New directions for the Journal of Health Psychology.

This editorial reflects on the current and future directions of the Journal of Health Psychology. As the Co-Editors in Chief, we briefly outline our positionality and the importance of our Editorial Board and other peer reviewers in ensuring the rigour of accepted articles. We comment on the middle-ground that has to be struck when considering the scope of open science given that data sharing has to be tempered by ethical and methodological considerations. We re-visit the aims and scope of the journal and reflect on some of the key aspects of diversity that set the journal apart from others. W

The rise of predatory publishing and journals.

Predatory publishing is a practice where businesses offer illegitimate and unethical publishing where an open access model is generally used with very little or no peer review at all. These publishers also charge high fees for article processing without the standard editorial or publishing standards for scientific disciplines. Predatory journals are an increasing phenomenon in dentistry, as in any healthcare academic publishing. This can mean poor-quality or false research is given false legitimacy and becomes available for dissemination and public consumption. They can be seen as an easy rout

Comparison of Clinical Study Results Reported in medRxiv Preprints vs Peer-reviewed Journal Articles.

IMPORTANCE: Preprints have been widely adopted to enhance the timely dissemination of research across many scientific fields. Concerns remain that early, public access to preliminary medical research has the potential to propagate misleading or faulty research that has been conducted or interpreted in error. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the concordance among study characteristics, results, and interpretations described in preprints of clinical studies posted to medRxiv that are subsequently published in peer-reviewed journals (preprint-journal article pairs). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Thi

Artificial intelligence as author: Can scientific reviewers recognize GPT-4o-generated manuscripts?

INTRODUCTION: Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT) is a natural language processing model. It can be argued that ChatGPT has recently begun to assume the role of a technological assistant capable of supporting academics in the process of scientific writing. ChatGPT may contribute to the spread of incorrect or incomplete information within academic literature, leading to conceptual confusion and potential academic misconduct. The aim of this study is to determine whether a scientific article entirely generated by an AI application such as ChatGPT can be detected by an academic jour

Using an open science checklist in grant proposal reviews to predict reproducibility of funded publications.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether an open science checklist can be useful for predicting the reproducibility of publications resulting from these grant proposals when used by grant referees assessing them. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: This is a comparative accuracy study design using funded grant proposals obtained from online sources (i.e., Open Grants, RIO Journal, NIH, and Grantome). Two independent groups of mock referees assessed open science practices in the proposals and predicted whether the resulting publications would be reproducible, with one group using an open science checklist as an

Tobacco prevention and control interventions in humanitarian settings: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco has been a complex global problem that has adversely affected almost all the sectors of society. However, the ill-effects are often most reflected in humanitarian settings, which inadvertently are surmounted by fragile systems. We aim to map tobacco prevention and control intervention in humanitarian settings. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This scoping review will follow the guidelines of the Joanna Briggs Institute. A comprehensive search strategy was designed using Medical Subject Heading terms, subject experts and pertinent reviews. The search was conducted on Medline (throug

Understanding discrimination towards persons experiencing homelessness: A scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Given the increasing rates of homelessness in recent years, there is an urgent need to address the ongoing discrimination and societal disinterest in preventing, reducing and ending homelessness. There is no systematic review of experiences of stigma and discrimination among persons experiencing homelessness or interventions to combat this discrimination. The objective for the proposed study is to identify ways in which persons experiencing homelessness have been stigmatised and discriminated against, the results of these experiences, and interventions to reduce stigma and discri

Role of brain tissue oxygenation (PbtO2) in the management of subarachnoid haemorrhage: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: In patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH), the initial brain oedema and increased blood volume can cause an increase in intracranial pressure (ICP) leading to impaired cerebral perfusion and tissue hypoxia. However, ICP monitoring may not be enough to detect tissue hypoxia, which can also occur in the absence of elevated ICP. Moreover, some patients will experience tissue hypoxia in a later phase after admission due to the occurrence of delayed cerebral ischaemia. Therefore, the measurement of brain oxygenation using invasive techniques has become of great interest. This sc

Development and use of mobile messaging for individuals with musculoskeletal pain conditions: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Previous reviews of mobile messaging for individuals with musculoskeletal pain have shown positive effects on pain and disability. However, the configuration of digital content, method of presentation and interaction, dose and frequency needed for optimal results remain unclear. Patient preferences concerning such systems are also unclear. Addressing these knowledge gaps, incorporating evidence from both experimental and observational studies, may be useful to understand the extent of the relevant literature, and to influence the design and outcomes of future messaging systems. What the American Journal of Critical Care Junior Peer Reviewers Were Reading During Year 2 of the Program.

The American Journal of Critical Care's Junior Peer Reviewer program aims to mentor novice reviewers in the peer review process. To grow their critical appraisal skills, the participants take part in discussion sessions in which they review articles published in other journals. Here we summarize the articles reviewed during the second year of the program, which again focused on the care of critically ill patients with COVID-19. This article aims to share these reviews and the reviewers' thoughts regarding the relevance, design, and applicability of the findings from the selected studies. High

Relating patenting and peer-review publications: an extended perspective on the vascular health and risk management literature.

PURPOSE: This investigation identifies patent applications published under the international Patent Convention Treaty between July 2010 and January 2011 in three significant fields of vascular risk management (arterial hypertension, atherosclerosis, and aneurysms) and investigates whether the inventors have also published peer reviewed papers directly describing their claimed invention. RESULTS: Out of only 48 patent documents that specifically addressed at least one of the above-mentioned fields, 15 had immediate companion papers of which 13 were published earlier than the corresponding pate

Application of systematic reviews in speech-and-language therapy.

BACKGROUND: Systematic reviews are increasingly being carried out in speech-and-language therapy and are used by practitioners, service commissioners, policy-makers and researchers to inform decision-making, as the body of evidence available about speech-and-language therapy grows. Although systematic reviewing is developing to incorporate new methods of review and synthesis, there are currently limitations in the use of some types of systematic reviews within speech-and-language therapy. AIMS: The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the steps involved in the systematic review

Understanding recovery experiences and occupational support needs among substance use peer workers: a qualitative systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The USA is facing a substance use workforce crisis, due in part to a shortage of providers. Substance use peer workers (PWs) fill a critical gap in the care continuum and are a growing sector of the workforce. In their daily work of providing non-clinical services to highly vulnerable people who use drugs, PWs are repeatedly exposed to stress, trauma and loss, which can adversely affect their well-being and recovery. This review aims to synthesise available evidence on PWs' experiences working in the field, its impact on their recovery and their occupational support needs. METHO

Academic nightmares: Predatory publishing.

Academic researchers who seek to publish their work are confronted daily with a barrage of e-mails from aggressive marketing campaigns that solicit them to publish their research with a specialized, often newly launched, journal. Known as predatory journals, they often promise high editorial and publishing standards, yet their exploitive business models, poor quality control, and minimal overall transparency victimize those researchers with limited academic experience and pave the way for low-quality articles that threaten the foundation of evidence-based research. Understanding how to identif

Strategies for treating acute pain in patients with opioid dependence: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: People who are dependent on opioids experience acute pain similar to other individuals. However, treating acute pain in these patients renders unique challenges such as opioid-induced hyperalgesia, opioid tolerance, withdrawal and stigma from healthcare providers. Thus, it is crucial to identify effective strategies for treating acute pain in this population and to highlight gaps in knowledge to create a high standard of care. The main objective of the proposed scoping review is to identify current strategies for treating the acute pain in individuals with opioid dependence or us
