Five months after dislocation of the left shoulder a 66-year-old patient noted a swelling in the left axilla. After CT-scan a malignant tumour was suspected and an incisional biopsy was performed. A week later the patient died due to hemorrhaging from the biopsy wound. The autopsy revealed a false aneurysm of the axillary artery. The incision had damaged the external wall of the aneurysm leading to consecutive rupture. Post-mortem findings are presented.

Complications of purulent infection (peritonitis, intraabdominal abscesses) and its sequelae (acute commissural ileus, intestinal fistulas) conditioned by late hospitalization were the main cause of lethal outcomes.

Death with trichinelliasis of a 30-year-old man who had used for food raw pork not subjected to trichinelloscopy is described. In the terminal period of the disease there was a clinical picture of ascending polyradiculoneuritis of the type of Landry syndrome which was the main clinical diagnosis. Morphological examinations revealed massive larval invasion of the voluntary muscles, trichinellous myositis, glossitis, myocarditis, meningoencephalitis, trichinellous pneumonia. The cause of death was severe toxicity, respiratory and cardiac insufficiency.

Penicillamine-induced pemphigus is an uncommon but well-recognized phenomenon. It has been generally believed to be a benign disease responding to withdrawal of the drug or to treatment with a short course of oral steroids. In the hope that it will increase awareness of the potential severity of this disease, we report herein a case of penicillamine-induced pemphigus foliaceus with fatal termination.

BACKGROUND: The cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is most often asymptomatic, serious forms are confined to immunocompromised.
AIM: We report a new case of post-transfusionnel hepatitis CMV of fatal outcome.
CASE: A 83 year old man, asthmatic known for 26 years treated by corticosteroids, without particular hepatic antecedents, has presented an acute hepatitis post-transfusionnel CMV of fatal outcome.
CONCLUSION: The authors suggest widening the indications of transfusion with the blood without leucocytes to the old persons, fragile and/or whose immunizing status is precarious.

PURPOSE: Riedel thyroiditis (RT) is a rare fibroinflammatory disorder that can mimic malignancy clinically and radiologically. We report an unusually extensive, ultimately fatal case and highlight its diagnostic and therapeutic lessons.
METHODS: Case report of a 40-year-old man, with review of the clinical, imaging, histopathological and follow-up data, reported in accordance with the CARE guidelines.
RESULTS: The patient presented with a right cervicothoracic mass (64 × 45 × 115 mm) circumferentially encasing the common carotid, subclavian and innominate vessels with mediastinal extension.

The paper describes the morphopathological changes found at autopsy of a 42-year-old pregnant woman whose death was due to HELLP syndrome (Hemolysis, Elevated Liver enzymes, and Low Platelets) that is rarely encountered in autopsy practice and that is a type of preeclampsia. It considers the morphogenesis of these changes in the light of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the syndrome.

This is a report of a 39-year-old patient diagnosed with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis at the age of 17. The patient died 2 years after the onset of extra-articular cardiac symptoms. This case demonstrates the devastating course of progressive constrictive pericarditis under sole medical therapy and emphasizes the importance of early radical pericardectomy to avoid progression of disease and secondary complications with fatal outcome. Further, we discuss risk factors, diagnostic caveats, diagnostic tests and therapy of hemodynamically relevant contrictive pericarditis.

We report the first known case of daunorubicin administered directly into the human central nervous system. A 3 1/2-year-old female with pneumonia and otitis media was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and was admitted for antibiotics and chemotherapy. On the first day she inadvertently received a 17 mg intrathecal (IT) injection of daunorubicin. When the error was recognized about 1 hour later, her cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was exchanged with sterile saline by barbotage, IT hydrocortisone was given, a subarachnoid catheter was inserted, and the CSF was allowed to drain for 36 hours.

The case of a 45-year-old man with nocturnal angina and angiographically verified spontaneous spasm of the left anterior descending and left circumflex coronary arteries is described. The patient died suddenly one month after investigation, despite treatment with a beta-blocker and nitroglycerin. Other forms of pharmacological treatment should be tried in such patients.
