Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) were immobilized with one of the following drug combinations: ketamine/xylazine (n = 22), ketamine/promazine (n = 35), ketamine/midazolam (n = 13), or tiletamine/zolazepam (n = 22). A total of 226 patients with primary shoulder dislocation were followed up for 1 year, the primary object being to observe the effect of immobilization on the incidence of redislocation. BACKGROUND: The alterations in the endomysium and perimysium might cause compaction and gradual mechanical compression of cardiomyocytes resulting in their immobilization. This process finally leads to severe stiffening, so that the newly formed frame around individual cardiomyocytes and their clusters hinders normal diastole, and later systole. This phenomenon is referred to as immobilizing interstitial cardiac fibrosis (IICF). Deciphering the molecular and structural elements of myocardial changes is the key to understanding the pathogenetic foundations of heart failure development.

The feasibility of short-term immobilization for <5 min of female mice by methohexitone sodium was studied. In C3H/Neu mice, methohexitone at a dose <40 mg/kg did not result in chemical restraint, doses >50 mg/kg caused considerable lethality. Telazol (tiletamine hydrochloride and zolazepam hydrochloride combination) and a combination of ketamine hydrochloride and acepromazine were used to immobilize wild Ethiopian wolves (Canis simensis) in Ethiopia from 1988 to 1992. Telazol doses of 2.1 to 6.5 mg/kg resulted in a mean (+/- SD) induction time of 2.3 +/- 0.9 min and a mean (+/- SD) immobilization time of 82.2 +/- 28.6 min. Over a 5-year study period, 22 patients with isolated lower limb injuries who were immobilized in a plaster cast developed a pulmonary embolus. This information was not available from orthopaedic audit. Better cross-specialty accounting is required if complications that span different hospital specialties are to be fully elucidated. This problem was heightened by the number of emboli occurring while the patient was being treated as an outpatient.
