Until now, the demonstration of cervical root pockets after root avulsion by means of the oily contrast medium Pantopaque has been considered to be the method of choice. 65 patients with nerve root compression syndrome were examined using a new type of MR-technique, which is comparable to the conventional X-ray myelography. CT myelography (CTM) and conventional myelography were reviewed in 18 cases of birth palsy with clinically suspected avulsion injury. A traumatic meningocele was detected in 45 roots by CTM, and in 35 roots by myelography. CTM misinterpreted only one root with a very small meningocele. Fifty dogs showing clinical signs of spinal disease were investigated by myelography, using iopamidol. In 27 cases the technique was considered worthwhile. Of the 19 dogs not subjected to surgery or euthanasia as a result of the findings, three suffered seizures during recovery from anaesthesia, eight deteriorated in neurological condition and one suffered permanent respiratory arrest as a result of extensive subarachnoid haemorrhage.

The use of myelography in obstetric palsies of brachial plexus is aimed at diagnosing root avulsion. This kind of lesion appears as the disappearance of the slightly transparent nerve roots which might be combined either with pseudomeningocele or with deformation of radicular pouch. In our study we considered 69 operated patients who had previously undergone myelography. In 74.2% of cases myelographic findings were confirmed at surgery. In order to assess the predictive value of pain drawings of sciatic pain, 81 patients admitted because of symptoms and signs of lumbar disc herniation were asked to chart their pain on a schematic body drawing prior to myelography. There were no differences in sexes, ages, or pain duration between the group of 37 patients with a herniated lumbar disc compared to the 44 patients with a normal myelogram. To evaluate the width of the spinal canal when diagnosing spinal stenosis, 91 patients older than 59 years of age when undergoing myelography were studied. Computed tomographic myelography (CTM) is the procedure of choice in patients exhibiting spinal manifestations of neurofibromatosis. The authors analyse the results of examination of 96 patients with administration of a new water-soluble radiopaque medium amipak (metrisamide) into the ventricles of the brain (22 cases) and subarachnoid space of the spinal cord (74 cases). The initial experiences with metrizamide (Amipaque) in cases of spinal dysraphism are described. The technique, myelographic appearance and adverse reactions are discussed. The results have been promising and it is believed that this contrast medium will provide more accurate diagnostic information.
