What is the character of N deposition and its proportion to NH3 and NOX inside horticultural greenhouse?

Nitrogen (N) deposition is a vital process of N cycling and is consequently important for the evaluation of N budgets. However, the character and quantity of N deposition inside the horticultural greenhouse remain unknown, impeding a deep understanding of N cycling among soil, vegetable and atmosphere. Here, we measured the dry and wet N deposition, and disentangled the relative percentages of ammonia (NH3) and nitrogen oxides (NOX) gases deposition based on the greenhouse vegetable cultivation experiment. Results found the annual N deposition, was 7.2-17.5 kg N·ha-1 under different chemical/o

Multiple pesticides occurrence, fate, and environmental risk assessment in a small horticultural stream of Argentina.

Peri-urban horticulture is crucial to local populations, but a global paucity of information exists regarding the contamination of the associated waterways because of this activity. The aim of this study was to assess pesticide pollution of surface water, suspended particulate matter and bottom sediments from the Carnaval Creek Basin (La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina) - a representative system of waterways surrounded by horticultural production - by over 40 selected herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides by gas-chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry and ultraperformance liquid chro…

Pesticide impact study in the peri-urban horticultural area of Gran La Plata, Argentina.

Vegetable production systems are characterized by intense pesticide use, yet the effects on the surrounding environment are largely unknown and need to be studied. Given this knowledge gap, the objective of this work is to determine the impact of horticulture on a representative watercourse by conducting an integrated study of the occurrence and concentration of pesticides in bottom sediments and their relation to lethal and sublethal effects on benthic fauna. Two sampling campaigns were conducted during seasons of low and high pesticide application in five sites along the Carnaval creek, loca…

Self-Management Strategies for Low Back Pain Among Horticulture Workers: Protocol for a Type II Hybrid Effectiveness-Implementation Study.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is highly prevalent and disabling, especially in agriculture sectors. However, there is a gap in LBP prevention and intervention studies in these physically demanding occupations, and to date, no studies have focused on horticulture workers. Given the challenges of implementing interventions for those working in small businesses, self-management offers an attractive and feasible option to address work-related risk factors and manage LBP. OBJECTIVE: This study will (1) investigate the effectiveness of self-management strategies for nursery and landscape workers …

Effectiveness of social and therapeutic horticulture for reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety are the two most common mental health conditions, that often co-exist and relapse over time. There is a need for sustainable treatment options to address increasing rates of depression and anxiety and reduce the strain on health systems. Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH) is a nature-based health intervention that can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, however synthesised evidence of its effectiveness is required to inform commissioning and availability of interventions. AIM: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine t…

Liquid Anaerobic Digestate as Sole Nutrient Source in Soilless Horticulture-Or Spiked With Mineral Nutrients for Improved Plant Growth.

Digestate from biogas production high in plant-available macro- and micro-nutrients could replace mineral fertilizer in protected (soilless) horticulture. Previous uses of digestate have shown that low concentrations of plant-available phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) may be limiting factors for growth when using digestate as the sole fertilizer. In this study, digestate collected from a municipal biogas plant in Sweden was nitrified in a moving-bed biofilm reactor prior to its use as fertilizer. A greenhouse pot trial with pak choi grown in peat-based growing medium was established to assess the…

UVR8-mediated UV-B signaling and its regulation of horticultural traits: from Arabidopsis to application.

Ultraviolet-B (UV-B, 280-315 nm) radiation acts as a key environmental signal that regulates plant development and acclimation responses. The UV-B photoreceptor UV RESISTANCE LOCUS 8 (UVR8) plays a central role in perceiving and transducing these signals. In the absence of UV-B, UVR8 exists predominantly as a homodimer in the cytoplasm. Upon UV-B absorption, UVR8 dissociates into active monomers that translocate to the nucleus, where they initiate downstream signaling via interactions with core regulatory components. In this review, we systematically elaborate on the UVR8-mediated UV-B signal

Roles of nitric oxide in improving post-harvest horticultural product quality: Crosstalk with hydrogen sulfide.

Postharvest quality maintenance is a key research focus in horticultural science. Nitric oxide (NO), a vital gaseous signaling molecule, significantly improves postharvest quality by inhibiting ethylene (ETH) synthesis, reducing respiration rate, enhancing antioxidant enzyme systems, maintaining cell wall integrity, and regulating secondary metabolism. Currently, the synergistic mechanisms between NO and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) have emerged as a research hotspot. The two molecules work in concert to delay postharvest senescence and enhance fruit resistance to low temperature and pathogens invol

Impacts of a Commercially Available Horticultural Oil Biopesticide (EF-400) on the Tomato-Phytophthora infestans Pathosystem.

Biopesticide fungicides are naturally derived compounds that offer protection from plant diseases through various modes of action, including antimicrobial activity and upregulation of defense responses in host plants. These plant protectants provide a sustainable and safe alternative to conventional pesticides in integrated disease management programs and are especially salient in the management of high-risk and economically important diseases such as late blight of tomato and potato, for which host resistance options are limited. In this study, a commercially available biopesticide, EF400 com

An overlooked horticultural crop, Smyrnium olusatrum, as a potential source of compounds effective against African trypanosomiasis.

Among natural products, sesquiterpenes have shown promising inhibitory effects against bloodstream forms of Trypanosoma brucei, the protozoan parasite causing human African trypanosomiasis (HAT). Smyrnium olusatrum (Apiaceae), also known as Alexanders or wild celery, is a neglected horticultural crop characterized by oxygenated sesquiterpenes containing a furan ring. In the present work we explored the potential of its essential oils obtained from different organs and the main oxygenated sesquiterpenes, namely isofuranodiene, germacrone and β-acetoxyfuranoeudesm-4(15)-ene, as inhibitors of Try

Contribution of soluble and particulate-matter fractions to the total glyphosate and AMPA load in water bodies associated with horticulture.

Glyphosate-based herbicides are used in horticulture to prepare the soil for planting and to remove weeds surrounding greenhouses. Superficial runoff from production units can lead to glyphosate reaching nearby water bodies. Previous publications reported glyphosate's high affinity for suspended solids. The aim of the present work was to investigate the occurrence and concentrations of glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in soluble and suspended-particulate-matter fractions within the basin of the Carnaval-Stream, a water body traversing a horticultural greenbelt. Glyphosate and A…

Eats roots and leaves. Can edible horticultural crops address dietary calcium, magnesium and potassium deficiencies?

Human individuals require at least 20 inorganic elements ('minerals') for normal functioning. However, much of the world's population is probably deficient in one or more essential minerals and at increased risk of physiological disorders. Addressing these 'hidden hungers' is a challenge for the nutrition and agriculture sectors. Mineral deficiencies among populations are typically identified from dietary surveys because (1) minerals are acquired primarily from dietary sources and (2) (bio)assays of mineral status can be unreliable. While dietary surveys are likely to under-report energy intak
