Effect of Network Structure on the Spread of Linguistic Behavior.

Theoretical and computational models predict that social-network topology shapes the diffusion of linguistic forms, yet direct experimental evidence remains limited. Across three laboratory experiments, we tested whether network structure or seed placement influences the spread of target lexical items, while holding task demands constant. Experiment 1 compared clustered (high-transitivity) and random (low-transitivity) 12-node networks (N = 120). Experiment 2 extended this design to larger 24-node networks (N = 240). Experiment 3 provided an exploratory follow-up on seed placement within clust

Linguistic equity: Anatomy educators and inclusive language.

Incorporating inclusive language in healthcare education allows learners to develop holistic communication skills. Adhering to principles of linguistic equity in healthcare, specific to sex- and gender-inclusive language (SGIL), creates a safe environment for all participants. Anatomy education introduces students to a standard, consistent language used in healthcare. This report presents data from the 2022 Experimental Biology conference roundtable discussion regarding the use of SGIL in anatomy education. Most of the respondents had defined sex (i.e. male/female; 83%) and gender (i.e. man/wo

A Dataset on Linguistic Connectivity Across and Within Countries.

We construct a new global dataset on common language. The data cover 242 countries and territories and are based on information about the speakers of 6,675 languages. Using data from Ethnologue, we provide 11 bilateral measures reflecting different dimensions of linguistic connections within and between countries, including common official languages, common native and acquired languages, and linguistic proximity across different languages. A key novelty of the dataset is that it includes consistently defined information on linguistic relationships not only between different countries but withi

Toward Linguistic Recognition of Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) refers to extreme, uncontrollable, and persistent worry and anxiety. The disorder is known to affect the social functioning and well-being of millions of people, but despite its prevalence and burden to society, it has proven difficult to identify unique behavioral markers. Interestingly, the worrying behavior observed in GAD is argued to stem from a verbal linguistic process. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate if GAD can be predicted from the language people use to put their anxious worries into words. Given the importance

Deep Mobile Linguistic Therapy for Patients with ASD.

Autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) is one of the most complex groups of neurobehavioral and developmental conditions. The reason is the presence of three different impaired domains, such as social interaction, communication, and restricted repetitive behaviors. Some children with ASD may not be able to communicate using language or speech. Many experts propose that continued therapy in the form of software training in this area might help to bring improvement. In this work, we propose a design of software speech therapy system for ASD. We combined different devices, technologies, and features wi

Linguistic markers predict onset of Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to use classification methods to predict future onset of Alzheimer's disease in cognitively normal subjects through automated linguistic analysis. METHODS: To study linguistic performance as an early biomarker of AD, we performed predictive modeling of future diagnosis of AD from a cognitively normal baseline of Framingham Heart Study participants. The linguistic variables were derived from written responses to the cookie-theft picture-description task. We compared the predictive performance of linguistic variables with clinical and neuropsychological vari

Bilingualism and Dementia: Cognitive Reserve to Linguistic Competency.

Despite the large number of elderly bilinguals at risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia worldwide, significant questions remain about the relationship between speaking more than one language and later cognitive decline. Bilingualism may impact on cognitive and neural reserve, time of onset of dementia symptoms and neuropathology, and linguistic competency in dementia. This review indicates increased cognitive reserve from executive (monitoring, selecting, inhibiting) control of two languages and increased neural reserve involving left frontal and related areas for language control. Linguistic effect on speech perception observed at the brainstem.

Linguistic experience affects speech perception from early infancy, as previously evidenced by behavioral and brain measures. Current research focuses on whether linguistic effects on speech perception can be observed at an earlier stage in the neural processing of speech (i.e., auditory brainstem). Brainstem responses reflect rapid, automatic, and preattentive encoding of sounds. Positive experiential effects have been reported by examining the frequency-following response (FFR) component of the complex auditory brainstem response (cABR) in response to sustained high-energy periodic portions

Cultural and linguistic validation of acne-QoL in French.

BACKGROUND: Acne-Quality of Life (acne-QoL) is a facial acne-specific quality-of-life instrument developed in English. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to translate and validate acne-QoL in French and to establish the reliability and responsivity of this measure. METHODS: Acne-QoL was translated into French (acne-QoLfr) in accordance with international methodological recommendations. The validated French version of the Cardiff Acne Disability Index (CADIfr) was used as a comparator. Acne patients in Quebec (n = 20) and France (n = 14) completed the acne-QoLfr and CADIfr on three occasions over 3

Clinician-child interactions: adjustments in linguistic complexity.

PURPOSE: This pilot study examined the extent and nature of associations in the linguistic complexity used by child and clinician within conversational interactions. METHOD: Correlation analyses focused on semantic and morphosyntactic language sample measures from an experienced speech-language clinician and 29 children with language impairment. RESULTS: Positive associations emerged between a variety of child and clinician measures, even when the effect of child age was removed. The most robust effect related to clinician adjustments in both morphosyntactic complexity and vocabulary diversi

The pre-linguistic autism diagnostic observation schedule.

The Pre-Linguistic Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (PL-ADOS) is a semistructured observation scale designed for use as a diagnostic tool for children less than 6 years old who are not yet using phrase speech and are suspected of having autism. The PL-ADOS takes approximately 30 minutes to administer and is appropriate for use with this population because of its emphasis on playful interactions and the use of toys designed for young children. Reliability studies indicated that both individual activity ratings and summary ratings could be reliably scored from videotaped assessments by nai

Linguistic abilities in children with Williams-Beuren syndrome.

In recent studies children with Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) have been characterized as having a distinct neuropsychological profile with verbal abilities being superior to visuo-spatial and motor skills. An unusual command of language, including excessive use of verbal stereotypes, social phrases, and clichés has been noticed. The aim of this study is to establish whether the quality and quantity of verbal behavior, and the articulation and tonal quality of the voices of children with WBS differ from other children with nonspecific developmental disabilities. A group of 25 children with WBS

Linguistic dimensions of affect and thought in somatization disorder.

DSM-III has established diagnostic criteria that separate somatization disorder from other overlapping symptom configurations. Nevertheless, information regarding the experience of somatization disorder is far from complete. Terms such as "masked depression" or "alexithymia" imply that a disturbance of affect is a central but guarded issue for at least some somatizing patients. Through content analysis of speech, the authors investigated the self-experience of somatization disorder in relation to affective disorder. Rather than defended depression, a distinctive characteristic found in the lan

From acoustic to linguistic analysis of temporal speech structure: Acousto-linguistic transformation during speech perception using speech quilts.

Speech perception entails the mapping of the acoustic waveform to linguistic representations. For this transformation to succeed, the speech signal needs to be tracked over various temporal windows at high temporal precision in order to decode linguistic units ranging from phonemes (tens of milliseconds) to sentences (seconds). Here, we tested the hypothesis that cortical processing of speech-specific temporal structure is modulated by higher-level linguistic analysis. Using fMRI, we measured BOLD signal changes to 4 s long speech quilts with variable temporal structure (30, 120, 480, 960 ms s

When Tech Meets Touch: Multistakeholder Perspectives and Implementation Strategies for eHealth in Chronic Kidney Disease: A Systematic Review Using Computational Linguistics.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease heavily burdens patients and health systems. Digital health interventions offer significant potential but face implementation challenges driven by stakeholders' emotional and practical experiences. This review synthesizes these affective dimensions to inform clinical practice. METHODS: A qualitative systematic review was conducted across six databases for studies published through April 2025. Methodological quality was rigorously appraised. We integrated Python-based computational sentiment analysis to quantify stakeholder emotional polarity (positive, negat

Combining Topic Modeling, Sentiment Analysis, and Corpus Linguistics to Analyze Unstructured Web-Based Patient Experience Data: Case Study of Modafinil Experiences.

BACKGROUND: Patient experience data from social media offer patient-centered perspectives on disease, treatments, and health service delivery. Current guidelines typically rely on systematic reviews, while qualitative health studies are often seen as anecdotal and nongeneralizable. This study explores combining personal health experiences from multiple sources to create generalizable evidence. OBJECTIVE: The study aims to (1) investigate how combining unsupervised natural language processing (NLP) and corpus linguistics can explore patient perspectives from a large unstructured dataset of mod…

Linguistic integration improves refugee physical and mental health.

Based on existing evidence, refugees have considerably poorer health outcomes relative to other immigrants and the native-born population. Little is known, however, on what works to achieve improvements in refugees' health. Using a unique longitudinal survey from Australia, this paper shows that linguistic integration is an important marker of health among the refugee population. In particular, linguistically integrated refugees have significantly better physical and mental health outcomes, relative to their linguistically marginalized counterparts. Our analysis additionally highlights the sig

Linguistic-grammar profile of Polish patients with anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The process of diagnosing and treating anorexia is fraught with many challenges. Physiologically unstable patient status in the first period of treatment, the barrier between patient-therapist, and patient's resistance constitute an essential negative element in accurate diagnosis and appropriate therapy selection. For this reason, there was a need to create a tool using elements of natural language processing to support the psychologist's work in the diagnostic process to verify and validate the expert hypotheses. METHODS: The research proposed that linguistic-gramm
