BACKGROUND: Educational technology (EdTech) has been instrumental in the last few decades in promoting inclusive education by overcoming various learning barriers and offering tools and opportunities to all students, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). However, there is limited understanding of current classroom practices and policies and of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on EdTech use in the inclusive classroom.
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to outline the current knowledge on the use of EdTech to support the learning of students with SEND i

BACKGROUND: Universal design for learning (UDL) is a framework that provides guidelines to support children with diverse needs in the classroom and promotes inclusion of all children. Although UDL is recognized as a promising approach for school-based rehabilitation health professionals (RHPs), there are no studies that synthesize evidence on the use of UDL by RHPs in the school setting. Therefore, the research question for this study is: How is UDL described and implemented in school settings by RHPs? This study specifically examined literature from occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and sp

This article reports two major data collection efforts conducted during successive years. Study 1 examined the relationship between the school effectiveness variables identified in the Minnesota Educational Effectiveness Project (MEEP), and the attitudes and achievement of students in 31 MEEP schools. Study 2, which focused on 11 of the Study 1 schools, compared the instructional programs provided to students with mild disabilities in three integrated programs in these 11 schools, with those provided by conventional resource "pull-out" programs in three other schools. We not only contrasted pr

This article explores the interpreter's role and approaches to working with deaf students as seen from deaf individuals' and interpreters' perspectives. A group of 41 formerly mainstreamed deaf individuals and interpreters offered insights into how the interpreter's role in mainstream classrooms influences deaf student autonomy and participation. This research illustrates the significance of autonomy for mainstreamed deaf students and suggests a correlation between the interpreter's role and deaf students' perceived autonomy in the classroom. In addition, the findings suggest that deaf student

Reading achievement among deaf students typically lags significantly behind hearing peers, a situation that has changed little despite decades of research. This lack of progress and recent findings indicating that deaf students face many of the same challenges in comprehending sign language as they do in comprehending text suggest that difficulties frequently observed in their learning from text may involve more than just reading. Two experiments examined college students' learning of material from science texts. Passages were presented to deaf (signing) students in print or American Sign Lang

Our study aimed at comparing, over a period of 3 years, the effectiveness of three different educational approaches addressed to children with autism and severe mental retardation. The first one was a treatment and education of autistic and related communication handicapped children (TEACCH) program implemented in a residential center; the second was a TEACCH program implemented at home and at mainstream schools, after a specific parent psychoeducational training; the third approach referred to inclusive education in mainstream schools, in which a nonspecific approach was implemented. Each sub

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to check a simple sampling and easy gas analysis of tobacco smoke for effective tobacco intervention in medical education.
METHODS: The mainstream of tobacco smoke was sampled by a syringe (50 ml) at five, ten and twenty seconds. The extracted mainstream was moved to a commercial PET bottle (2000 ml), and measured with gas detector tubes. The sidestream, which rises from the tip of the cigarette, was collected into a commercial PET bottle for a duration of 30 or 60 seconds. The Durham County Policy Document on Specific Learning Difficulties (dyslexia and dyspraxia) has been developed over a period of years as a countywide response to ensure that children's specific learning difficulties are identified and that schools are equipped to offer a range of appropriate interventions. The content of the policy document is studied in depth along with the training programmes offered by the Learning Support Service and Educational Psychology Service that will support schools in putting the policy into practice. Future developments, including an exciting project on promoting

The present contribution builds on the author's experience, is however not intended solely as a review, but sets out some approaches and suggestions pertaining to three areas which, in the author's view, belong to the problematic issues in the life of ill and disabled persons in our society. These are: the deficits in rehabilitation; the importance of talking with disabled or ill persons; and the educational integration of disabled children with its present possibilities and limits. Perhaps the views and suggestions set out can contribute to introducing a more everyday problem orientation into

As medical, nursing, and allied health programs integrate complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) content into existing curricula, they face many of the same challenges to assessment and evaluation as do more traditional aspects of health professions education, namely, (1) specifying measurable objectives, (2) identifying valid indicators, and (3) evaluating the attainment of desired outcomes. Based on the experiences of 14 National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) education grant recipients funded between 2000 and 2003, the authors cite selected examples to illus

This study examined the social and academic implications of mainstream, mainstream and special (combined) or special-class education for 31 adolescents with spina bifida, and for their primary caretakers. The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and the UCLA Loneliness Scale (adolescents) and the Personality Inventory for Children (caretakers) were administered. Adolescents in mainstream classes had the most normal scores for academic and social skills, those in combined classes had intermediate scores and those in special classes had the lowest scores. Paradoxically, adolescents in combined classe

The implementation of mainstream germline genetic testing in breast cancer patients has both benefits and challenges. Multiple aspects need to be considered for the outline of gene panels and the amount of pre-test genetic counselling. Mainstream genetic testing is mainly performed to stratify patients for targeted treatment. In addition, identification of germline pathogenic variants in cancer risk genes may have surgical implications, consequences for surveillance of other organs at risk of cancer, as well as family implications among relatives at risk. To ensure that patients are well infor

Article 24 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) calls for inclusive education systems. Despite this mandate, collaboration between schools and specialized services often remains limited. This study examined the systemic conditions that enable effective inclusion, extending beyond pedagogical approaches through a complexity-informed framework. Using a realist evaluation, the research investigated an innovative inclusive education initiative implemented in the Eure-et-Loir district in France for children and young people with neurodevelopmental dis

The earliest studies dating back to the 1950s have tended to present a more pessimistic view of the psychosocial aspects of JRA patients. More carefully designed studies, however, have shown that these children do not have unique personality characteristics, nor are they necessarily socially maladjusted. Stress may play some role in onset of exacerbation of the disease, although this role is unclear at present. The child's level of cognitive development probably does play a role in the perception of pain and should be considered when undertaking patient education. The long-term psychosocial ou
