The definition of oral leukoplakia is presently under revision. Most authors do not include anymore the clinical conditions known as cheek and lip biting, frictional keratosis, actinic cheilitis, smoker's palate and other lesions attributed to tobacco, e.g., snuff dipper's lesion. An epidemiological review reveals a prevalence ranging from 0.2 to 11.7% among various population groups. As malignant transformation rate of leukoplakia increases up to 17.5% with time, there is a need for continued observations no matter how long the lesions have been present. Among the aetiological factors, smokin…

OBJECTIVE: There are limited data regarding the association and differentiation between proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) and unifocal verrucous leukoplakia (UVL).
METHODS: We retrospectively recruited oral leukoplakia (OL) patients from 2010 to 2024, analyzing the demographic, clinical, histopathological features, and malignant transformation of PVL and UVL.
RESULTS: Among 1756 OL subjects, PVL and UVL accounted for 1.88% and 1.54%, respectively, sharing features like similar age of onset and high dysplasia rates (57.58% vs 55.56%). However, significant differences still existed. Ge…

The article reports a case of oral proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (OPVL) in a 76-year-old woman, underscoring how an otherwise inconspicuous white plaque lesion can rapidly turn into a phase of verrucous carcinoma and subsequently squamous cell carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Leukoplakia (LKP) is defined as a white patch or plaque on the mucosa of oral cavity, vulva, vagina etc., which cannot be removed and cannot be clinically or microscopically explained by presence of a disease. LKP is included in the group of lesions with malignant potential.
MICROSCOPIC CHARACTERISTICS: Basic microscopic characteristics of oral LKP include hyperkeratosis of ortho- or parakeratotic type and acanthosis of the epithelium, with various degrees of chronic inflammatory infiltrates in lamina propria. Also, various degrees of epithelial dysplasia may occur. Some of the …

The authors report the first human case (to our knowledge) of infection of the oral mucosa by Dermatophilus congolensis. Septate branching filaments morphologically identical to those of D. congolensis were identified in the lingual epithelium of a male homosexual employed as an animal handler. This actinomycete is the cause of dermatophilosis, a proliferative exudative dermatitis affecting many animal species. Clinical features suggested "hairy" leukoplakia (HL), a hyperkeratotic tongue lesion for which human papillomavirus (HPV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) have been implicated as etiologic …

Vocal fold leukoplakia (VFL) is a descriptive term for a white plaque in the true vocal folds (TVF). It is estimated at 10.2 cases per 100,000 males and 2.1 per 100,000 females. The most critical aspect of managing a VLF is achieving an accurate pathological diagnosis, since a white plaque in the TVF can have numerous differential diagnoses. Patients with VFL usually complain of hoarseness and vocal strain. The common cause of VFL is premalignant lesions with primary risk factors of tobacco and alcohol consumption. Inflammatory aggressors such as laryngopharyngeal reflux disease are proven to …

Since the original description of oral hairy leukoplakia among homosexual men in San Francisco in 1984, this white lesion of the tongue has been seen in the mouths of persons infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) worldwide. Its presence in HIV-positive persons usually but not always indicates fairly rapid progression to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in the absence of antiretroviral therapy. Although the lesion appears to be common in HIV-positive persons, it is also, albeit rarely, seen in other conditions associated with immunosuppression. Epstein-Barr virus is associated …
