What is a standard temporal lobectomy? A survey of epilepsy neurosurgeons.

OBJECTIVE: Anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) is the most common surgical procedure used to treat drug-resistant epilepsy. ATL fundamentally involves removal of the anterior temporal neocortex and mesial structures; however, there may be substantial variability in resection extent across surgeons. The objective of this study was to evaluate the practice patterns and ATL surgical techniques of epilepsy surgeons. METHODS: An anonymous REDCap-based survey of epilepsy neurosurgeons was conducted to collect demographic and resection data. Resection extent was assessed by asking participants to draw

Zahra TAATI ASIL The first Iranian Woman Neurosurgeon.

It is crucial to promote the role of women in surgery, particularly in the field of neurosurgery, which is still predominantly male-dominated. Without recognition and support, these talented and pioneering women may continue to be overlooked, despite their significant contributions to the field. One such remarkable woman is Professor Zahra Taati Asil, the first female Iranian neurosurgeon. Born in 1954 in Iran, she graduated from medical school in Tehran in 1978 with a degree in General Medicine. After completing her studies at the Medical School of the Melli University in 1983, she became the

Progress in neurosurgery: Contributions of women neurosurgeons in Asia and Australasia.

At the end of the first 100 years of neurosurgery as a specialty, it is appropriate to look back and then imagine the future. As neurosurgery celebrates its first century, the increasing role of women neurosurgeons is a major theme. This article documents the early women pioneers in neurosurgery in Asia and Australasia. The contributions of these trailblazers to the origins, academics, and professional organizations of neurosurgery are highlighted. The first woman neurosurgeon of the region, Dr. T.S. Kanaka of India, completed her training in 1968, not long after the trailblazers in Europe and

Case update on cranial osteopetrosis: which is the role of the neurosurgeon?

PURPOSE: Osteopetrosis (OP) is a rare skeletal disease, which can affect the skull base and calvaria. A multidisciplinary approach is mandatory and patient may need neurosurgical care. Few observations have been published, and optimal management of OP is not established yet. METHOD: We report a case of an infant with OP diagnosed at 5 months, who presented signs of intracranial hypertension associated with unilateral blindness. Bone marrow allograft was performed at 6 months of age. At neurosurgical first examination at 11 months, the child was hypotonic, with severe amblyopia; features of bi

Milena Auretta Rosso first female Italian neurosurgeon.

Although the representation of women in the field of surgery is on the rise, significant challenges remain in achieving gender equality, particularly in neurosurgery, a domain that has historically been dominated by men until relatively recently. The advancements made in this area owe much to trailblazing women like Milena Auretta Rosso, who holds the distinction of being Italy's first female neurosurgeon. It is crucial to acknowledge their contributions, careers, and the adversities they faced in pursuit of their ambitions. Born in 1943 in Genoa, Italy, Rosso graduated with honors in General

A systematic review of intradural disk herniation: A neurosurgeon's perspective.

Intradural disk herniation (IDH) refers to the protrusion of the nucleus pulposus into the dural sac. While disk herniation is a relatively frequent condition, the intradural variant is exceptionally rare. Patients diagnosed with IDH often exhibit more pronounced clinical symptoms compared to those with extradural herniations. Establishing a definitive preoperative diagnosis remains challenging, as the pathophysiology and radiological features are not yet fully understood. Differentiating IDH from other intradural extramedullary pathologies, including schwannomas, neurofibromas, meningiomas, o

Using robotics to move a neurosurgeon's hands to the tip of their endoscope.

A major advantage of surgical robots is that they can reduce the invasiveness of a procedure by enabling the clinician to manipulate tools as they would in open surgery but through small incisions in the body. Neurosurgery has yet to benefit from this advantage. Although clinical robots are available for the least invasive neurosurgical procedures, such as guiding electrode insertion, the most invasive brain surgeries, such as tumor resection, are still performed as open manual procedures. To investigate whether robotics could reduce the invasiveness of major brain surgeries while still provid

Migration intentions among nigerian neurosurgeons: a national survey of workforce retention.

Physician emigration from low- and middle-income countries creates critical workforce shortages. This study explored factors influencing migration intentions among Nigerian neurosurgeons and trainees. We conducted an anonymized survey of consultant neurosurgeons, fellows, and residents practicing in Nigeria. Invitations were sent by email and professional messaging platforms, and snowball sampling was used to increase participation. The survey included quantitative and open-ended questions on demographics, income, migration plans, and retention factors. Seventy-nine respondents participated (6

Intraoperative Ultrasound an Economical Tool for Neurosurgeons: A Single-Center Experience.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, the use of intraoperative image guidance in neurosurgery has gradually gained in importance. Apart from some sophisticated and very expensive techniques, intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) is a simple and economical technique that allows the surgeon to localize deep-seated lesions under a real-time ultrasonic image display without dissection. The purpose of this study was to present our own preliminary experiences in various (n=1250) neurosurgical procedures carried out at our tertiary care centre in a developing country. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A Prospective st

A low cost dural closure simulation model for tomorrow's spinal neurosurgeons.

Introduction: We present a low cost model that can be used to improve a trainee's skills in spinal dural closure. Development of microsurgical skills in a simulated environment provides a safe environment in which patients are protected. We argue that this is likely to improve the quality of dural closure, especially for surgeons early in their training and may lead to a commensurate reduction in post-operative CSF leak. Method: In our model, two consultant spine surgeons assessed the ability of participants to close the spinal dura. Participants were scored both quantitatively (time taken to

Clinical potential of meningioma genomic insights: a practical review for neurosurgeons.

Meningiomas are among the most common intracranial pathological conditions, accounting for 36% of intracranial lesions treated by neurosurgeons. Although the majority of these lesions are benign, the classical categorization of tumors by histological type or World Health Organization (WHO) grade has not fully captured the potential for meningioma progression and recurrence. Many targeted treatments have failed to generate a long-lasting effect on these tumors. Recently, several seminal studies evaluating the genomics of intracranial meningiomas have rapidly changed the understanding of the dis
