Anxiety and harmful oral habits in preschool children during the 2020 first-wave COVID‑19 lockdown in Turkey.

BACKGROUND: Due to curfew and quarantine practices designed to reduce the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‑19), social isolation ha … ed by the parents in these children. It was observed that the habits of finger sucking (p = 0.010), nail biting (p = 0.040) and lip biting (p = 0.010) that were present before the curfew decreased significantly after the curfew. CONCLUSIONS: Children aged 3-7 years can develop anxiety about physical injuries and about being separated from their parents as we …

Initial psychometrics, outcomes, and correlates of the Repetitive Body Focused Behavior Scale: Examination in a sample of youth with anxiety and/or obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs), including skin-picking, hair-pulling, and nail-biting, commonly occur in youth, even at elevated/problematic levels, and are associated with a number of other psychiatric symptoms. The present study examined the internal consistency of a brief screening tool for BFRBs as well as the prevalence, severity, and correlates of BFRBs in a sample of youth with a primary anxiety or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). METHODS: Ninety-three youth-parent dyads presenting for treatment for anxiety or OCD completed study measures including the Repeti

Bitten to the Bone: A Case of Anxiety-Induced Osteomyelitis.

Onychophagia is a habitual nail-biting disorder, usually associated with mental or emotional diseases. It affects 20-30% of the population in all age groups. Human bites have the potential to become serious injuries due to high virulence in the human oral flora and may often require hospital admission, antibiotics and even debridement in the operating room. Thus, repetitive nail biting has the potential to be limb-threatening if not treated early and appropriately. We present a 49-year-old Spanish-speaking gentleman, with a past medical history of repetitive nail biting secondary to severe anx…

Prevalence and Contributing Factors of Mandibular Labial Gingival Recession in Patients With Lingual Orthodontic Retainers: A Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence and contributing factors of mandibular labial gingival recession in patients with fixed lingual orthodontic retainers. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 83 post-orthodontic patients with fixed lingual retainers. Labial gingival recession was assessed on the lower incisors and classified using Cairo's Recession Type system. Clinical parameters were collected, including bleeding on probing, biofilm, brushing habits and oral hygiene behaviours. Logistic regression was used to analyse factors associated with recession. RESULTS: Labial gingival

Nervous habits and stereotyped behaviors in preschool children.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the frequency, age trends, and situational correlates of nervous habits (e.g., nail-biting, thumb-sucking) and motor stereotyped behaviors (e.g., body-rocking) in typically developing preschool children. METHOD: Data were compiled from 100 teacher interviews and 32 parent interviews on children aged 3 to 6 years. A semistructured, individually administered interview was used. RESULTS: Parents reported the most behaviors, with the most common behaviors being thumb-sucking (25%) and nail-biting (23%). Motor stereotypies demonstrated a frequency of 4% as reported by the te

An Update on the Disappearing Nail Bed.

BACKGROUND: The nail bed may epithelialize and develop dermatoglyphics after long-standing onycholysis. We have called this phenomenon the disappearing nail bed (DNB). DNB may present as a shortened or narrow nail bed. METHODS: Examination of all 20 nails was performed in each patient enrolled to the study. DNB was defined as the presence of a nail which is at least 20% shorter and/or narrower than the identical nail on the opposite hand or foot. Age, sex, and nail history were recorded. Fungal studies were done on all patients with DNB if that nail exhibited clinical signs of onychomycosis.

Oral parafunctions as temporomandibular disorder risk factors in children.

Oral parafunctions are generally considered to be important factors in the etiology of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and many reports have been published about their prevalence in adults and schoolchildren. However, few have included significant numbers of children below the age of 7. The aim of this study was to examine the association between parafunctions and oral/facial TMD-related pain in preschool children. Bruxism, nail biting, and thumb sucking were found to be significantly associated with important oral/facial pain symptoms of clinical interest in the diagnoses of TMD indicating…

Narrative Review of Internet-Based Self-Help Tools for Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors: Recommendations for Clinical Practice.

INTRODUCTION: Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), such as skin-picking, hair-pulling, and nail-biting, impair quality of life (QOL). While habit reversal training (HRT) is effective, access is often limited. Internet-based self-help interventions offer an alternative, improving accessibility for patients unable to attend in-person therapy. METHODS: We reviewed randomized controlled trials analyzing self-help or internet-based interventions for BFRBs in adults. PubMed searches yielded 1033 studies, 12 of which met the inclusion criteria, focusing on self-guided interventions for various

INTRODUCTION: Our aims in this study were to determine the prevalence of malocclusion stemming from vertical or transversal occlusal alterations in subjects with Down syndrome (DS) and the associations with individual, socioeconomic, and behavioral factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out with 112 pairs of mothers and their children with DS between 3 and 18 years of age attending a genetics clinic at a public hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Association between Child Abuse and Poor Oral Habits in Mongolian Adolescents.

(1) This study aimed to investigate the association between child abuse and oral habits in adolescents in Mongolia. (2) A cross-sectional survey was conducted with children and their caregivers in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Parents of 770 children enrolled in two public schools in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, completed questionnaires regarding the physical and psychological abuse that their children were subjected to and the presence of poor oral habits (biting nails/lips/pens and bruxism). Prevalence and correlates of clinically significant body-focused repetitive behaviors in a non-clinical sample.

BACKGROUND: Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) are repetitive, ritualized behaviors focused on the body, involving compulsively damaging one's physical appearance or causing physical injury. They include skin picking, hair pulling, nail biting, and lip or cheek biting and chewing. This study sought to examine prevalence, clinical correlates and quality of life (QoL) impairment associated with these conditions in a non-clinical sample of adults. METHOD: An online survey was completed by N = 1378 participants. Comparisons were made between those self-reporting body-focused repetitive beh…

Historical reports from owners and shelter staff included house-soiling, biting behavior, repelling behavior, barbering, lameness, chronic digit infection and nail regrowth. All the cats had fragments of the third phalanx (P3) of varying sizes diagnosed on radiographs. Pathology visible on examination included digital subcutaneous swelling, ecchymosis, malaligned digital pads, ulcerations, exudate, tendon contracture, nail regrowth

BACKGROUND: Onychophagia is a common disorder affecting 20% to 30% of the general population. It is defined as habitual nail biting and can cause various changes in the nail units. However, to date, there has been a paucity of data focusing on nail deformities related to onychophagia. This study was performed to investigate the clinical characteristics of onychophagia in Korea.
