2013 College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Annual Meeting: pediatric cardiology: an overview.

Congenital heart defects can be classified as those characterized by a left to right shunt, a right to left shunt, obstruction to flow from the heart, or abnormalcies of myocardial contraction and relaxation. Left to right shunts include atrial and ventricular septal defects, and patent ductus arteriosus. Right to left shunts include transposition of the great arteries, tetralogy of Fallot, tricuspid atresia among others. These defects result in cyanosis. Lesions causing obstruction to blood flow from the heart include aortic and pulmonary valve stenosis and coarctation of the aorta. Disorders

Flow cytometry for assessing pulp viability in pediatric dentistry: An exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Dental pulp (DP) in pediatric patients plays a vital role in dentin formation, nutrition, protection, and tooth repair. Pulpal pathologies are a common reason for pediatric dental visits; however, accurate clinical diagnosis can be challenging, particularly in young patients and those with limited cooperation. Currently, no reliable clinical method exists to definitively determine pulp viability, and histopathological diagnosis remains the gold standard despite its invasiveness. Flow cytometry has proven effective in cellular analysis across biomedical fields and was used in this s

A Simplified Technique for the Fabrication of Esthetic and Functional Space Maintainers in Pediatric Dentistry.

INTRODUCTION: Premature loss of primary molars remains a frequent clinical problem in pediatric dentistry and may lead to space loss, occlusal disturbances, and the need for future orthodontic intervention. Conventional space maintainers, such as the band-and-loop appliance, are effective in preserving arch length but do not restore occlusal function or esthetics. OBJECTIVES: This case report describes an easy and practical technique for fabricating esthetic-functional space maintainers without the need for silver or laser soldering during the laboratory phase, eliminates the need for orthodo…

Unveiling the Enigma of Multiple Odontomas in Pediatric Dentistry: A Rare Clinical Presentation.

Odontomas are the most common tooth-like hamartomatous odontogenic tumours, which are usually asymptomatic and found on routine radiographs. Odontomas are commonly classified into two types: complex and compound odontomas. The most common consequences of odontoma are tooth impaction and/or delayed tooth eruption. The present report describes a unique case of multiple complex odontoma in the anterior maxillary region in a 12-year-old young patient, which is a rare occurrence. The uniqueness of this case report is in the location, number, and complexity of the complex tumours. Early diagnosis, p

Current Approaches to Antibiotic Prophylaxis for Infective Endocarditis in Pediatric Dentistry: A Review.

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a serious and potentially life-threatening bacterial infection of the cardiac epithelium, with a mortality rate of approximately 5% in children. The most common risk factor for IE in this population is congenital heart disease. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry acknowledges that certain medical conditions increase susceptibility to infections resulting from bacteremia. Antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended for high-risk patients prior to procedures that could induce bacteremia, with the goal of reducing or preventing transient bacteremia caused by invas…
