA, a histone deacetylase inhibitor, to various structures. SAHA was chemically attached to a cellulose backbone hydrophobized by valproate groups, allowing the formulation of NPs by the emulsion-evaporation technique, resulti

Cell-laden 3D bioprinted hydrogels for wound healing: cellular mechanism, bioprinting determinants and translational perspectives.

Cell-laden three-dimensional (3D) bioprinted hydrogels have emerged as a promising technique for enhanced wound healing by integrating biomaterials, living cells, and precise fabrication technology. Chronic wounds that persist for an extended period of time, especially when pathologically affected by diseases like diabetes, can pose a serious threat to patients' health. Conventional dressing materials typically fail to provide adequate mechanical strength, drug release control, and complete tissue regeneration. In contrast, 3D bioprinting can allow for the selective deposition of cells into th

Bioactive powder adhesive featuring clotting synergy for alveolar extraction socket hemostasis and regeneration.

Wound healing involves a cascade of four overlapping phases-hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling-that demand temporally coordinated intervention. However, most current hemostatic materials merely target the initial hemostatic stage and frequently impair physiological blood clotting, an essential endogenous platform for subsequent tissue regeneration. Herein, we report a novel powder hemostatic material that synergizes with endogenous clotting to orchestrate a continuous hemostasis-to-regeneration cascade. The powder consists of a lipoic acid-sodium lipoate copolymer (PolyLA-
