Severe hypernatraemic dehydration developed over the first twelve days of life in a breastfed infant girl. Upon oral rehydration with formula milk, no acute neurological problems arose, but she subsequently developed necrotizing enterocolitis. Intravenous rehydration may be preferred to the oral route in such infants.

The present study was undertaken to determine pathophysiology of body water control in hypernatremic subjects with hypothalamic space-occupy … .1 mmol/kg. Serum Na levels had a positive correlation with hematocrit (Ht) in 2 of 5 subjects with dehydration, but it totally disappeared in the 3 subjects without dehydration. Plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP) levels were 0.7 +/- 0.1 pmol/l, and there was no response of AVP release to intravenous administration of 5% NaCl in the subjects with dehydration. …

AIMS: This study aimed to unravel the dehydration status of patients with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) to facilitate the understanding of dehydration in CVST.
METHODS: This was a multicenter retrospective study and three populations were recruited, namely, patients with CVST, CVST mimics, and healthy subjects. Blood samples were obtained 1-2 days after admission to assess dehydration status. Stata 15.1 was performed for statistical analysis.
RESULTS: A total of 208 patients were diagnosed with CVST, 237 with CVST mimics, and 200 healthy individuals were enrolled. The urine specifi…

A 28-year-old female presented with severe dehydration due to acute diarrhea and vomiting, which she developed after returning from a vacation in Togo. Her stool was watery, with flecks of mucous, also referred to as "rice-water" stool, which is typical for cholera and can amount to 1000 cc/hour. The infection was confirmedby stool culture.

AIM: This study aimed to analyze sweat rate, water percentage alteration, and temperature variation during kendo practice in order to relate the thermal stress induced by such sports and draw recommendations for its secure practice.
METHODS: Participants were 12 male individuals. The studied variables were: age, weight, stature, body mass index, fat percentage, water loss percentage, tympanic temperature, and sweat rate. Measures were obtained in one day of 120 min practice (T: 24.1 ± 2.5 °C; RH: 73 ± 8.5%) using obligatory training equipment.
RESULTS: The age of participants was on average

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal dehydration with hypernatraemia is a serious condition with risk of cerebral damage and death. Recent studies have reported a rising incidence.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted at Hvidovre Hospital over a 5-year period to identify term or near-term infants (>35 weeks of gestation) who were admitted with a weight-loss >10%. Infants admitted between the 3rd and the 14th day of life with a discharge diagnosis code indicating dehydration were also included.
RESULTS: During the period a total of 89 infants were admitted and 24 had hypernatraemia. T…

Case report on severe hypernatraemic dehydration in a non-recognised collodion baby who also suffered from hydrops fetalis caused by supraventricular tachycardia. Excessive transcutaneous fluid loss caused s-Na+ reaching 182 mmol/l within 36 hours of birth. The infant was cautiously rehydrated during the following three days. No sign of neurologic impairment was observed. It is emphasized that early observation of the collodion baby must take place in a humidified incubator. Major weight changes in the newborn should always result in analysis of serum sodium.

Severe neonatal hypernatraemia is a life-threatening electrolyte disorder because of its neurological complications. These are brain oedema, intracranial haemorrhages, haemorrhagic infarcts and thromboses. There are few reports concerning the radiological findings in the central nervous system in severe neonatal hypernatraemia. Cranial MRI findings in hypernatraemia have been reported in an older child, but have not been described in newborn infants. We report the cranial MRI findings in a newborn infant with acute renal failure and severe hypernatraemia.

Three cases highlight the association between elevated breast milk sodium and hypernatremic dehydration in the infant. All three mothers, breast-feeding exclusively, had sodium levels in breast milk elevated significantly above normal. Severe hypernatremic dehydration in otherwise normal infants who are exclusively breast fed can be due to elevated sodium levels in breast milk.

Auditory dehydration testing with oral hyperosmolar substances is commonly used in the evaluation of patients with suspected endolymphatic hydrops. Endolymphatic hydrops is assumed to be temporarily reduced in some cases, resulting in an improvement in hearing. Unfortunately, ingestion of glycerol, the most frequently used oral agent, often causes severe headache, vomiting, or both. Urea has recently been used as an alternative. A study of patients with Meniere's disease was designed to compare the effectiveness of glycerol versus urea in inducing a temporary improvement in hearing thresholds.…

A revision of the ethiology in hypertonic dehydration of 80 infants admitted in the Clínica Infantil "La Paz", between 1972--1973 is made. The most important ethiological factors were: hyperconcentrated food (86% in neonates), vomiting, diarrhoea, increase of insensible water loss (respiratory, fever). The etiopathogenic and physiopathologic bases of hyperconcentrated diet in the development of hypertonic dehydration in accordance with "solute overload" to neonatal kidney are discussed. The autoperpetuation mechanisms of hypertonic dehydration are also discussed.
