Use of a computer-based postal questionnaire for the detection of hypothyroidism following radioiodine therapy for thyrotoxicosis.

A computer-processed postal questionnaire was devised to detect hypothyroidism in patients treated previously for thyrotoxicosis with radioiodine. In a study of 232 patients treated with 131I at the Royal Melbourne Hospital between four and ten years previously, the sum of symptomatic answers in the questionnaire was a sensitive discriminator of hypothyroidism, and allowed 80% of euthyroid patients to be excluded from further assessment. Questions concerned with general well-being and energy, voice and skin changes, showed the highest sensitivity and specificity. The combination of these quest

Clinical Validation of Computer-Aided Diagnosis Software for Preventing Retained Surgical Sponges.

BACKGROUND: We previously reported the successful development of a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for preventing retained surgical sponges with deep learning using training data, including composite and simulated radiographs. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of the CAD system in a clinical setting. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 1,053 postoperative radiographs obtained from patients 20 years of age or older who underwent surgery were evaluated. We implemented a foreign object detection application software on the portable radiographic device used in the operating room to detect retai

An internet-based wearable watch-over system for elderly and disabled utilizing EMG and accelerometer.

An effective way for preventing injuries and diseases among the elderly is to monitor their daily lives. In this regard, we propose the use of a "Hyper Hospital Network", which is an information support system for elderly people and patients. In the current study, we developed a wearable system for monitoring electromyography (EMG) and acceleration using the Hyper Hospital Network plan. The current system is an upgraded version of our previous system for gait analysis (Yoshida et al. [13], Telemedicine and e-Health 13 703-714), and lets us monitor decreases in exercise and the presence of a he

Influence of plant structure and flow path interactions on the plant purification system: dynamic evolution of the SO2 pollution.

Sulfur dioxide is a major air pollutant in the environment. Fortunately, the plant purification system can effectively reduce SO2 pollution. However, the effect mechanism of plant purification system for the dynamic evolution of SO2 remains incompletely clear. In this work, inspired by the "Boston ivy," we successfully designed and constructed a semi-continuous plant system. Subsequently, based on the "vine-like plant" and the "island-like plant," the semi-continuous plant system and the isolated plant system are selected as the models of plant purification system, respectively. The dynamic ev

The double-edged sword of human-AI collaboration on design students' competence development: The mediating roles of challenge and hindrance appraisals and the asymmetric moderation of teacher AI leadership.

The deepening integration of generative AI into design education is driving a paradigm shift in human-computer AI collaboration (HAIC) -from mere tool assistance toward intelligent synergy. However, its dual impact on the competency development of design students and the underlying mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. Grounded in the Theory of Stress Appraisal, this study constructs a research model to examine the double-edged sword effect of HAIC on Design Competence (DC), introducing teacher AI Leadership (AIL) as a moderating variable. The aim is to reveal the psychological mechanis

Applications of artificial intelligence in personalized nutrition interventions.

Unhealthy dietary patterns remain a major modifiable contributor to the global burden of obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cardiovascular disease, and cancer. However, individuals can respond markedly differently to identical foods, limiting the effectiveness of one-size-fits-all dietary guidance. This review examines the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to personalized nutrition interventions across three interconnected layers. At the biological level, inter-individual variability can be characterized by three mechanistic dimensions: nutrigenomic variation, which influences

Deep visual detection system for oral squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) is a widespread and aggressive malignancy where early and accurate detection is essential for improving patient outcomes. Traditional diagnostic methods relying on histopathological examination are often time-consuming, resource-intensive, and susceptible to subjective interpretation. Moreover, inter-observer variability can further compromise diagnostic consistency, leading to delays in timely intervention. In recent years, advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and computer-aided diagnostic systems have shown transformative potential in medic

Endoscopic and histopathological phenotypes of early gastric neoplasia: toward an integrative host-response framework.

BACKGROUND: Early gastric neoplasia represents a clinically decisive but biologically heterogeneous interval in gastric carcinogenesis. Contemporary endoscopy has improved lesion detection and characterization through white-light endoscopy, linked color imaging, blue laser imaging, magnifying narrow-band imaging, and computer-aided systems. Histopathology remains essential for defining dysplasia, invasion depth, differentiation, mucin phenotype, and endoscopic curability. However, most current diagnostic frameworks remain predominantly lesion-centered and incompletely account for the injured m

Development and Clinical Evaluation of a Wearable 12-Lead Electrocardiographic Platform with Automated ECG Analysis for Telemedicine Applications.

Wearable electrocardiographic technologies have become increasingly important for continuous cardiac monitoring; however, most existing portable systems are limited by the number of recorded leads or provide only basic signal acquisition without advanced automated analysis. This study presents a third-generation wearable twelve-lead electrocardiographic platform developed for multilead ECG acquisition and automated spatial ECG analysis. Compared with the previous generation, the hardware modification primarily consists of architectural consolidation: functions previously distributed across an

Distributed cortico-subcortical networks enable robust speech state detection from sparse intracranial recordings.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate and reliable detection of speech state transitions is a prerequisite for practical speech brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). While cortical language areas have been extensively studied, it remains unclear whether speech onset information is exclusively localized to these regions or distributed across a broader cortico-subcortical network. Here, we investigated the feasibility of decoding speech state transitions using sparse stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG) recordings that sample both cortical and subcortical structures. METHODS: Four Mandarin-speaking epilepsy patie

Accelerating sow nursing behavior monitoring with modified YOLO11n architecture and TensorRT integration.

BACKGROUND: Efficient monitoring of sow nursing behavior is relevant to animal welfare monitoring and management of preweaning mortality (PWM) risk, which remains a significant challenge in intensive swine production systems. Traditional observation methods are labor-intensive and inadequate for large-scale farms, requiring automated solutions. Precision livestock farming (PLF) technologies, particularly computer vision and deep learning models, offer opportunities for continuous monitoring of sow posture–nursing-state classes. The YOLO (you only look once) architecture has demonstrated high a

Artificial intelligence-based lung nodule detection for pulmonary arteriovenous fistulas on chest computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary arteriovenous fistulas (PAVFs) are abnormal vascular communications between pulmonary arteries and veins that may cause hypoxemia and paradoxical embolism. Because many patients are asymptomatic, PAVFs are often detected incidentally on chest computed tomography (CT). Accurate identification of PAVFs is clinically important for appropriate management; however, small or atypical lesions may be overlooked during routine interpretation. Computer-aided detection (CAD) systems for pulmonary nodules are widely used in clinical practice, but their ability to detect PAVFs has not

A Digital Model to Explain the Necessity of Prostaglandin E1 After Balloon Atrial Septostomy in D-Transposition of the Great Arteries.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with D-transposition of the great arteries (TGA) often require prostaglandin E1 (PGE) even after balloon atrial septostomy (BAS). This study builds a computer simulation that analyzes whether or not elevated pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) could explain the profound hypoxemia seen in some patients after PGE discontinuation. METHODS: We developed a systems-based mathematical model of TGA incorporating systemic and pulmonary circulations, an atrial septal defect (ASD), and a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), with bidirectional atrial mixing. The PGE-on pre-BAS state repres

Dual imagery tasks for EEG-based brain-computer interfaces: a feasibility study of combinatorial mental state classification.

INTRODUCTION: Active brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) aim to enable communication and control without requiring physical movement. BCIs operate by detecting and decoding distinct patterns of brain activity associated with intentionally-generated mental tasks and translating them into commands for external devices. Motor imagery (MI) tasks involving the imagined movement of body parts are the most commonly used control paradigms in active BCIs; however, such systems are typically limited to a relatively small number of commands. Expanding the number of distinguishable mental states could increa

BACKGROUND: Heavy cannabis use may impact neurocognitive functions, particularly prefrontal and limbic systems responsible for risk/reward processing and executive function, which are essential for certain health behaviors, such as HIV prevention. Rigorous research into the effects of cannabis on neurocognitive functions remains limited, particularly among populations with a high burden of HIV. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to (1) evaluate associations between cannabis use and neurocognition, (2) evaluate associations between cannabis use and engagement in HIV status-neutral care outcomes (eg, p

Multiconfigurational Study on the Contribution of the Nondynamical and Dynamical Correlation Energies to the Dissociation Energies of Li2-to-F2 Molecules.

Approaching the exact solution of nonrelativistic electronic wave equation in molecules and the calculation of thermochemical quantities with high accuracy, without the help of extrapolation techniques or complicating r 12 terms, is still a challenging task in quantum chemistry. Recent advances in computer hardware made it possible to achieve very high accuracy. However, it is still difficult to describe many chemically important situations where the key problem is the inherent multideterminental nature of the wave function. The inclusion of nondynamical correlation in terms of internal correl

One Size Fits All? Development of the CPOSS209 Data Set of Experimental and Hypothetical Polymorphs for Testing Computational Modeling Methods.

Organic crystal structure prediction (CSP) studies have led to the rapid development of methods for predicting the relative energies of known and computer-generated crystal structures. There is a compromise between the level of theoretical treatment, its reliability across different types of organic systems, how its accuracy depends on the size and shape of the unit cell, and the size and the number of structures that can be modeled at an affordable computational cost. We have used our database of crystal structure prediction studies, often performed as a complement to experimental screening,

Performance analysis of 2D and 3D image features for computer-assisted speech diagnosis of dental sibilants in Polish children.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Sigmatism is a speech disorder concerning sibilants, and its diagnosis affects many Polish children of preschool age. The success of therapy often depends on early and accurate diagnosis. This paper presents research findings on using 2D and 3D (time-related) visual features to analyze the place of articulation, sibilance (the character of a gap between teeth that allows the articulation of sibilant sounds), and tongue positioning in four of twelve Polish sibilants:/s/,/z/,/ʦ/, and/dz/. METHODS: A dedicated data acquisition system captured the stereovision stream dur
