The X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is characterized by hypohidrosis, hypotrichosis and hypodontia. Sebaceous and salivary glands ar also affected. Recognition of the syndrome usually comes from affected man, although female carriers may show symptoms. Dental treatment is complicated and should be coordinated by a dentist in a centre for special dental care. Cooperation with an orthodontist and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon is advocated.

Patients with ectodermal dysplasia may request breast reconstruction. In addition to abnormalities of other ectodermally derived structures, the breast and nipple-areolar complex may be absent or hypoplastic. Although this group of patients may have concerns with hair, nails, teeth, or even upper limb malformations, this report focuses on reconstruction of the breast anomalies. Four unrelated patients with ectodermal dysplasia who have undergone breast reconstruction are discussed.

Children with ectodermal dysplasia may have hypodontia or anodontia and are often treated dentally with conventional adult appearing prosthesis which are focused only on the oral manifestations of the syndrome. This case report describes the management of an ectodermal dysplasia patient to provide improved aesthetics, function, and emotional development.

HED is an X-linked recessive disease involving abnormalities of tissues of ectodermal origin due to developmental disturbances in the embryonal state. These abnormalities include 1) trichodysplasia, 2) dental defects, 3) onychodysplasia, and 4) dyshidrosis. Also common are thin, dry skin, typical facial features such as saddle-nose deformity and periorbital wrinkling/pigmentation, otolaryngologic problems, eczema, and respiratory disease. Diagnosis of HED may be suspected in a child with recurrent fever of unknown etiology, thin blond hair, and anodontia. The diagnosis can be strengthened by l

The authors describe the ophthalmological findings and clinical course in two patients with EEC syndrome and one patient with anhydrotic ectodermal dysplasia. A retinal complication was seen in a 43-year-old patient which seems to be associated with the EEC syndrome and has not yet been described. A review of the literature indicates the frequency of ocular findings. So far, primary ocular changes in anhydrotic ectodermal dysplasia have never been observed. The older the patient, the more severe the secondary complications affecting the lids and cornea can be; the eye may even be lost.

Two unrelated children, a girl and a boy, with alopecia, anomalous cutaneous pigmentation, abnormal thumbs, and endocrine disorders, including short stature and delayed bone age in one patient and juvenile onset diabetes mellitus in the other, are described. In one instance, the mother and the maternal grandmother had similar abnormalities, although of a less severe nature. Both children had normal nails and no unusual susceptibility to infections. We believe these two patients represent a previously undescribed syndrome of ectodermal dysplasia that may be inherited as an autosomal-dominant tr…

Various combinations of limb anomalies, ectodermal dysplasias and orofacial clefts characterize heterozygous mutations in the transcription factor gene p63. The causative gene is crucial during embryonic ontogenesis, mostly in the development of limbs and other ectodermal derived tissues. The pattern of mutations in six different p63-related syndromes (EEC syndrome, AEC syndrome, ADULT syndrome, LMS syndrome, RHS syndrome, SHFM syndrome) shows genotype-phenotype correlations. The most frequent p63 mutation syndrome is the EEC syndrome, characterized by ectrodactyly, ectodermal dysplasia and cl…

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a rare, hereditary, congenital disease that affects several ectodermal structures. It is characterised by the following: anhidrosis or hypohidrosis, dental abnormalities, hypotrichosis, and a characteristic facies. The face shows prominent frontal bosses, supraorbital ridges and depressed bridges. We experienced a case of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia in a 43-year-old male who had four characteristic features. A skin biopsy from the palm showed a total absence of the eccrine glands. The diagnosis was made on the basis of clinical features and skin…

Ectodermal dysplasia and hypodontia were diagnosed in three families who referred to Gazi University Pedodontic Department in 1989. From the view point of dentistry, it is intended to point out the genetic transitive character of ectodermal dysplasia and its possible relation with hypodontia. Also; some approaches to satisfy the patients in social and psychological aspects besides replacing the functional and cosmetic demands were carried out.

The syndrome was characterized by striking hypoplasia of nails, malformations of hands and feet, curly hair, small lower teeth and seizures. There were no similarly affected relatives. Death occurred at 31 months with the patient apparently in status epilepticus with terminal hepatorenal syndrome.

A case is presented of anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, of extreme rarity. This is distinguished by disorders in the structures of ectodermal origin. The clinical characteristics--hypohidrosis, hypodontia, hypotrichosis-, and the genetic features--genealogy, karyotype--are examined first. The patient's face appears to be small, due to the combination of frontal bossing, hypodontia, and a depressed nasal dorsum, somewhat resembling the saddle nose of congenital syphilis. The case is studied from various perspectives: clinical, radiological, anatomicopathological and ultrastructural. The study c…

Ectodermal dysplasias (EDs) form a large clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of manifestations characterized by dystrophy or agenesis of embryologic ectodermal derivatives. Therefore skin, nails, hair, teeth and secretory organs are mainly affected. Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is the most common ED syndrom. It is characterized by atrichosis or hypotrichosis, anodontia or hypodontia and hypohidrosis. Missing teeth or retarded eruption of teeth often leads to the diagnosis of ED, which emphasizes the significance of an appropriate dental examination. Tooth agenesis and its…
