Background and aims: There is evidence to suggest that biogenetic explanations for symptoms of mental disorders have become increasingly popular. Research suggests that such explanations provokes mixed blessings: biological explanations may reduce blame but also encourage prognostic pessimism and promote perceptions of pharmacological treatment over psychotherapy. The goal of this study was to evaluate the impact of different causal explanations on social anxiety disorder.Method: About 205 adults completed an experiment where they read a vignette describing an individual with social anxiety di

People with HIV (PWH) in rural China continue to experience multiple forms of stigma that threaten their overall wellbeing. This study explored how internalized stigma and mental health distress mediate the relationship between social stigma and physical health using baseline data from 800 PWH (42% women; mean age 54.8 years) from the Rise-Up Project in Guangxi, China. Social stigma was modeled as a latent construct composed of perceived and anticipated stigma, while mental health distress was represented by depressive, anxiety symptoms and perceived stress. Physical health included general he

People with concealable stigmatized identities, such as a criminal record, often anticipate stigma from others. Anticipated stigma is thought to cause withdrawal from situations in which there is the potential for discrimination, which then negatively impacts behavior and functioning. This may have implications for offenders reentering the community, possibly hindering community integration and encouraging maladaptive behavior postrelease. Drawing upon a sample of 197 male jail inmates, we examine a theoretical model in which anticipated stigma during incarceration predicts behavioral outcomes

BACKGROUND: HIV/AIDS remains a highly stigmatizing disease worldwide, preventing people with risk or infection from testing to learn their HIV status, accessing supportive services, or taking antiretroviral therapy. Despite many studies of HIV in blood donors, no studies have evaluated the factors that contribute to stigma surrounding this illness following notification process and counseling provided by blood centers.
METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey was conducted between 2016 and 2017. Persons with HIV were invited to return to the blood center for an audio computer-ass

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a neurogenetic disorder associated with visual-spatial problems, executive dysfunction, and language deficits, making patients experience social isolation, stigma, anxiety, and depression. Here, we explored NF1 patients' lived experiences by conducting semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 21 NF1 patients and 16 care providers. The thematic analysis uncovered dimensions of NF1 patients' social lives at different ecological levels, including their relationships with family, friends, teachers, coworkers, providers, and society. Positive dimensions of NF1 pat

BACKGROUND: Living with spina bifida in Palestine is a critical issue that might influence various aspects of the individual's life. It is a challenge for children, their families, and health care providers because it requires lifelong treatment and follow-up of care provision. However, little focus has been placed on these children's perceptions about their daily life experiences with spina bifida.
PURPOSE: To illuminate the lived experience of children with spina bifida in the West Bank, Palestine.
METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted using the phenomenological hermeneutical method t

Research on men's mental health points out gender differences in help-seeking and access to care. Traditional masculine norms (i.e., emotional repression, self-reliance, "being strong") and gender bias might conceal distress, delay treatment, and help to explain higher burdens of addiction, violence, and suicide alongside lower recorded affective/anxiety diagnoses. An exploratory narrative review was conducted. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched for 2015-2025 studies using MeSH and terms on men's mental health, masculinities, and stigma. Eleven studies identified attitudinal barr

People living with HIV (PWH), more than half of whom are age 50 years and older, experience a high prevalence of multiple chronic conditions (MCC) and fragile social networks. Although social engagement can be protective against detrimental physical, cognitive, and mental health outcomes, there is limited evidence about older PWH's social engagement and associated factors in engaging with family, friends and the community. This study examined the state of social engagement in a population of older PWH, using the 13-item Frequency of Leisure Activities Scale from the Research on Older Adults wi

Patients with epilepsy (PWE) might feel stigmatized due to the likelihood of having uncontrollable seizures and the possibility of their sudden occurrence in the community, which may lead to increased rates of social phobia in these patients. People with social phobia interpret others' attitudes toward them negatively and hence feel stigmatized. This vicious circle may be applied to PWE, reduces the quality of life and might cause them more challenging psychosocial problems than seizure management. We aimed to investigate the relationship between social phobia and stigmatization in PWE. Forty

People living with mental illnesses and their families may conceal their conditions to avoid prejudice and discrimination. Stigma often prevents people from receiving adequate health care and other social support services which could exacerbate social and health consequences such as unemployment, homelessness, substance use, and compulsory hospitalization. In this paper, we discuss social contact as a promising anti-stigma strategy for enhancing social interactions among people with mental illnesses, their families, and those without mental illnesses. In particularly, we consider next steps fo

Background: Transgender populations, and especially those in resource-limited settings, are at an elevated risk of experiencing stigma and discrimination. Aims: This study sought to examine the relationship between parental, familial, and other social support, experiences of stigma and discrimination, quality of life, and sex work in a national sample of transgender women in the Dominican Republic (n = 291). Methods: Descriptive analyses for the outcome variable, sex work, as well as for measures associated with socio-demographics, social support, stigma, quality of life, and experiences of ab

INTRODUCTION: Disease-related stigma and knowledge are believed to be associated with patients' willingness to seek treatment and adherence to treatment. HIV-associated tuberculosis (TB) presents unique challenges, because TB and HIV are both medically complex and stigmatizing diseases. In Thailand, we assessed knowledge and beliefs about these diseases among HIV-infected TB patients.
METHODS: We prospectively interviewed and examined HIV-infected TB patients from three provinces and one national referral hospital in Thailand from 2005-2006. At the beginning of TB treatment, we asked patients

OBJECTIVES: The authors aim to show the possibility of stigma that hits affected Mpox patients because of the statements of society involving their sexual sphere.
INTRODUCTION: 23 July 2022, the Director-General of the WHO, Thedos Ghebreyesus, issued an international public health alert regarding cases of Mpox (formerly known as Monkeypox). Although Mpox has been present in an endemic form for years in some Central African countries, the spread of the disease outside Africa has aroused considerable alarm in populations already sorely afflicted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Aside from the data, wh

This study extends scholarship on stigma management communication and social support by exploring the experiences of fathers of children living with a rare health condition, Sturge-Weber Syndrome. Findings from this interview-based interpretive study reveal that fathers assuaged the negative effects of stigma on their children-and courtesy stigma on themselves-by employing buffering strategies, including reactive and preemptive information sharing, preparatory conversations, and support blocking. Further, fathers offered three rationalizations for their blocking behaviors-reasoning that to acc

Research indicates that adolescents who experience mental health difficulties are frequently stigmatised by their peers. Stigmatisation is associated with a host of negative social and psychological effects, which impacts a young person's well-being. As a result, the development of effective anti-stigma strategies is considered a major research priority. However, in order to design effective stigma reduction strategies, researchers must be informed by an understanding of the factors that influence the expression of stigma. Although evidence suggests that empathy and social norms have a conside

This study investigates the pathways to perceived HIV-related stigma among people living with HIV (PLWH) in China, focusing on the roles of social support, coping styles, psychosocial symptoms, and caregiver stigma. Utilizing a cross-sectional survey of 3,040 participants and 425 caregivers recruited from healthcare settings across Shanghai, Beijing, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Yunnan, we employed Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to examine the complex interrelationships among these factors. Our results indicate that higher levels of social support and positive coping styles are associated with

There is a strong relationship between autism and mental health problems. Autistic individuals are more frequently exposed to stigma and social exclusion in social life, which may lead them to engage in socially desirable behaviors to camouflage themselves. Within this framework, the present study aimed to examine the relationship between autism traits and mental well-being, focusing on social camouflaging behaviors in the context of social exclusion and perceived stigma. The study sample consisted of 548 adults across Turkey, including 432 women (78.8%) and 116 men (21.2%). To test the propos

Although the association between objective markers of low socioeconomic status (SES) and poor health is well established, one underexamined possibility is that over and above objective SES, social class stigma-experiences and anticipation of discrimination based on social class-might undermine people's ability to engage in healthy behaviors. Participants (N = 2022) were recruited between December 2019 and January 2020 via a national Qualtrics panel that was census-matched to the U.S. population in age, gender, income, race/ethnicity, and census region. Participants completed measures of class
