In this article, we critically review the evidence for overlap among three developmental disorders, namely speech sound disorder (SSD), language impairment (LI), and reading disability (RD), at three levels of analysis: diagnostic, cognitive, and etiological. We find that while overlap exists at all three levels, it varies by comorbidity subtype, and the relations among these three disorders are complex and not fully understood. We evaluate which comorbidity models can be rejected or supported as explanations for why and how these three disorders overlap and what new data are needed to better

Rett syndrome (RS) is a severe genetically conditioned disorder of an early childhood with an definite clinical phenotype in girls. Motor and speech disturbances are noted as the essential part of RS clinical picture. The variability of motor dysfunction and degree of speech deterioration were noted at different stages of the illness. The aim of the present investigation was to study dynamics of both speech and motor disturbances during 2-5 years of the course of the illness and to analyze a correlation of motor and speech functions' disorders. The study was performed in 50 girls with classica

The health care of children with speech disorders, ranging from diagnosis to handling by local health centers, was reported based on our experience in Fukui Prefecture. With regard to diagnosis, it was stressed that both medical diagnostic and developmental diagnostic viewpoints are necessary. With respect to practical aspects of health care, the role of physicians in a treatment team and the formation of a team in response to the specific type of disorder was discussed. In addition, various problems and their handling within the context of the social environment surrounding the care of childr…

Electromyography (EMG) feedback techniques used in physical and occupational therapies were applied successfully in the treatment of three patients with speech/language disorders. The Hyperion Bioconditioner, Model 4080, a microprocessor-based EMG that provides on-line, real-time computation, was used to record and display EMGs from two muscle groups. Results of three case studies reconfirm the effectiveness of biofeedback for all types of neuromuscular reeducation.

BACKGROUND: Motor speech disorders are early, common, and functionally limiting features of atypical parkinsonian disorders (APDs) such as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), corticobasal syndrome (CBS), and multiple system atrophy (MSA). These impairments are underrecognized and undertreated in neurology clinics.
OBJECTIVES: This review aims to characterize speech impairment in APDs, offer practical guidance for clinical evaluation, highlight the role of Speech-Language pathologists (SLPs) in diagnosis and management, and outline current and emerging management strategies.
METHODS: A narr…

Speech disorders still remains one of the cornerstones of pediatric neurology. Against the backdrop of gene diagnostic development, there are a huge amount of information about the role of genetic and chromosomal abnormalities in pathogenesis of speech disorders. In present article authors presenting an actual data on genetic basis of different types of speech disorders. Moreover, authors describing a clinical case of a patient with genetically determined developmental disorder, caused by KMT5B mutation validated by Sanger method.

The speech we hear every day is typically "degraded" by competing sounds and the idiosyncratic vocal characteristics of individual speakers. While the comprehension of "degraded" speech is normally automatic, it depends on dynamic and adaptive processing across distributed neural networks. This presents the brain with an immense computational challenge, making degraded speech processing vulnerable to a range of brain disorders. Therefore, it is likely to be a sensitive marker of neural circuit dysfunction and an index of retained neural plasticity. Considering experimental methods for studying

AIM: To study the efficacy of neyroferon in developmental speech disorders (SDD).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty preschool children were stratified into 3 groups: 4-5 years (n=8), 5-6 years (n=10) and 6-7 years (n=12). The children were treated with neyroferon in dose 1 tablet three times a day during 2 month. A multifaceted study of speech disorders using several methods was conducted. General mental state, emotional and behavioral characteristics of the children were assessed as well.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: A therapeutic effect of neyroferon (the improvement of auditory-speech memory, expre…

The aim of the study was to discuss physiology and pathology of speech and review of the literature on speech disorders in Parkinson disease. Additionally, the most effective methods to diagnose the speech disorders in Parkinson disease were also stressed. Afterward, articulatory, respiratory, acoustic and pragmatic factors contributing to the exacerbation of the speech disorders were discussed. Furthermore, the study dealt with the most important types of speech treatment techniques available (pharmacological and behavioral) and a significance of Lee Silverman Voice Treatment was highlighted.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to evaluate the influence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) on speech in children, and to verify t … igns or symptoms (Group S or S, n=33), and without signs and symptoms (Group N, n=11). Articulatory speech disorders were diagnosed during spontaneous speech and repetition of the words using the "Phonological Assessment of Child Speech" for the Portuguese language. It was also applied a list of 40 phonological balanced words, read by the speech pathologist and re …

The primary objective of this position paper is to assess the theoretical and empirical support that exists for the Mayo Clinic view of motor speech disorders in general, and for oromotor, nonverbal tasks as a window to speech production processes in particular. Literature both in support of and against the Mayo clinic view and the associated use of oromotor, nonverbal tasks, is reviewed, along with literature from normal speech production and neurophysiology. This literature is organized and analysed to show that theoretical and experimental support for the Mayo view is weak at best, and that…

Despite their frequency and clinical relevance, disturbances in the acquirement of language skills are not infrequently overlooked or are recognized too late, in particular when the problem is speech understanding, or when behavioral disturbances predominate. Diagnostic guidelines differentiate between circumscribed articulation disorders and expressive and receptive speech problems. The diagnostic work-up must take account of the changes in symptoms occurring during the course of the child's development. Mental comorbidity may be observed in every second speech-disordered child. Complex segregation analysis was performed on pedigrees ascertained through 45 probands (26 males, 19 females) with a history of preschool speech and language disorders. Hypotheses concerning mode of inheritance were tested using the POINTER segregation analysis program. Although there is strong evidence for familial transmission of this trait, we were unable to distinguish between a major gene and multifactorial transmission model using likelihood-ratio chi-square tests. Future studies with quantitative measures of speech and language disorders are needed to resolve the issue of mode of inher
