UNLABELLED: The incidence of post-infectious autoimmune diseases has been on the rise following the COVID-19 pandemic. Recently, an autistic patient was admitted to the hospital presenting with a mild upper respiratory system COVID-19 infection. Months after recovery and polymerase chain reaction negativity, the patient developed HEp-2 cell positivity and presented with relapsing polychondritis (RP), a rare autoimmune disease. The mechanism of this autoimmune invasion is ultimately caused by activating a myriad of immune reactions. Lymphocytopenia almost always accompanies various clinical for

Increasing evidence shows that infections and an activated immune status might be involved in the pathogene-sis of tic disorders. Studies discuss the influence of neurotrophic bacteria and viruses on different psychiatric disorders. In addition, signs of inflammation and immunological abnormalities have been described especially in schizophrenia and Tourette's syndrome (tic disorder). Neuroimaging studies revealed increased microglial activation in psychiatric diseases; indicating an inflammatory state of the CNS.However, it still remains unclear what the underlying mechanism is of how infecti

Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) are genetic disorders that impair the development and/or function of the immune system. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) represents a key and potentially curative treatment option for selected patients with IEI. Nevertheless, HSCT is a complex procedure associated with clinical and immunological complications that may arise at different stages during post-transplant follow-up. This article summarizes the consensus recommendations developed by the Pediatric Immunology Work Group of the Sociedad Argentina de Pediatría, in collaboration with transplan

Since the description of the association between neuromyelitis optica (Devic's disease) and aquaporin 4 IgG antibody (NMO-IgG), the search for this antibody has been considered a highly recommended laboratory test when centromedullary multisegmental lesions are observed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Such MRI lesions have not been confined to acute NMO myelitis because other infectious and post-infectious disorders may display a similar lesional pattern. However, NMO-IgG has not been currently searched and associated with these myelitides. The objective of this study is to report an infe…

Around 10% of adults infected with SARS-CoV-2 that survive a first episode of COVID-19 appear to experience long-term clinical manifestations. The signs and symptoms of this post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (PACS) include fatigue, dyspnea, joint pain, myalgia, chest pain, cough, anosmia, dysgeusia, headache, depression, anxiety, memory loss, concentration difficulties, and insomnia. These sequelae remind the constellation of clinical manifestations previously recognized as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). This condition has been described following distinct infecti

The symptoms of Klüver-Bucy syndrome (KBS) include hyperorality, hypersexuality, visual agnosia, hypermetamorphosis and decreased motor or vocal reaction to fear- or anger-provoking stimuli. This syndrome has been associated with a wide variety of neurodegenerative disorders, as well as traumatic, non-traumatic and infectious brain injuries. We report an 11-year-old boy who developed a fairly classical presentation of KBS, presumably in the setting of post-infectious acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM). This patient's presentation is a reminder of this rare syndrome and extends the cli

Movement disorders are extremely rare in acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) and in the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) infection. We herein report a 34-years-old previously healthy woman who presented with a febrile illness and a constellation of movement disorders (predominantly myoclonus) followed by encephalopathy. After exclusion of common infectious, autoimmune and paraneoplastic etiologies, she was diagnosed to have COVID-19 induced ADEM, which responded to intravenous methylprednisolone and intravenous immunoglobulin. Our case adds to the tally

INTRODUCTION: Herpes zoster (HZ) has been reported as a potential post-viral complication in individuals recovering from COVID-19, possibly due to virus-induced immune dysregulation. We aimed to investigate whether post-COVID HZ is associated with an elevated risk of hematologic or infectious complications.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX global research network, which aggregates de-identified electronic health records from more than 140 healthcare institutions. Adults diagnosed with COVID-19 between January 2020 and January 2022 were stratified by the pre

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) comprises a group of demyelinating disorders of the CNS, of which a haemorrhagic variant indicates the most severe clinical course (AHEM). It is supposed to be caused by an overshooting immunological response following an infection or a vaccination. Restricted diffusion of protons could be demonstrated using DW-MRI in a case of rapidly progressive disease with additional haemorrhage. Hence, the addition of DWI adds to the diagnostic power of MRI in the setting of post-infectious demyelinating disorders of the CNS.

From drug use in the hospital to patient-directed discharges and threatening behavior, challenging behaviors arise frequently in inpatients with infectious complications of substance use disorders (SUDs). The management of such challenging behaviors can bring key ethical values into tension and be susceptible to clinician bias. Here, we characterize the ethical tensions that emerge in the management of challenging behaviors in inpatients with infectious complications of SUD, identify preventive approaches, and delineate how clinicians can respond when preventive measures fail. Such preventive

PURPOSE: To describe a self-limited presentation of pediatric orbital myositis and discuss its implications for management.
OBSERVATIONS: A previously healthy 9-year-old boy presented with acute painful diplopia and esotropia following a recent febrile upper respiratory tract infection and presumed viral conjunctivitis. Best-corrected visual acuity was 20/40 OD and 20/40 OS. Examination demonstrated an esotropia of 30 prism diopters (PD) at corrected distance and 35 PD at corrected near, bilateral abduction limitation (- 1), and localized temporal conjunctival injection over the lateral rectu

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: There is a high prevalence of olfactory dysfunction in the general population. Several causes of olfactory dysfunction have been reported and this disorder is classically divided into sinonasal and non-sinonasal-related olfactory dysfunction. The aims of this study were firstly, to evaluate the frequency of the various aetiologies of olfactory dysfunction in a population of patients with non-sinonasal-related olfactory dysfunction and secondly, to evaluate the degree of olfactory impairment associated with these various aetiologies.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospective

The clinical course of a five-year-old boy who developed meningeal irritation, encephalomyelitis, and optic neuritis four weeks after Streptococcus pyogenes pharyngitis is detailed. The patient responded to therapy with corticosteroids and recovered fully. Review of the literature reveals that a wide range of neurological disorders have been described in association with rheumatic fever. We suggest that disseminated encephalomyelitis in this child most probably was related to the streptococcal infection and that the spectrum of post-infectious neurological disorders associated with Streptococc

Acute SARS-CoV-2 infection triggers the de novo production of diverse, functional autoantibodies (AABs) that remain elevated in long COVID (LC), but their pathogenic role remains unclear. Using tissue-based immunofluorescence, ELISA, human protein array, and mass spectrometry assays, we identified a broad range of AAB targets among individuals with LC. Individuals with neurocognitive symptoms showed increased AABs against central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system proteins. Purified immunoglobulin G (IgG) reacted with human locus coeruleus, thalamus, adrenal gland, and thyroid

Sepsis continues to be a major cause of morbidity, mortality, and post-recovery disability in patients with a wide range of non-infectious and infectious inflammatory disorders, including COVID-19. The clinical onset of sepsis is often marked by the explosive release into the extracellular fluids of a multiplicity of host-derived cytokines and other pro-inflammatory hormone-like messengers from endogenous sources ("cytokine storm"). In patients with sepsis, therapies to counter the pro-inflammatory torrent, even when administered early, typically fall short. The major focus of our proposed ess

Early diagnosis of post-operative infectious complications was established based on semiotic evaluation, SAPS-based analysis of severity of the disease, and results of ultrasound studies. SAPS analysis of functional disorders proved a reliable tool for diagnosis of peritonitis but less accurate for diagnosis of intra-abdominal abscess. Ultrasound revealed meaningful symptoms of infectious complications, such as the presence of free and confined fluids in the abdominal cavity, increased small intestine diameter, disturbed peristalsis. High diagnostic efficiency of laparoscopy permits it to be u
