Classification of employment factors according to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health in patients with neuromuscular diseases: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: A systematic evaluation of the literature to identify health and contextual factors associated with employment in patients with neuromuscular diseases (NMD) and to perform a best evidence synthesis, taking into account the design of studies, methodological quality and the statistical significance of findings. METHOD: Publications were retrieved by a computerised search in medical and psychological databases. Two reviewers assessed titles and abstracts first and assessed the quality of the remaining full text publications independently as well. Of the residual publications, health and

Identifying patients with opioid use disorder using International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes: Challenges and opportunities.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: International Classification of Diseases (ICD) diagnosis codes are often used in research to identify patients with opioid use disorder (OUD), but their accuracy for this purpose is not fully evaluated. This study describes application of ICD-10 diagnosis codes for opioid use, dependence and abuse from an electronic health record (EHR) data extraction using data from the clinics' OUD patient registries and clinician/staff EHR entries. DESIGN: Cross-sectional observational study. SETTING: Four rural primary care clinics in Washington and Idaho, USA. PARTICIPANTS: 307 pat…

[Indicators of maternal and infant health: implications of the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases].

Since the end of the 1940s, when the World Health Organization assumed responsibility for the decennial revisions of the Classification of Causes of Death, the Classification came to include diseases and definitions of use in vital statistics, resulting in the Sixth International Classification of Diseases (ICD-6). The most recent revision of this work, the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10), is more significantly different than any revision since ICD-6, especially in the area of maternal and child health. Among the changes introduced in I…

Accuracy of an International Classification of Diseases Code Surveillance System in the Identification of Traumatic Brain Injury.

BACKGROUND: Use of International Classification of Disease (ICD) codes for traumatic brain injury (TBI) in healthcare administrative databases may underestimate the epidemiology of TBI. The present study examined the use of ICD-10 codes in a population-based New Zealand sample. METHODS: TBI related ICD-codes within the New Zealand health database were examined for all incident cases from a population-based TBI sample (n = 1,369). Impact of age, gender, ethnicity, presence/absence of skull fracture, where the case was located (i.e., hospital) on receipt of an ICD code was examined. RESULTS: I

Measuring accuracy of International Classification of Diseases codes in identification of patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis.

INTRODUCTION: Non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis is a disease which is increasing in incidence and prevalence worldwide. The incidence of the disease is frequently estimated using databases that rely on International Classification of Diseases, ninth and tenth revisions, clinical modification (ICD-9-CM/ICD-10-CM) discharge diagnoses. Code accuracy has proved to be a major issue for other diagnoses using ICD codes. This study aims to investigate the accuracy of the ICD codes for the diagnosis of non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis. METHODS: This is a retrospective diagnostic accuracy study whic…

Risk of Stroke After the International Classification of Diseases-Ninth Revision Discharge Code Diagnosis of Hypertensive Encephalopathy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although chronic hypertension is a well-established risk factor for stroke, little is known about stroke risk after hypertensive encephalopathy (HE), when neurologic sequelae of hypertension become evident. Therefore, we evaluated the risk of stroke after a diagnosis of HE. METHODS: We identified all patients discharged from California, New York, and Florida emergency departments and acute care hospitals between 2005 and 2012 with a primary International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Edition, Clinical Modification discharge diagnosis of HE (437.2). Patients dischar…

Accuracy of the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision Code Z51.5 for Identifying Subspecialty Pediatric Palliative Care.

We evaluated accuracy of International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision code Z51.5 in identifying subspecialty pediatric palliative care (SPPC) among decedents at a single center. The code showed excellent sensitivity (98.6%) and specificity (87.8%) for SPPC involvement. Z51.5 is a reliable proxy for SPPC in administrative data, supporting utility in pediatric research on end-of-life outcomes.

Classification of stillbirth by the International Classification of Diseases for Perinatal Mortality using a sequential approach: A 20-year retrospective study from Thailand.

AIM: The International Classification of Diseases for Perinatal Mortality (ICD-PM) is a system for recording causes of perinatal death. In this system, placental pathology is considered a "maternal condition" and this category does not cover the spectrum of placental pathology that can impact on perinatal death. The aim of the study was to apply a wider spectrum of placental pathology as a separate parameter for classifying death in the ICD-PM. METHODS: All autopsy reports at a single institution over a 20-year period (2001-2020) were reviewed. Causes of stillbirth were analyzed in a sequenti…

Predictive Value of International Classification of Diseases Codes for Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension in a University Health System.

BACKGROUND: Misclassification bias is introduced into medical claims-based research because of reliance on diagnostic coding rather than full medical record review. We sought to characterize this bias for idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) and evaluate strategies to reduce it. METHODS: A retrospective review of medical records was conducted using a clinical data warehouse containing medical records and administrative data from an academic medical center. Patients with 1 or more instances of International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-9 or -10 codes for IIH (348.2 or G93.2) between …

The global use of the International Classification of Diseases to Perinatal Mortality (ICD-PM): A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization launched the International Classification of Diseases for Perinatal Mortality (ICD-PM) in 2016 to uniformly report on the causes of perinatal deaths. In this systematic review, we aim to describe the global use of the ICD-PM by reporting causes of perinatal mortality and summarizing challenges and suggested amendments. METHODS: We systematically searched MEDLINE, Embase, Global Health, and CINAHL databases using key terms related to perinatal mortality and the classification for causes of death. We included studies that applied the ICD-PM and were pub…

Reliability of the proposed international classification of high-resolution computed tomography for occupational and environmental respiratory diseases.

PURPOSE: We have developed a classification of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) images for screening, surveillance and epidemiological studies of respiratory diseases caused by occupational and environmental factors. The proposed classification consists of three parts: a guideline explaining the elements of the classification scheme, a reading sheet, and reference films to aid in assessing thin-section CT films. We assessed the reliability of the proposed classification system by blinded, independent trial reading. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven independent radiologists and pulmonolog

Isolated subsegmental pulmonary embolism identification based on international classification of diseases (ICD)-10 codes and imaging reports.

BACKGROUND: Isolated subsegmental pulmonary embolism (issPE) is a commonly encountered diagnosis. Although the International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 codes are used for research, their validity for identifying issPE is unknown. Moreover, issPE diagnosis is challenging, and the findings from radiology reports may conflict with those from expert radiologists. METHODS: Based on prespecified criteria, 1734 medical records of adult patients hospitalized within the Mass General Brigham health system (2016-2021) were selected in three equal groups: (1) patients with principal discharge di…
