Evolving Diverse Red-Team Language Models in Multi-Round Multi-Agent Games.

The primary challenge in deploying Large Language Model (LLM) is ensuring its harmlessness. Red team can identify vulnerabilities by attacking LLM to attain safety. However, current efforts heavily rely on single-round prompt designs and unilateral red team optimizations against fixed blue teams. These static approaches lead to significant reductions in generation diversity, known as the mode collapse, which makes it difficult to discover the potential risks in the increasingly complex human-LLM interactions. Here we introduce dynamic Red Team Game (RTG) to comprehensively analyze the multi-ro

Why human societies adopt rigid moral rules: The efficiency-robustness trade-off.

Humans are capable of remarkably flexible moral judgment. Yet societies rely on rigid rules-obligations and prohibitions that apply categorically, even when case-by-case reasoning could yield better outcomes. Why would a species capable of flexibility bind itself to rigid rules? We propose that rigid rules arise as social technologies for managing ambiguity about noncooperation. People often have legitimate reasons for failing to cooperate, yet those reasons are typically opaque to observers, allowing opportunists to disguise selfishness as justified hardship. We formalize this idea with a gam

Transboundary watershed pollution control analysis for pollution abatement and ecological compensation.

The effect of watershed environmental management is closely related to the cooperation modes of upstream and downstream regions pollution control, but the existing literature rarely considers it. Additionally, based on the cumulative and cross-border impacts of pollution discharge in different regions, it is appropriate to use dynamic game theory to study pollution control problems. Therefore, this paper develops a dynamic multi game model to analyze the pollution control game behavior between the upstream and downstream regions along the basin in three scenarios: non-cooperation, pollution ab…

The evolution of cooperation in spatial public goods game with conditional peer exclusion.

Social exclusion can prevent free riders from participating in social activities and deprive them of sharing cooperative benefits, which is an effective mechanism for the evolution of cooperation. However, traditional peer-exclusion strategies are unconditional, and as long as there are defectors in the group, they will pay a cost to exclude the defectors. In reality, one of the reasons for the complexity of these strategies is that individuals may react differently depending on the environment in which they are located. Based on this consideration, we introduce a kind of conditional peer-excl

Trends in robot-assisted and virtual reality-assisted neuromuscular therapy: a systematic review of health-related multiplayer games.

BACKGROUND: Multiplayer games have emerged as a promising approach to increase the motivation of patients involved in rehabilitation therapy. In this systematic review, we evaluated recent publications in health-related multiplayer games that involved patients with cognitive and/or motor impairments. The aim was to investigate the effect of multiplayer gaming on game experience and game performance in healthy and non-healthy populations in comparison to individual game play. We further discuss the publications within the context of the theory of flow and the challenge point framework. METHODS

Game played by tandem-running ants: Hint of procedural rationality.

Navigation during colony relocation by the tandem-running ants, Diacamma indicum, is a tour de force of biological traffic coordination, as this directly impact the survival and fitness of the whole colony. Even on one-lane paths, the ants tactfully manage a bidirectional flow: An informed individual (termed leader) guides one nest mate (termed follower) to a new optimal nest, and then returns to recruit additional followers (one follower at a time). We propose that encounters between the ants moving in opposite directions can be modeled within the framework of game theory, leading to an under…

Prosocial punishment bots breed social punishment in human players.

Prosocial punishment, an important factor to stabilize cooperation in social dilemma games, often faces challenges like second-order free-ri … cing cooperative behaviours in human/AI interactions. Our findings open new avenues in evolutionary game theory, demonstrating the potential of human-machine collaboration in solving the conundrum of punishment.

The dynamics of casual groups can keep free-riders at bay.

Understanding the conditions for maintaining cooperation in groups of unrelated individuals despite the presence of non-cooperative members is a major research topic in contemporary biological, sociological, and economic theory. The N-person snowdrift game models the type of social dilemma where cooperative actions are costly, but there is a reward for performing them. We study this game in a scenario where players move between play groups following the casual group dynamics, where groups grow by recruiting isolates and shrink by losing individuals who then become isolates. This describes the

Network rewiring promotes cooperation in an aspirational learning model.

We analyze a cooperative decision-making model that is based on individual aspiration levels using the framework of a public goods game in static and dynamic networks. Sensitivity to differences in payoff and dynamic aspiration levels modulates individual satisfaction and affects subsequent behavior. The collective outcome of such strategy changes depends on the efficiency with which aspiration levels are updated. Below a threshold learning efficiency, cooperators dominate despite short-term fluctuations in strategy fractions. Categorizing players based on their satisfaction level and the resu

Beneficial laggards: multilevel selection, cooperative polymorphism and division of labour in threshold public good games.

BACKGROUND: The origin and stability of cooperation is a hot topic in social and behavioural sciences. A complicated conundrum exists as defectors have an advantage over cooperators, whenever cooperation is costly so consequently, not cooperating pays off. In addition, the discovery that humans and some animal populations, such as lions, are polymorphic, where cooperators and defectors stably live together--while defectors are not being punished--, is even more puzzling. Here we offer a novel explanation based on a Threshold Public Good Game (PGG) that includes the interaction of individual an

Beyond replicator dynamics: From frequency to density dependent models of evolutionary games.

Game theoretic models of evolution such as the Hawk-Dove game assume that individuals gain fitness (which is a proxy of the per capita popul … phenotypes in the population. This raises the question of the applicability of classic evolutionary game theory that requires all interactions take the same amount of time and that all single individuals have the same payoff per unit of time, to real populations. Furthermore, by separating individual fitness into birth and death effects on singles and pairs, …

Social exclusion in finite populations.

Social exclusion, keeping free riders from benefit sharing, plays an important role in sustaining cooperation in our world. Here we propose two different exclusion regimes, namely, peer exclusion and pool exclusion, to investigate the evolution of social exclusion in finite populations. In the peer exclusion regime, each excluder expels all the defectors independently, and thus bears the total cost on his own, while in the pool exclusion regime, excluders spontaneously form an institution to carry out rejection of the free riders, and each excluder shares the cost equally. In a public goods ga

Governing the global commons with local institutions.

Most problems faced by modern human society have two characteristics in common--they are tragedy-of-the-commons type of problems, and they are global problems. Tragedy-of-the-commons type of problems are those where a commonly shared resource is overexploited by free riders at the expense of everyone sharing the resource. The exploitation of global resources such as clean air and water, political stability and peace, etc. underlies many of the most pressing human problems. Punishment of free riding behavior is one of the most frequently used strategies to combat the problem, but the spatial re

Reexamining the role of the description of problem texts in the disjunction effect.

M. Bagassi and L. Macchi (2006) demonstrated that through a pragmatic analysis and consequent reformulation of a task, the certainty vs. uncertainty condition is not a crucial factor to the disjunction effect. In addition, C. Lambdin and C. Burdsal (2007) argued that, given the defining characteristics of a disjunction effect, a between-subjects design does not allow for the conditions necessary for a disjunction effect to occur. In the present study, the authors reexamined the role of text's description in the disjunction effect using a within-subject experimental design rather than a between

Analysing public goods games using reinforcement learning: effect of increasing group size on cooperation.

Electricity competition, restrictions on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and arm races between nations are examples of social dilemmas within human society. In the presence of social dilemmas, rational choice in game theory leads to the avoidance of cooperative behaviour owing to its cost. However, in experiments using public goods games that simulate social dilemmas, humans have often exhibited cooperative behaviour that deviates from individual rationality. Despite extensive research, the alignment between human cooperative behaviour and game theory predictions remains inconsistent. This stud…

Voluntary vaccination strategy and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

In this work, we investigate the spread and control of sexually transmitted diseases when a game-theory based vaccination strategy is involved. An individual's decision on vaccination uptake may follow a cost-benefit analysis since the individual obtains immunity against the disease from the vaccination and, at the same time, may have some perceived side effects. Evolutionary game theory is integrated into the epidemic model to reveal the relationship between individuals' voluntary decisions on vaccination uptake and the spread and control of such diseases. We show that decreasing the perceive…

Conceptual framework for designing video games for children with type 1 diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: to present a theoretically based conceptual framework for designing video games for children with type 1 diabetes mellitus. METHODS: this was a methodological study that developed a conceptual framework with nine steps in view of health behavior change theories and the user-centered design approach as theoretical and methodological frameworks, respectively. Twenty-one children, aged 7 to 12 years, participated by expressing their needs and preferences related to diabetes and video games. Data were analysed following content analysis guidelines. Then, a choice of appropriate health

The Mediating Role of Gaming Disorder in the Effect of Narcissism on Happiness in Children.

We aimed to determine the relationship between gaming disorder, narcissism, and happiness levels of children between the ages of 9 and 15. This study was based on the compensation theory. The sample consists of 461 boys who continue their education in public schools in Istanbul. In the study, a mixed research design, which nests qualitative data into quantitative, was used. In addition to the scales and sociodemographic form, the Draw-a-Person test was also used to better understand children's inner world. According to the findings, there is a significant relationship between gaming disorder a

Getting less than their fair share: Maltreated youth are hyper-cooperative yet vulnerable to exploitation in a public goods game.

Human cooperative behavior has long been thought to decline under adversity. However, studies have primarily examined perceived patterns of cooperation, with little eye to actual cooperative behavior embedded within social interaction. Game-theoretical paradigms can help close this gap by unpacking subtle differences in how cooperation unfolds during initial encounters. This study is the first to use a child-appropriate, virtual, public goods game to study actual cooperative behavior in 329 participants aged 9-16 years with histories of maltreatment (n = 99) and no maltreatment (n = 230) while
