OBJECTIVE: To determine if minimally invasive posterior interbody fusion with cortical bone trajectory (CBT) is associated with reduced paraspinal muscle damage compared to conventional open posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF).
METHODS: Sixteen consecutive patients who underwent CBT were grouped into matched pairs with 16 patients who underwent conventional PLIF between May 2013 and January 2014, in terms of age, sex, body mass index, and spinal levels. Perioperative data and clinical data, including the Japanese Orthopedics Association (JOA) score, visual analogue scale (VAS) score, Osw

BACKGROUND: Juvenile muscular atrophy of the distal upper extremity (Hirayama disease) is characterised by anterior horn cell loss in the lower cervical cord, presumably caused by anterior displacement of the dural sac during neck flexion. A recent report suggests that atopy and IgE may contribute to anterior horn damage.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether IgE is a contributing factor in Hirayama disease.
METHODS: Serum total IgE and allergen specific IgE were examined in 20 consecutive patients, and their correlations with clinical profiles investigated.
RESULTS: Past or present history of

A case of hypervitaminosis A with secondary entrapment and compression of the left brachial plexus nerve roots is described. A 9-year-old male castrated domestic shorthair, fed a home-made diet based on raw pork liver, was submitted for examination for a left forelimb lameness that evolved to paralysis over a 2-month period. Clinical examination revealed a flaccid paralysis and atrophy of all left forelimb muscles. An ipsilateral Horner's syndrome was also noted. Radiological examination of the cervical and thoracic spine showed massive new bone formation at the ventral aspect of the second ce

We made an animal model of cervical spinal cord injury in a cat and performed electrophysiological, histological, and bechavioral studies. The cervical spinal cord injury model was made by inserting a screw through the fourth cervical vertebral body of the cat. After the injury, muscle tonus of the limbs and trunk diminished. The cat was able to walk and to perform target reaching after the injury, although the trunk was unstable and the movement of the forelimb was ataxic. Atrophy of the back muscle remained. The cat was unable to stand bipedally. These behavioral disturbances suggested dysfu

Significant progress has been made in the identification of genes and chromosomal loci associated with several types of motor neuron disease. Of particular interest is recent work on the pathogenic mechanisms underlying these diseases, especially studies in in vitro model systems and in transgenic and gene-targeted mice.

A proband with a clinical picture indistinguishable from SMA type I is described. The parents are second cousins. On DNA analysis it appeared that the proband and his healthy 2 year old sib had inherited the same haplotypes for DNA markers flanking the SMA locus on 5q. This supports non-linkage of SMA to chromosome 5q in this family. The consanguinity of the parents raises the possibility of a second locus for autosomal recessive SMA type I outside the 5q12-13 region. This may have implications for genetic counselling after prenatal diagnosis in consanguineous families. Furthermore, this case

Fasciculation potentials were quantitated during wakefulness (W) and the different sleep stages in 10 patients affected by motor neuron disease. Compared to W, no statistically significant variation was present in fasciculations during any sleep stage. Fasciculations remain unaffected by the decrease in central nervous system excitability which occurs during sleep.

Ten autosomal recessive/sporadic cases of hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type I (HMSN I), nine of which originated from the northern part of Sweden, were included in the study. Parents were free from neurologic symptoms. Motor and sensory conduction velocity was normal when recorded, i.e., in 19 and 17 parents, respectively. Sural nerve biopsies from the ten cases revealed a varying degree of onion bulb formation. In eight of the cases the onion bulbs consisted of abundant basement membranes, whereas the Schwann cells were few and sometimes lacking. There were in some cases considerab

After severe dietary calcium-magnesium deficiency in rats, succinic dehydrogenase and acetylcholinesterase enzyme activity of gastrocnemius muscle showed a neurogenic atrophy. This alteration was associated with a high concentration of calcium in the spinal cord.

BACKGROUND: Genomic Newborn Screening (gNBS) could transform neonatal healthcare by enabling early detection of genetic disorders, timely intervention, and improved health outcomes. This study assessed healthcare professionals' self-reported knowledge, attitudes, and challenges regarding expanded newborn genomic screening in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), and identified factors influencing its integration into neonatal healthcare.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was distributed to healthcare professionals across public and private facilities in Abu Dhabi, using random and snowball s

The aim of the study was to identify daytime predictors of nocturnal gas exchange anomalies in children with neuromuscular disease (NMD) and normal daytime gas exchange. Lung function tests, respiratory muscle evaluation and nocturnal gas exchange were obtained as part of routine evaluation. We included 52 consecutive children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (n = 20), spinal muscular atrophy (n = 10) and other NMD (n = 22). 20 patients had nocturnal hypoxaemia, defined as minimal arterial oxygen saturation measured by pulse oximetry (S(p,O(2))) <90% for ≥ 2% of night time, and 22 had nocturna

RNA therapeutics represent a disruptive technology that has transformed drug discovery and manufacturing, gaining significant prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic. RNA therapeutics encompass diverse molecules like antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs), small interfering RNAs (siRNAs), microRNAs (miRNAs), RNA aptamers, and messenger RNAs (mRNAs), which can function through different mechanisms. RNA therapeutics are increasingly used to treat various diseases, including neurological disorders. For example, ASO therapies such as nusinersen for spinal muscular atrophy and eteplirsen for Duchenne mu

BACKGROUND: Health plan policies managing neuromuscular disease (NMD) therapies may impose burdensome requirements on patients and providers. While prior research has explored payer restrictions for rare NMD treatments, limited evidence exists on policies specifically governing therapy initiation and reauthorization.
OBJECTIVES: To examine initial and reauthorization coverage policies for therapies targeting five NMDs-Duchenne muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy, generalized myasthenia gravis, and Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome-across all U.S. state M
