[Home treatment of dental hyperesthesia symptoms].

THE AIM OF THE STUDY: Was to assess the efficacy of Sensodyne toothpast for the improvement of dental hypersensitivity of various origin and the duration of the achieved effect. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined 142 patients of which 95 people had tooth sensitivity. Of these, 4 groups were formed homogeneous by age and sex. Group 1 comprised 27 people (average age 34±3 years) with I grade dental abrasion. Group 2 comprised 23 people (average age 33±5 years) with II grade dental abrasion. Group 3 consisted of 23 people (average age 37±4 years) with grade 3 abrasion with gingival recession of

Surface roughening of human enamel after toothbrushing.

Grooves and scratches on the enamel surface are potential and preferential sites for bacterial adhesion. During toothbrushing groove formation is a potential risk especially in dentin. To obtain information on groove formation in enamel a profilometric experiment has been carried out on polished human enamel. The main result is that no groove formation with a depth more than a few tenths of a micrometer is observable even after 50.000 toothbrush strokes. The fact that material is removed by toothbrushing is indirect proof that enamel is removed by continuous brushing in layers more or less par

Can tooth brushing damage your health? Effects on oral and dental tissues.

Circumstantial evidence based on anecdote, case reports, epidemiological data and studies in vitro and in situ implicate tooth brushing with toothpaste with tooth wear, gingival recession and dentine hypersensitivity. This review attempts to assess the clinical significance of the potential harm produced by this most common oral hygiene habit. The toothbrush alone appears to have no effect on enamel and very little on dentine. Most toothpaste also has very little effect on enamel and in normal use would not cause significant wear of dentine in a lifetime of use. Wear of enamel and dentine can

Effect of Silica-Based Abrasive Ingredients on Fluoride Concentration in Toothpaste: An In Vitro and In Vivo Study.

Background/Objectives: Toothpastes have recently been developed with purposes ranging from strengthening teeth and restoring periodontal tissue to removing stains and alleviating tooth sensitivity. Although the individual effects of each component are well understood, their interactions with each other remain unclear. Methods: The oral fluoride concentration following the use of dentifrices with different abrasive contents was evaluated in seven healthy adults. In addition, in in vitro apatite pellet experiments, fluoride concentration from the pellets was compared after the use of dentifrices

Bruxism and its effect on the natural teeth.

Bruxism is one of the most prevalent, complex, and destructive dental functional disorders. It is difficult to identify, especially in its early stages, because most patients are unaware of the habit. Although many factors contribute to the etiology of the disorder, there is little valid and reliable clinical research to assure a correct diagnosis. The effects of bruxism are multiple and diverse and include temporomandibular joint pain and dysfunction, head and neck pain, tooth wear, mobility, erosion, abrasion, loss of and damage to supporting structures, muscle pain and spasm, disturbance of

Influence of the relative enamel abrasivity of toothpastes (REA value) on the wear of eroded enamel.

Eroded enamel is more susceptible to abrasion than healthy one. The present study aims to determine the impact of toothpaste abrasiveness (REA-value) and brushing force on enamel wear after erosion. 140 enamel samples from bovine teeth were divided into seven groups (N = 20). Each group was assigned a different toothpaste with varying levels of abrasiveness (groups 1+2: Candida Parodin (REA 2), groups 3+4: Candida Multicare (REA 9), and groups 5+6: Candida White Micro Crystals (REA 19)). The samples were first exposed to a citric acid solution (pH 2.60; 2 min) to simulate an erosive attack and

The global prevalence of tooth wear in general population: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Tooth wear (TW), as a common dental challenge, refers to the loss of dental tissue with four types of Attrition, Erosion, Abrasion, and Abfraction. Since there are no scientific reports regarding the global TW prevalence, this study was designed to investigate the prevalence of TW worldwide. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: Systematic search was conducted (by November 2024) in valid databases of PubMed, WoS, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar search engine using the main keywords of "Prevalence", "Tooth wear", "Erosion", "Attrition", "Abfr

In vitro and in vivo evaluation of diamond-coated strips.

OBJECTIVE: To test in vitro and in vivo the wear performance of diamond-coated strips by means of tribological testing and scanning electronic microscope (SEM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: To evaluate the in vitro wear performance, a tribological test was performed by a standard tribometer. The abrasive strips slid against stationary, freshly extracted premolars fixed in resin blocks, at a 2-newton load. At the end of the tribological test, the residual surface of the strip was observed by means of SEM analysis, which was performed every 50 meters until reaching 300 meters. For the in vivo analysi

Facial asymmetry and unstable occlusion due to poliomyelitis. Report of a case.

A case, referred to the Department of Stomatognathic Physiology, Göteborg, with an unstable occlusion is presented. There was a facial asymmetry and the bony morphology differed markedly between the sides. No EMG activity in the masticatory muscles could be detected on the left side. It was diagnosed as a probable sequela to poliomyelitis in the childhood. The impact of altered muscle function on the bony structures and dentition is discussed.

Effect of different dilution levels of toothpastes on the abrasive wear on enamel and dentin in in-vitro studies.

In-vitro studies commonly simulate toothbrushing using toothpaste slurries of defined dilution levels. However, a recent in-vivo study indicated dilution levels in patients likely to be higher than those typically used. Therefore, this in-vitro study investigated the effects of toothpastes with different relative abrasivity and different dilution on the abrasive wear of enamel and dentin. 144 bovine enamel and dentin samples were randomly assigned to 12 groups each (n = 12). Samples were brushed according to a standardized protocol with three toothpastes of different relative abrasivity on ena

[Caries preventive effect of toothpastes with detonation nanodiamonds on the dental enamel of rats].

The aim of the study was to evaluate the abrasive effect of toothpaste with nanodiamonds of detonation synthesis of different concentrations on tooth enamel of experimental animals (rats). The analysis of microphotographs obtained by scanning electron microscopy from all studied groups showed different abrasive and polishing effects of nanodiamonds in all observed anatomical zones on the vestibular surface of rat tooth enamel. At all concentrations of pastes containing nanodiamonds, tightly attached nanodiamonds were observed on the vestibular surface of the enamel of the teeth under study, th

Introspection of the Etiopathological Mechanisms Underlying Noncarious Cervical Lesions: Analysis of the Different Theories and Their Impact on the Mineralized Structures of the Tooth.

The noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) recognize an etiological framework of onset very different from the carious processes with etiology whose bacteria aggregated in a biofilm play a predominant role, leading in this way to the loss of the mineralized structure of the tooth. The pathological picture of the NCCLs, which manifests itself with a clinical picture of dental wear, differs from caries because it mainly recognizes a series of pathological processes, such as erosion, through the action of generally acidic chemical agents and abrasion, which is basically expressed through repeated me

Dental paleopathology in a Serbian Medieval population.

Analysis of the pattern of dental disease in two Late Medieval populations from cemeteries excavated at archaeological sites in western Serbia was based on the study of tooth wear, ante-mortem tooth loss, caries, dental enamel hypoplasia, alveolar resorption, abscesses and calculus. The findings reported here show a high prevalence of attrition, alveolar resorption and caries, which suggest an abrasive diet and poor oral hygiene.
