Postnatal changes of cerebral blood flow velocity in normal term neonates.

Postnatal changes of cerebral blood flow velocity were studied in 43 healthy term neonates using a continuous waveform bidirectional Doppler flowmeter and an ultrasonograph with a pulsed Doppler unit. Pulsatility Index (PI) values of anterior cerebral artery were high within 6 hours after birth, and then decreased in the neonates born by means of both vaginal delivery and caesarean section. These postnatal changes of PI observed with the continuous waveform bidirectional Doppler flowmeter were identical with those with pulsed Doppler technique. The sequential measurement of right radial artery…

Antepartum middle mean cerebral blood flow velocity correlation with maternal hemodynamics.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the correlation between simultaneous assessment of maternal middle cerebral blood flow velocity with the other maternal hemodynamic factors of cardiac output and mean arterial pressure. STUDY DESIGN: Eight normotensive patients were assessed. Maternal cerebral blood flow velocity was assessed using transcranial Doppler. Cardiac output was assessed noninvasively using the thoracic electrical bioimpedance technique over four cycles. Transcranial assessment of cerebral blood flow velocity was done over four cycles. Statistical analysis was then done using the Pearson corr…

Cerebral blood flow velocity decreases during cognitive stimulation in Huntington's disease.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether activation of cerebral blood flow velocity during cognitive stimulation, as measured by transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD), is altered in patients with Huntington's Disease (HD). BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests that resting cerebral blood flow in symptomatic and asymptomatic HD patients is reduced from expected premorbid levels. The effects of cognitive activation on this relative hypoperfusion in HD has not been studied extensively. METHODS: We measured TCD flow velocity during rest and cognitive testing with the Porteus Maze Test and the Trails …

Cerebral blood flow velocity in patients with subclinical portal-systemic encephalopathy.

UNLABELLED: Alterations in cerebral blood flow (CBF) are implicated in the etiology of portal-systemic encephalopathy. We hypothesized that CO2 reactivity of the cerebral circulation may be impaired in subjects with chronic liver disease (CLD) who also had subclinical portal-systemic encephalopathy (SPSE). We compared the relationship between PETCO2 and cerebral blood flow velocity in 10 patients with CLD with those of 10 healthy control subjects. Middle cerebral artery mean blood flow velocity (MCAMFV) was measured using transcranial Doppler during rest, hyperventilation, and hypoventilation.…

Successful scleral buckling procedures decrease central retinal artery blood flow velocity.

BACKGROUND: Limited data suggest that scleral buckling procedures may decrease posterior segment blood flow. How this may affect functional outcome remains unknown. METHODS: In a prospective, controlled study, color Doppler imaging was used to measure blood flow velocities in the central retinal and ophthalmic arteries of both eyes in patients with unilateral rhegmatogenous retinal detachments before and after primary scleral buckle repair. Encircling elements were used in all patients. Fellow eyes served as controls. RESULTS: Data from six consecutive patients did not show significant preop

Blood velocity in the middle cerebral artery and regional cerebral blood flow during carotid endarterectomy.

Blood flow velocity in the middle cerebral artery, determined by transcranial Doppler ultrasonography, was monitored during 31 carotid endarterectomies. Electroencephalogram (EEG) was also monitored, and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was measured. The relation between rCBF and mean velocity was dependent on the rCBF level; the correlation was strong if rCBF was less than 20 ml/100 g/min but weak if rCBF was greater than that level. Ipsilateral EEG suppression was related to a rCBF threshold of 9 ml/100 g/min and to a mean velocity threshold of 15 cm/sec; the rCBF threshold was more speci…

Voluntary respiratory control and cerebral blood flow velocity upon ice-water immersion.

INTRODUCTION: In non-habituated subjects, cold-shock response to cold-water immersion causes rapid reduction in cerebral blood flow velocity (approximately 50%) due to hyperventilation, increasing risk of syncope, aspiration, and drowning. Adaptation to the response is possible, but requires several cold immersions. This study examines whether thorough instruction enables non-habituated persons to attenuate the ventilatory component of cold-shock response. METHODS: There were nine volunteers (four women) who were lowered into a 0 degrees C immersion tank for 60 s. Middle cerebral artery mean …

Slow oscillations in middle cerebral artery cerebral blood flow velocity and aging.

OBJECTIVE: A recent study using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) showed that low frequency oscillations of regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) decline with age. Using transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD), it is possible to monitor similar fluctuations in cerebral blood velocity (CBV) in basal cerebral vessels. Such oscillations have been used widely in the assessment of cerebral autoregulation. We postulated that it should be possible to observe similar age related reductions in the amplitude of slow waves recorded using TCD. METHODS: We studied 187 patients with head injury, who were admitt
