OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the recurrence rate, reoperation rate and side-effects of a novel technique for pterygium surgery.
DESIGN: Retrospec … Using a retrospective chart review, the outcome after attaching the transplant to the sclera with a fibrin tissue adhesive (n = 325) was compared to the outcome after graft attachment using absorbable sutures (n = 136).
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Recurrence rate, reoperation rate and complications.
RESULTS: The recurrence rate was 5.3% in the glue group and 13.5% in the s …

This study presents the clinical outcomes of using inhouse prepared fibrin glue for controlling gingival bleeding in patients with inherited bleeding disorders (IBD). The objective of the study was to assess the reduction in transfusion days and improvement in compliance for dental evaluation over a one-year period in a low-to-middle-income country. The quasiexperimental pilot study included 40 IBD patients with gingival bleeding. These were divided into two groups: Group A received fibrin glue (n=20), while Group B did not (n=20). The study compared outcome metrics, including the number of tr

Various synthetic materials and plastic adhesives are used for neurovascular decompression, but they may have some adverse effects on nervous tissue. We used fibrin glue alone for neurovascular decompression and obtained excellent results without complications or recurrence, compared with the previous technique with a prosthesis or plastic adhesive.

Fibrin glue patching can be an effective treatment for CSF-venous fistulas, along with transvenous embolization and surgical ligation.1,2 The technique differs from routine epidural patching, which is typically targeted in the dorsal or ventral epidural spaces. Instead, fibrin glue patching for CSF-venous fistulas is specifically targeted to the venous drainage pattern.3 There are 3 main locations to target: 1) the cyst-vein junction, 2) paravertebral "wall," and 3) direct cyst puncture, and the goal is to sever the connection between the cyst and vein. In this video, technical tips for succes

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Articles are getting published on the use of tissue adhesive for vesicovaginal fistula. The objective is to carry out a systematic review on their effectiveness and complications.
METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. Two reviewers screened abstracts and full-text and extracted data independently. A narrative synthesis was conducted given the heterogeneity of studies.
RESULTS: A total of 1032 studies were identified after searching the da

In haemostasis and thrombosis, platelet, coagulation and anticoagulation pathways act together to produce fibrin-containing thrombi. We developed a microspot-based technique, in which we assessed platelet adhesion, platelet activation, thrombus structure and fibrin clot formation in real time using flowing whole blood. Microspots were made from distinct platelet-adhesive surfaces in the absence or presence of tissue factor, thrombomodulin or activated protein C. Kinetics of platelet activation, thrombus structure and fibrin formation were assessed by fluorescence microscopy. This work revealed

Surgical dead spaces are challenging to handle with current preventive methods. Tissue adhesives show promise in obliterating 'dead spaces', but the drawbacks of currently available adhesives prevent them from being used for dead space elimination. An adhesive powder based on N-Hydroxysuccinimide-poly(2-oxazoline), NHS-POx, combines robust adhesive strength in moist environments with favorable biocompatibility and biodegradability, which makes this an interesting candidate for eliminating spaces that remain between tissues after surgery. The current study evaluates the swelling, crosslinking s

PURPOSE: To evaluate the fixation integrity at time zero of a type I/III collagen patch secured to a chondral defect in the porcine knee using methods typically employed in autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) and matrix-assisted chondrocyte implantation.
METHODS: Twenty-four porcine knee specimens underwent a medial parapatellar arthrotomy. A prefabricated template was used to create cartilage defects of 2 cm(2) in the medial femoral condyle. A size-matched collagen patch was fashioned. Four methods of fixation to the chondral defect were analyzed: group 1-saline, group 2-fibrin glue ar

BACKGROUND: Postoperative prolonged air leakage is a frequent complication after lung resection. We have developed a new sealant based on a hydrophobically modified Alaska pollock-derived gelatin (ApGltn) sealant. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the adhesive strength of the ApGltn sealant in comparison with a fibrin sealant using a new spray system in ex vivo and in vivo models.
METHODS: Pleural defects in ex vivo and in vivo porcine models were created, to which the ApGltn sealant or the fibrin sealant was applied. The pressure resistance was assessed with a stepwise increase in ai

Fibrin glue is increasingly used in the treatment of anal fistulae. This review aims to establish its longterm efficacy and clarify its role in this setting. A search of Medline and Pubmed databases was performed from 1966 to 2004. Data were collated regarding the type of study, fistula aetiology and complexity, technical aspects of glue application, and short- and long-term healing rates. The majority of studies comprised prospective series with fistulae of mixed aetiology. The overall healing rate was 53% with a wide variation between studies (10%-78%). The only factor that could account for

PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy, safety and recurrence rate of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) grafts and limbal conjunctival autografts (LCAs) following pterygium excision.
METHODS: A total of 108 patients (108 eyes) with primary pterygium were included in this study and were divided into group A (56 eyes) and group B (52 eyes). Patients in group A underwent excision of the pterygium followed by LCA while patients in group B underwent PRF grafts following pterygium excision. The PRF was produced using the patient's own whole-blood sample by centrifugation and extrusion. The surgery time, intraop

Vasculogenic assembly of 3D capillary networks remains a promising approach to vascularizing tissue-engineered grafts, a significant outstanding challenge in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Current approaches for vasculogenic assembly rely on the inclusion of supporting mesenchymal cells alongside endothelial cells, co-encapsulated within vasculo-conducive materials such as low-density fibrin hydrogels. Here, we established a material-based approach to circumvent the need for supporting mesenchymal cells and report that the inclusion of synthetic matrix fibers in dense (>3 mg mL-

Suturing peripheral nerve transections is the predominant therapeutic strategy for nerve repair. However, the use of sutures leads to scar tissue formation, hinders nerve regeneration, and prevents functional recovery. Fibrin-based adhesives have been widely used for nerve reconstruction, but their limited adhesive and mechanical strength and inability to promote nerve regeneration hamper their utility as a stand-alone intervention. To overcome these challenges, we engineered composite hydrogels that are neurosupportive and possess strong tissue adhesion. These composites were synthesized by p

Tissue adhesives have a long history of use in almost all surgical disciplines, both as an alternative and a complement to sutures. Nevertheless, ophthalmologists have restricted knowledge of their potential applications; consequently, tissue adhesives have been underutilized so far. This review discusses the most relevant clinical and experimental advances in the use of tissue adhesives in ophthalmology and details the characteristics and properties of the glues. Among the currently available adhesives, synthetic glues are mainly represented by cyanoacrylates and biologic glues by fibrin-base

Tissue adhesives can bind together damaged tissues and serve as tools to deliver and localize therapeutics to facilitate regeneration. One emerging therapeutic trend in orthopedics is the use of intraoperative biologics (IOB), such as bone marrow (BM) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP), to stimulate healing. Here, we introduce the application of the biomaterial chondroitin sulfate succinimidyl succinate (CS-NHS) to deliver IOB in a hydrogel adhesive. We demonstrate the biomaterial's ability to bind various tissue types and its cellular biocompatibility with encapsulated human mesenchymal stem cell
