Prolonged middle ear ventilation with the cartilage shield T-tube tympanoplasty.

BACKGROUND: In 1994, the favorable experience with composite cartilage shield tympanoplasty was reported to the American Otological Society. On that occasion, the technical question regarding the concomitant placement of a ventilating tube was posed. In response, the authors proposed that the tympanostomy tube be incorporated in the cartilage graft. Moreover, they proposed that this marriage, when used to reverse atelectasis and to repneumatize the middle ear, should offer the advantage of both procedures while reducing the incidence of tube extrusion and other complications of prolonged intub

Evaluation of Type III Tympanoplasty Using Cartilage Ossiculoplasty in Cholesteatoma Ear Surgery.

This prospective observational study evaluates the role of tympanoplasty type III in cholesteatoma ear disease during same sitting with mastoid surgery using cartilage ossiculoplasty. Forty patients of chronic suppurative otitis media-cholesteatoma disease were recruited in the study. All the patients had extensive cholesteatoma and underwent canal wall down mastoid surgery. Tympanoplasty type III, that is, stapes columella, minor columella, or major columella, was done in each case along with mastoid surgery depending upon the remnant ossicular status. Conchal cartilage graft was used for oss

Cartilage-sparing techniques versus percutaneous adjustable closed otoplasty for prominent ear deformity.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study is to follow longitudinally the prominent ears treated by either cartilage-sparing techniques (CSTs) or percutaneous adjustable closed otoplasty (PACO) and compare them as to efficacy, reoccurrence, complications, and patient contentedness. METHODS: The CSTs were applied to the first group, that is, 17 patients (32 ears) with stiff auricular cartilage; whereas PACO was applied to the second group, 15 patients (28 ears) with soft auricular cartilage. Auriculocephalic distances were recorded at 4 levels preoperatively, at the completion of the surgery, and agai

Prominent Ear Correction Using Full-Thickness Cartilage Strip: An Incomplete Cutting Technique.

BACKGROUND: Prominent ears are one of the most well-known facial disfigurements influencing youngsters. Approximately 5% of the population suffers from some degree of ear prominence. More than 200 techniques have been used for the surgical correction of prominent ears, referring that no single "best" method exists and that techniques and modifications will continue to appear. OBJECTIVES: In this work, we are going to evaluate the results of using a full-thickness cartilage strip, an incomplete cutting technique for the correction of various degrees of the prominent ear. PATIENTS AND METHODS:

Eyelid Reconstruction Using Oral Mucosa and Ear Cartilage Strips as Sandwich Grafting.

BACKGROUND: The eyelid structure can be divided into an inner layer and an outer layer. Reconstruction of a full-thickness eyelid defect is accomplished by full-thickness composite tissue transfer or combined layered reconstruction. We present a new technique for inner layer reconstruction using ear cartilage and oral mucosa. METHODS: The oral mucosa graft is harvested from the inner side of the lower lip to fit the defect size and shape. The ear cartilage graft is harvested as a rectangular strip. The harvested mucosa is sutured to the defect margin and the cartilage strip graft is interpose…

A Case Report of a Middle Ear Mass Originated From Cartilage-like Tissue Treated With Transcanal Endoscopic Ear Surgery.

Middle ear tumors are relatively rare, and among them, the diagnoses of middle ear lesions originating from cartilage-like tissue are even rarer. Use of transcanal endoscopic ear surgery (TEES) has increased in recent years because of its advantages, such as clear visual field and minimally invasive procedure. Here, we report a middle ear mass originating from cartilage-like tissue treated with TEES. A 62-year-old woman presented with progressive right-sided hearing loss. A white mass was revealed through the tympanic membrane, and pure-tone audiometry detected a mean 50.0 dB conductive hearin

IL-6 signaling is required for the development and regeneration of ear cartilage in microtia.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital microtia is a birth defect characterized by auricular underdevelopment, with unclear pathogenesis and unidentified … le of key biomolecules. RESULTS: We found that IL-6 may be the key biomolecule in microtia. Normal ear cartilage tissue is mainly composed of chondrocytes, but microtia auricular ear tissue contained chondrocytes and stem cells. IL-6 signaling pathway is the main intercellular communication pathways in microtia. We extracted primary chondrocytes and stem cells …

A Contemporary Review of Trachea, Nose, and Ear Cartilage Bioengineering and Additive Manufacturing.

The complex structure, chemical composition, and biomechanical properties of craniofacial cartilaginous structures make them challenging to reconstruct. Autologous grafts have limited tissue availability and can cause significant donor-site morbidity, homologous grafts often require immunosuppression, and alloplastic grafts may have high rates of infection or displacement. Furthermore, all these grafting techniques require a high level of surgical skill to ensure that the reconstruction matches the original structure. Current research indicates that additive manufacturing shows promise in over

Comparison of Nasal Septum and Ear Cartilage as a Graft for Lower Eyelid Reconstruction.

In lower eyelid reconstruction, several types of grafts from the nasal septum, ear cartilage, buccal mucosa, and hard palate mucosa have been used for an inner layer of the lower eyelid, but there have been no studies comparing these grafts. The authors retrospectively reviewed our cases of lower eyelid reconstruction, and compared chondromucosal grafts from the nasal septum (N = 8) and ear cartilage grafts (N = 10) for an inner layer of the lower eyelid. The authors observed no significant difference in operative time, blood loss, or length of hospital stay between the "nasal septum" and "ear…

An effective technique of helical cartilage scoring for correction of prominent ear deformity.

Otoplasty has a long history starting from 1948, when Dieffenbach described it first. Multiple technical modifications have been reported since. We propose a technique of scoring the helical cartilage without a visible incision on the lateral aspect of pinna for easier remolding of cartilage through posterior approach. The results have been excellent.

Long-term anatomic and functional results of cartilage tympanoplasty in atelectatic ears.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the anatomic and functional results of cartilage tympanoplasty performed on atelectatic ears using the palisade technique and to assess the long-term efficacy of cartilage palisades in preventing recurrent retractions. The records of 54 patients (56 ears) who underwent surgery for atelectasis with or without mastoidectomy from January 2000 to August 2005 were retrospectively evaluated. A successful outcome was defined as complete and intact healing of the graft without perforation, retraction, or lateralization for at least 36 months after the operation

Effect of the carbon dioxide laser on viability of ear cartilage in a rabbit model.

The carbon dioxide (CO2) laser can be used for rapid, detailed sculpting of cartilage for creation of an ear framework for reconstruction of microtia. Clinical and animal studies of the effect of the CO2 laser have noted good healing with little evidence of a zone of tissue injury adjacent to the laser incisions. The current study has investigated the longer term effect of CO2 on chondrocyte viability in a rabbit ear model in which the laser has been used to incise autogenous cartilage segments for implantation into subcutaneous pockets. Over a 3-month period, the conformational integrity of t

The treatment of the ears with advanced pathology using a composite graft of perichondrium and cartilage.

In ears with advanced pathology the functional and anatomical results of a surgical procedure depend on factors such as total perforation, tympanosclerosis. Atelectasis. Suppuration or possibility a previous operation. A Perichondrium-Cartilage Composite Graft (PCCG) was used to repair the tympanic membrane by a total of 350 cases over a five-year period in total, 157 type I tympanoplasty procedures (15% with previous surgery) and 193 type III procedures (52% with previous surgery) were carried out. The graft was obtained from the tragus and/or the conceal cartilage. Two slightly different sur
