One hundred patients with tracheobronchial tumours were treated with the neodymium YAG (yttrium-aluminium-garnet) or argon laser for symptoms of airways obstruction caused by tumour (59 cases), complete collapse of a lung (17 cases), or recurrent haemoptysis (24 cases). BACKGROUND: Laser therapy is an important treatment option in retinal diseases, especially in cases of vascular involvement. Most approaches are based on coagulation of retinal structures. The eyes in two cases of extensive hyperplastic pupillary membranes with significant reduction of visual acuity and clarity were subjected to sectioning of the membranes in the superior 270 degrees of the pupil using a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. The complications of microhemorrhages, pigment dispersal, and elevation of intraocular pressure were insignificant, while the objective and subjective improvement in vision was remarkable.

In the palliative treatment of malignant esophageal stenosis endoscopic laser therapy and intracavitary radiation currently represent the best alternative. The results achieved with elimination of dysphagia, duration of the complaint-free interval, survival period, and complications are presented from a group of 167 patients. Referring to the quality of life, an evolving tendency towards the use of laser therapy instead of endoscopic intubation is reported.

Thirteen patients (9 women, 4 men) with anemia from acute and chronic gastrointestinal bleeding were found to have antral vascular disease consistent with watermelon stomach. The median age was 73 yr, with a range of 54-88 yr. Eight of the patients were transfusion-dependent, requiring a median of 5.5 U within the 12 mo before treatment. All were treated with endoscopic neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser coagulation. The effectiveness of the carbon dioxide laser was evaluated in the treatment of penile, anorectal, and urethral condylomata acuminata in 40 men. All but six cases of urethral condylomata were prior conventional treatment failures. Postlaser follow-up ranged between one and two years, with an average of 16 months. No patients were lost to follow-up. Postlaser recurrence rates were 7.5%. No postoperative complications occurred in this series. Carbon dioxide laser is highly successful for treating persistent and/or extensive urogenital and anal condylomata in the male patient.
