Hearing loss is one of the most common sensory impairments and affects almost 10% of the adult population. The percentage of adults with hearing loss markedly increases with advancing age. The differential diagnosis for patients presenting with hearing loss is extensive, but can often be narrowed with a directed hearing history and physical examination. The severity of the hearing loss may warrant additional diagnostic studies, including audiometry, and possible imaging in selected cases. Hearing aids, assistive listening devices, middle ear surgery, and cochlear implantation are potential the…

Hearing loss may be caused by either a conductive problem, such that the sound waves do not reach the tympanic membrane, ossicles or inner ear, or a sensorineural problem, in which the cochlea and/or auditory nerve are somehow damaged. A combination of the above may also occur. The various causes of hearing loss and the options in treatment will be presented.

Nearly 30 million Americans have hearing loss. Audiograms are used to determine if hearing loss is sensorineural (SNHL), conductive (CHL), or mixed (MHL). SNHL indicates dysfunction of the cochlea, cochlear nerve, or brain. The study of choice for adults with SNHL is gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging, which is used to look for acoustic neuromas, abnormal labyrinth signal intensity or enhancement, and brain disease. In children with SNHL, computed tomography (CT) performed with bone algorithms demonstrates inner ear dysplasias. SNHL from trauma is best evaluated with CT studies. CH…

OBJECTIVE: Despite previous research into the psychosocial impact of hearing loss, little detail is known regarding the hearing and hearing-aid-related emotional states experienced by adults with hearing loss in everyday life, and how they occur.
DESIGN: Individual remote semi-structured interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and qualitatively analysed with reflexive and inductive thematic analysis.
STUDY SAMPLE: Seventeen participants (9 female) with hearing loss (age range 44-74 years) participated. Ten used bilateral hearing aids, four unilateral and three used no hearing ai…

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is a common condition and there is a need to evaluate effects of tinnitus management in relation to moderating factors such as degree of hearing loss. As it is possible that tinnitus influences concentration, and thus is likely to disturb cognitive processing, the role of cognitive functioning also needs to be investigated.
PURPOSE: To compare a group of patients with sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus to a control group with only sensorineural hearing loss (and no tinnitus). To investigate working memory, sleep, and hearing problems measured before and after hearing…

OBJECT: No extant literature documents the analysis of patient perceptions of hearing as a corollary to objective audiometric measures in patients with vestibular schwannoma (VS), or acoustic neuroma. Therefore, using objective audiometric data and patient perceptions of hearing function as outlined on a questionnaire, the authors evaluated the hearing of patients who underwent VS resection.
METHODS: This investigation involved a retrospective review of 176 patients who had undergone VS resections in which hearing preservation was a goal. Both pre- and postoperative audiometry, expressed as a…

INTRODUCTION: Neonates undergo neonatal hearing screening to detect congenital hearing loss at an early stage. Once confirmed, it is necessary to perform an etiological workup to start appropriate treatment. The study objective was to assess the different etiologies, risk factors, and hearing results of infants with permanent hearing loss and to evaluate the efficacy and consequences of the different screening devices over the last 21 years.
METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort analysis for all neonatal hearing screening program referrals and performed an etiological wor…

OBJECTIVES: Premature infants are at high risk for hearing loss (HL). The aim of the present study is to assess the frequency of preterm infants affected by HL who experience hearing improvement over months and evaluate possible factors associated with hearing changes.
METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted in a third-level referral audiologic center. Preterm infants with a confirmed diagnosis of sensorineural HL within the first 3 months of life were reassessed at 18 months corrected age using the click-evoked auditory brainstem response between January 1, 2012, and June 30, 2020. OBJECTIVE: To assess the benefits of a new type of hearing aid using cartilage conduction (CC) in patients with severe conduction hearing loss and evaluate its potential for practical use.
STUDY DESIGN: Consecutive, prospective case series.
PATIENTS: Forty-one subjects (21 with bilateral aural atresia; 15 with unilateral aural atresia; and 5 others) participated in this study.
INTERVENTION: Fitting and gain adjustments of the CC hearing aids were performed to the ear(s) with conduction hearing loss.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The function gains were measured. Evaluation of the measurements of …

Acute lung injury (ALI) is a devastating inflammatory disease. In lungs with inflammation, microRNA155 (miR155) induces inflammatory cytokines by inhibiting the expression of suppressor of cytokine signaling-1 (SOCS1). In addition, glycyrrhizic acid (GA) has been suggested as an anti-inflammatory drug for ALI, since it is an efficient inhibitor of nuclear factor-κB. In this study, a combined delivery system of anti-miR155 oligonucleotides (AMO155) and GA was developed with R3V6 for the treatment of ALI. R3V6s formed comicelles with cholesterol-conjugated AMO155 (AMO155c) by charge and hydropho

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the causes of hearing loss found after failed universal newborn hearing screening and compared the results with the previously used behavioral observation test (Ewing/CAPAS).
STUDY DESIGN: Hearing loss in neonates, born between September 1999 and October 2007 and referred to our center after failed screening, was determined by audiologic testing and physical examination.
RESULTS: In 340 included neonates the results of hearing tests were as follows: normal hearing 21.2%, conductive hearing loss 20.3%, and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) 57.9%. Children referred from…

OBJECTIVE: This article describes the audiologic findings and medical status of infants who were found to have hearing loss, detected as part of the Identification of Neonatal Hearing Impairment (INHI) project. In addition, the neonatal and maternal health variables for the group of infants who could not be tested with visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA) due to developmental and visual disability are presented.
DESIGN: The overall goal of the INHI project was to evaluate the test performance of auditory brain stem response and evoked otoacoustic emission (OAE) tests given in the newborn per…

Conductive hearing loss, produced by otitis media with effusion, is widespread in young children. However, little is known about its short- or long-term effects on hearing or the brain. To study the consequences of a conductive loss for the perception and processing of sounds, we plugged the left ear canal of ferrets for 7-15 months during either infancy or adulthood. Before or during plugging, the ferrets were trained to perform a binaural task requiring the detection of a 500 Hz tone, positioned 90 degrees to the right, that was masked by two sources of broad-band noise. In one condition ("c…

The common form of hardness of hearing seen in old age is not, in the first instance, due to physiological age-related changes as is, for example, presbyopia, but rather to a complex sensorineural pattern of injury. The underlying causes are not yet fully understood. Typical medical risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, etc. apparently play a smaller role than increasing environmental noise and modern life styles. The various forms of presbyacusis and their presentation in the pure tone audiogram are discussed.

RATIONALE: This is an update of an existing review. The main clinical intervention for mild to moderate hearing loss is the provision of hearing aids, which amplify speech in addition to environmental sounds. Hearing aids are routinely offered and fitted to those who seek help for hearing difficulties. Since the previous 2017 review, further randomised-controlled trials (RCTs) have been published. This review updates the certainty of the evidence and assesses two additional outcomes: mental health and cognition.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits and harms of hearing aids in adults with mil…
