Pentalogy of Fallot in a captive Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica).

A 2-yr-old male Siberian Tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) died during a fight with a conspecific. At necropsy, significant abnormalities included severe cardiomegaly with cardiac malformations consisting of a large atrial septal defect, a membranous ventricular septal defect, overriding aorta, and stenosis of the pulmonary valve with secondary concentric hypertrophy of the right ventricle. Endocardiosis of the mitral valve was also noted. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of a pentalogy of Fallot in a large felid that resulted in sudden death.

Tungiasis in a free-ranging jaguar (Panthera onca) population in Brazil.

Tungiasis is an ectoparasitic disease caused by fleas of the genus Tunga. The disease is reported to occur mostly in human populations. In wildlife, however, the occurrence and impact of this disease remains uncertain. We captured and examined 12 free-ranging jaguars for the presence of Tunga penetrans in the Pantanal region of Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. Tungiasis prevalence was 100% in the population; lesions were confined to the jaguar's paws. T. penetrans was identified based on the characteristics of the embedded fleas and the morphological identification of a collected free-living

The jaguar (Panthera onca) as a potential new host of Dracunculus sp.

Nematode species of the genus Dracunculus (Spirurida: Dracunculoidea) infect tissues and body cavities of reptiles, domestic and wild carnivores, and humans. The definitive hosts acquire the infection by ingesting intermediate (i.e., cyclopoid copepod) or paratenic (i.e., amphibians and fishes) hosts. Here we report the jaguar (Panthera onca) as a potential new host for Dracunculus sp. The nematode was collected from an ulcerated cutaneous nodule on the left anterior limb of a female jaguar in the municipality of Miranda, Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. Based on the morphology of first stage

Eumycetoma Caused by Madurella pseudomycetomatis in a Captive Tiger (Panthera tigris).

A captive-kept adult male tiger presented with a large cutaneous and subcutaneous mass on the thigh with a fistula. During sedation, multiple nodules were detected and samples for a histopathological exam were collected. Histologically, granulomatous panniculitis and dermatitis were seen around dense aggregates of pigmented fungal hyphae, and a diagnosis of phaeohyphomycosis was made; considering the clinical features, it was classified as a eumycotic mycetoma. This is a rarely reported subcutaneous fungal infection in humans and animals, caused by dematiaceous fungi. Clinically, it is charact

INTERVERTEBRAL DISC DISEASE IN THREE LARGE FELIDS (PANTHERA SPP.) TREATED SURGICALLY.

Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) in captive large felids is a commonly encountered syndrome that is usually treated medically, with surgical cases only sparsely documented in the literature. This case series describes the diagnosis, surgical treatment, and postoperative care of three cases of IVDD in large felids: an 8-yr-old male Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) with acute paraplegia, a 10-yr-old male tiger of unknown subspecies (Panthera tigris) with progressive tetraparesis, and a 17-yr-old female African lion (Panthera leo) with mild paraparesis. Two cases were diagnosed via magneti

Spontaneous Disseminated Histiocytic Sarcoma in a Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris).

A 16-year-old, female, captive Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) had a history of a recurrent subcutaneous mass. After two attempts at surgical removal, euthanasia was elected during the third surgical attempt due to the degree of neoplastic infiltration. At necropsy, a large subcutaneous mass infiltrated the dermis, subcutis and abdominal wall with metastasis to the lungs, spleen and adrenal glands. Microscopically, the neoplasm formed nodules comprising sheets of round cells with large irregular nuclei. Toluidine blue and Giemsa stains were negative. An immunohistochemistry panel reveale

Presumed primary thiamine deficiency in a young African lion (Panthera leo).

A 1-yr-old intact male African lion (Panthera leo) fed only beef muscle meat was evaluated for episodes of hypermetric ataxia, generalized weakness and tonic-clonic front limb movements. A hemogram, biochemical profile, blood lead, electrocardiogram, survey radiographs, and brain computed tomography were normal. Cerebral spinal fluid analyses suggested mild inflammation. Acetylcholine receptor antibody and serologic tests for all infectious agents tested were negative. Clinical signs resolved completely 9 days after instituting oral thiamine (3 mg/kg/day) and a completely nutritional diet. Thi

Caudal cervical disc protrusion in a Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris).

A young adult male white Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) presented with hindlimb ataxia. Cervical and lumbar myelography revealed a compressive lesion of the cord at C(6-7). Corticosteroid therapy and confinement failed to provide lasting remission of signs. A modified, inverted cone ventral slot decompression was used to remove the fibrous material causing cord compression at C(6-7). Temporary Horner's syndrome and laryngeal paresis developed postsurgically because of excessive tissue retraction. The animal recovered normal ambulatory function 6 wk after surgery.

Veno-occlusive disease in snow leopards (Panthera uncia) from zoological parks.

Livers from 54 snow leopards, 4 days to 23 years old, that had died in 23 US zoos, were evaluated histopathologically to determine if the hepatic fibrosis, which has been noted to be prevalent in this species, was due to chronic active hepatitis from hepadnaviral infection, Ito cell proliferation, or hemosiderosis. Forty-two of 54 snow leopards had subintimal vascular fibrosis with partial or total occlusion of central and sublobular veins (veno-occlusive disease) of unknown origin. All 21 leopards older than 5 years were affected. Four leopards had chronic active hepatitis, and 12 leopards ha

Canine distemper outbreak and laryngeal paralysis in captive tigers (Panthera tigris).

The canine distemper virus (CDV) could infect various wildlife species worldwide. The viral infection in large felids directly impacts wildlife conservation. This study aimed to understand better the burden of CDV outbreaks in captive tiger populations in Thailand and a novel discovery of their clinical signs with a history of CDV exposure. We followed up on their infection from May 2016 to October 2020 with laboratory testing and veterinary medical records. The cumulative morbidity and mortality rates were relatively high. Moreover, 50% of the tigers survived at 2 years after infection. All s

Puberty and oestral cycle length in captive female jaguars Panthera onca.

Habitat loss and fragmentation have been leading jaguars to constant conflicts with humans, and as a result, jaguar populations have been declining over the last decades. Captive breeding is often a tool for species conservation, and it is not different for jaguars. However, success is far from optimal due to the lack of basic knowledge about species' reproductive biology. In the present study, we assessed gonadal hormonal profiles of natural oestral cycles and puberty and compared our data to those of other wild felids. We collected faecal samples from two to seven times per week for 18 month

Leishmania infantum infection in two captive barbary lions (Panthera leo leo).

A female barbary lion (Panthera leo leo) from the Montpellier Zoological Park (France) showing colitis, epistaxis, and lameness with pad ulcers was positive by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for Leishmania infantum. Further indirect immunofluorescence (IFAT) tests on the banked sera from all lions of the park detected another infected but asymptomatic female, which was confirmed by PCR on ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) blood sample. Leishmania infantum zymodeme MON-1 was cultured from EDTA bone marrow samples sampled from this second animal. The first female was successfully treated w

Sudden death associated with Clostridium sordellii in captive lions (Panthera leo).

In the spring of 2003, a series of sudden deaths in a group of adult lions (Panthera leo) with a previous history of depression, inanition, and lethargy, was investigated. Five animals died within 24 to 36 hours after onset of signs of disease. Serologic screening for viral disease detection was negative, evidence of parasites was not detected, and results of a complete blood count and serum biochemical analysis were within reference intervals in all lions. The most relevant lesions observed were multiple areas of necrosis and hemorrhage in the intestinal outer muscular layer, and cellulitis w

Integrated Reproductive and Cytogenetic Assessment of Infertility in a Captive Jaguar (Panthera onca).

BACKGROUND: Ex situ conservation of threatened felid species requires a thorough understanding of reproductive biology and realistic evaluation of assisted reproductive techniques (ART). In jaguars (Panthera onca), however, knowledge of reproductive limitations in captivity remains scarce. OBJECTIVES: On the basis of a comprehensive single-timepoint assessment, this study applied an integrated clinical, endocrinological, semen analysis and cytogenetic approach to investigate persistent infertility in a captive jaguar breeding pair recommended for reproduction within the European Association o

Oral eosinophilic granulomas in tigers (Panthera tigris)--a collection of 16 cases.

Oral eosinophilic granulomas were diagnosed in 16 tigers (Panthera tigris). All lesions were located on the hard or soft palate and typically consisted of flat or slightly raised circular ulcers. Histologic features of these lesions were essentially identical to those seen in oral eosinophilic granulomas of domestic cats and dogs. No clinical signs were noted in eight cases, though various degrees of inappetence, excessive salivation, and dysphagia were noted in the other eight tigers. Six cases were not treated. Treatment for the remaining 10 cases centered on corticosteroids and additional t
