High-frequency ultrasound detects biomechanical weakening in keratoconus with lower stiffness at higher grade.

In vivo biomechanical characterization of the cornea remains a challenge. We have developed a high-frequency ultrasound elastography method, the ocular pulse elastography (OPE), to measure corneal axial displacement (CAD) induced by the ocular pulse. Here we compared CAD and a stiffness index derived from CAD between keratoconus patients and normal controls. We also explored the trend of these parameters with keratoconus grade. Twenty normal subjects and twenty keratoconus patients were recruited in this study. Corneal topography, tomography, intraocular pressure (IOP) and ocular pulse amplitu

Impact of Loading and Myocardial Mechanical Properties on Natural Shear Waves: Comparison to Pressure-Volume Loops.

BACKGROUND: Shear wave elastography (SWE) has been proposed as a novel noninvasive method for the assessment of myocardial stiffness, a relevant determinant of diastolic function. It is based on tracking the propagation of shear waves, induced, for instance, by mitral valve closure (MVC), in the myocardium. The speed of propagation is directly related to myocardial stiffness, which is defined by the local slope of the nonlinear stress-strain relation. Therefore, the operating myocardial stiffness can be altered by both changes in loading and myocardial mechanical properties. OBJECTIVES: This

Investigation of Murine Vaginal Creep Response to Altered Mechanical Loads.

The vagina is a viscoelastic fibromuscular organ that provides support to the pelvic organs. The viscoelastic properties of the vagina are understudied but may be critical for pelvic stability. Most studies evaluate vaginal viscoelasticity under a single uniaxial load; however, the vagina is subjected to dynamic multiaxial loading in the body. It is unknown how varied multiaxial loading conditions affect vaginal viscoelastic behavior and which microstructural processes dictate the viscoelastic response. Therefore, the objective was to develop methods using extension-inflation protocols to quan…

How to perform shear wave elastography. Part I.

We recently introduced a series of papers describing how to do certain techniques. This article is the first part of a review of shear wave elastography (SWE). It reports the principles and interpretation of the technique and describes how to optimize it. Normal values, pitfalls and artefacts for the examination of liver, breast. thyroid and salivary gland with shear wave elastography are presented. The manuscript provides specific tips for applying SWE as part of a diagnostic US examination.

Effect of tube length on the buckling pressure of collapsible tubes.

BACKGROUND: The higher incidence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in men than in women has been attributed to the upper airway being longer … The numerical methods were validated with in vitro experiments in a silicone tube whose modulus of elasticity (361 ± 28 kPa) and dimensions (length = 100 mm, diameter = 22.2 mm, and wall thickness = 1.59 mm) were selected so that tube compliance was similar to pharyngeal compliance in humans during sleep. The buckling pressure (transmural pressure at which …

Ultrasound Elastography-Cornerstone of Non-Invasive Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease Assessment.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease has become the most common chronic liver disease as well as the most common cause for liver transplantation. With its different methods types, elastography of the liver can be used for non-invasive evaluation of the liver fibrosis and steatosis degree. The article focuses on the description, use, advantages, and limitations of the currently known elastographic techniques. It proposes a simple risk assessment algorithm for the liver fibrosis progress evaluation. The following is an overview of the use of liver and spleen elastography in the d

Liver stiffness measurement is a potent predictor of histological fibrosis regression after hepatitis C virus clearance.

BACKGROUND: Most of the studies on fibrosis regression prediction were based on noninvasive fibrosis markers and differ greatly. The 'Beijing fibrosis classification' can use histological results to classify fibrosis into progressive or 'nonprogressive' according to fibrotic septal morphology. We use this standard which served as the gold standard in order to find fibrosis regression predictors. AIM: To study the predictors of fibrosis regression after hepatitis C virus clearance according to histological fibrosis staging by the 'Beijing fibrosis classification'. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This

Liver stiffness measured with two-dimensional shear wave elastography comparable to histopathology falls dominantly on the severe liver fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Two-dimensional shear-wave elastography (2D-SWE) has been used for years for liver assessment of patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB), but its effectiveness remains unclear in different populations and using different ultrasound systems. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effectiveness of 2D-SWE in evaluating liver fibrosis in patients with CHB. METHODS: A prospective investigation was conducted after approval by the institutional ethics committee, with 116 out of 133 patients with CHB referred for liver biopsy included and 50 patients with healthy livers selected as contr

The influence of sample geometry and size on porcine aortic material properties from uniaxial tensile tests using custom-designed tissue cutters, clamps and molds.

The aim of this study was to identify the influence of specimen geometry and size on the results of aortic uniaxial tensile tests using custom-designed tissue cutters, clamps and molds. Six descending thoracic aortas from pigs were used for rectangular sample tests, in which the circumferential and axial specimens had widths of 6 mm, 8 mm and 10 mm. The other six aortas were used for the dog-bone-shaped sample tests and were punched into circumferential, axial and oblique specimens with widths of 2 mm, 4 mm and 6 mm. We performed uniaxial tensile tests on the specimens and compared the test re

Detrusor overactivity assessment using ultrasound bladder vibrometry.

Objective. Detrusor overactivity (DO) is a urodynamic observation characterized by fluctuations in detrusor pressure (Pdet) of the bladder. Although detecting DO is important for the management of bladder symptoms, the invasive nature of urodynamic studies (UDS) makes it a source of discomfort and morbidity for patients. Ultrasound bladder vibrometry (UBV) could provide a direct and noninvasive means of detecting DO, due to its sensitivity to changes in elasticity and load in the bladder wall. In this study, we investigated the feasibility and applying UBV toward detecting DO.Approach. UBV and…

Advances in vascular anatomy and pathophysiology using high resolution and multiparametric sonography.

B-mode and Color Doppler are the first-line imaging modalities in cardiovascular diseases. However, conventional ultrasound (US) provides a lower spatial and temporal resolution (70-100 frames per second) compared to ultrafast technology which acquires several thousand frames per second. Consequently, the multiparametric ultrafast platforms manage new imaging algorithms as high-frequency ultrasound, contrast-enhanced ultrasound, shear wave elastography, vector flow, and local pulse wave imaging. These advances allow better ultrasound performances, more detailed blood flow visualization and ves

Measurement of liver and spleen stiffness as complementary methods for assessment of liver fibrosis in autoimmune hepatitis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Liver stiffness measurements (LSM), commonly performed by transient elastography (TE) or two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE), are used to quantify liver fibrosis. Active hepatitis, a hallmark of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), could bias LSM. This bias might be overcome by measurement spleen 2D-SWE. Here, we compare liver and spleen 2D-SWE to TE and liver biopsy (LB) in prospectively recruited patients with AIH. METHODS: We analysed liver and spleen 2D-SWE in relation to liver TE in 90 patients treated ≥ 6 months for AIH. Liver and spleen 2D-SWE were also compare

Impact of Vertical Stiffness Gradient on the Maximum Divergence Angle.

INTRODUCTION: During vocal fold vibration, the medial surface of both folds forms a convergent shape during opening and a divergent shape during closing. A greater maximum divergence angle is associated with greater closing forces which will increase the closing speed of the glottis. An increased closing speed results in a greater acoustic intensity and greater vocal efficiency. Indentation testing showed that as the strain increases, the inferior aspect of the folds becomes stiffer than the superior aspect, resulting in the vertical stiffness gradient (VSG). We hypothesize that a reduction of

Mapping the relationships between joint stiffness, modeled muscle stiffness, and shear wave velocity.

Joint stiffness is often measured to make inferences about the stiffness of muscle groups, but little can be gleaned about individual muscles. Decomposing the muscular origins of joint stiffness may inform treatment targets for conditions like spasticity. To complement joint stiffness, shear wave ultrasound elastography has been used to estimate the material properties of individual muscles. If shear wave measures are to be used to assess the muscular origins of joint stiffness, then changes in shear wave velocity should strongly relate to changes in joint stiffness. Here, we estimated the rel
