Human Fecal Pollution Monitoring and Microbial Risk Assessment for Water Reuse Potential in a Coastal Industrial-Residential Mixed-Use Watershed.

Rapid economic development has caused industrial expansion into residential communities, leading to higher fecal pollution loads that could be discharged into aquatic environments. However, little is known regarding the potential microbial impact on human health. This study investigated microbial contamination from coastal industrial-residential community areas in nine sampling sites in waterways during three dry events. A general microbial source tracking (MST) marker, GenBac3, was detected in all samples from all three events, indicating continuing fecal pollution in the area, mostly from hu

Prevalence, antibiotic susceptibility and characterization of Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolates in China.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a marine and estuarine bacterium that poses a major threat to human health worldwide. In this study, from 2017 to 2019, we evaluated 900 food samples collected from China in 2017, with the aim of determining the incidence and features of V. parahaemolyticus in ready-to-eat (RTE) foods, shrimp and fish in China. The contamination rates in these were 3.67, 19.33 and 10.67%, respectively, and the prevalence of V. parahaemolyticus was higher in summer than in winter. In addition, 101 V. parahaemolyticus strains were isolated. Our results suggested that most of the isolat

Aflatoxin B1: A review on metabolism, toxicity, occurrence in food, occupational exposure, and detoxification methods.

Aflatoxins are a class of carcinogenic mycotoxins produced by Aspergillus fungi and are known to contaminate a large portion of the world's food supply. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is the most potent of these compounds and has been well-characterized to lead to the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in humans and animals. This review focuses on the metabolism of AFB1, including epoxidation and DNA adduction, as it concerns the initiation of cancer and the underlying mechanisms. The link between AFB1 consumption and HCC is also discussed including synergistic interactions with the hepatitis

Immunochemical assay with monoclonal antibodies for detection of staphylococcal enterotoxin H.

Staphylococcal enterotoxins cause food poisoning of various degrees of severity. For milk and meat products, there is a high probability of contamination with staphylococcal enterotoxin H (SEH). In this regard specific and sensitive methods are required to be developed for its detection and monitoring. In this work, the gene seh was expressed and a preparation of recombinant toxin was obtained. Using hybridoma technology, a panel of high-affinity monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) to SEH was produced. The antibodies were characterized and shown to have no cross-reactivity towards the main staphyloco

Trace element concentrations in hair of subjects from two South Pacific Islands, Atafu (Tokelau) and Kitava (Papua New Guinea).

The concentrations of trace elements in hair were measured in 108 healthy subjects (60 males and 48 females, mean age 46-years) resident on Atafu (Tokelau) and in 83 subjects (63 males and 20 females, mean age 26-years) living on Kitava island (Papua New Guinea). On Kitava, a traditional subsistence lifestyle uninfluenced by Western dietary habits is still maintained, but on Atafu the dietary habits have been modified by the inclusion of such imported foods as rice, flour, sugar and canned meat and fish. The concentrations of zinc and magnesium in hair were significantly higher in the Kitava t

The hidden threat: Comprehensive assessment of antibiotic and disinfectant resistance in commercial pig slaughterhouses.

The presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), disinfectant resistance genes (DRGs), and pathogens in animal food processing environments (FAPE) poses a significant risk to human health. However, knowledge of the contamination and risk profiles of a typical commercial pig slaughterhouse with periodic disinfectant applications is limited. By creating the overall metagenomics-based behavior and risk profiles of ARGs, DRGs, and microbiomes in a nine-section pig slaughterhouse, an important FAPE in China. A total of 454 ARGs and 84 DRGs were detected in the slaughterhouse with resistance gene

Monitoring and Occurrence of Heavy PAHs in Pomace Oil Supply Chain Using a Double-Step Solid-Phase Purification and HPLC-FLD Determination.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous environmental and processing contaminants generated by both spontaneous and anthropogenic incomplete combustion processes of organic matter. Contamination of PAHs in vegetable oils can result from several factors and processes, including environmental contamination, oil processing, and migration from food contact materials. The determination of PAHs in edible oil presents a challenge because of the complexity of the matrix. Since PAHs are present at lower levels than triglycerides, it is necessary to isolate the compounds of interest from

Brain processing of visual stimuli representing sexual penetration versus core and animal-reminder disgust in women with lifelong vaginismus.

It has been proposed that disgust evolved to protect humans from contamination. Through eliciting the overwhelming urge to withdraw from the disgusting stimuli, it would facilitate avoidance of contact with pathogens. The physical proximity implied in sexual intercourse provides ample opportunity for contamination and may thus set the stage for eliciting pathogen disgust. Building on this, it has been argued that the involuntary muscle contraction characteristic of vaginismus (i.e., inability to have vaginal penetration) may be elicited by the prospect of penetration by potential contaminants.

Optimizing fruit and vegetable by-products/wastes exploitation: diversity, safety and biotechnological innovations based on lactic acid bacteria.

Over the last few years, global demand for fruit and vegetable production has increased as the world's population and demographics have shifted toward healthier lifestyles. Together, the agri-food industry has continued to grow worldwide, driven by advances in planting technology and the optimization of production processes, resulting in the generation of massive agricultural residues. These residues account for almost 50% of the primary material biomass, and they are rich in high-value components such as antioxidants, pigments, flavors, and dietary fibers. In this context, the circular econom

Allergic Anisakiasis: An Integrated Review of Human, Animal and Cellular Evidence.

Allergic anisakiasis (AA), caused by the ingestion of fish contaminated with Anisakis larvae, has emerged as a growing global health concern due to the increasing consumption of raw or undercooked seafood. Anisakis simplex is identified as the primary etiologic species, responsible for gastrointestinal symptoms, IgE-mediated (Type I) or cell-mediated (Type IV) manifestations, and gastro-allergic anisakiasis (GAA), a unique clinical overlap between parasitic infection and acute IgE-mediated food allergy. In this review, we analyzed the epidemiology of Anisakis simplex allergy, the main diagnost

A cluster of 11 cases of Listeria monocytogenes bacteremia in Kyoto, Japan.

BACKGROUND: Listeria monocytogenes infection, known as listeriosis, is relatively uncommon. However, in elderly or immunocompromised patients, it can lead to severe manifestations such as meningitis and bacteremia, making it a clinically important disease. The primary route of transmission is through ingestion of contaminated food, and since a wide range of food items may be involved, close collaboration with public health authorities is essential for effective source identification. CASE REPORT: We encountered 11 cases of Listeria monocytogenes bacteremia within a limited region over the cou

Exploring the potential of foodborne transmission of respiratory viruses.

The ongoing pandemic involving severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has raised the question whether this virus, which is known to be spread primarily though respiratory droplets, could be spread through the fecal-oral route or via contaminated food. In this article, we present a critical review of the literature exploring the potential foodborne transmission of several respiratory viruses including human coronaviruses, avian influenza virus (AVI), parainfluenza viruses, human respiratory syncytial virus, adenoviruses, rhinoviruses, and Nipah virus. Portable Nanofiber-Light Addressable Potentiometric Sensor for Rapid Escherichia coli Detection in Orange Juice.

The growing need to prevent pathogen outbreaks is irrefutable in the case of the food industry. Early detection in products, especially beverages, contaminated with bacterial strains is vital to avoid infected foods from reaching the consumer. If E. coli is pesent in such foods, it can cause infections. It can also be an indicator of the existence of other harmful coliforms. In this study, we have investigated the detection of Escherichia coli ( E. coli) in orange juice using a portable nanofiber-light addressable potentiometric sensor (NF-LAPS). We have chosen electrospun pH-sensitive poly(vi

Changes in activity of non-specific esterases in cadmium treated Lymantria dispar larvae.

Many biochemical, physiological and histological criteria have been used as indicators of exposures and effects of the contaminants. These changes can indicate the response of an organism to a specific environmental stressor. In the present paper, the effect of the acute and chronic exposure to cadmium as well as recovery from two cadmium concentrations (10 and 30 μgCd/g dry food) on gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) midgut esterases was investigated. The influence of cadmium on trait plasticity was also examined. Esterases showed great sensitivity to low metal concentrations during acute and chro
